That is the question atm, once he plays one position for a decent amount of time, we should get a much better idea of what influence he can have on the team or not. I hope he can, but too early to determine anything without speculating wildly.

I hope so. I'll be honest from what i had seen of the 2, personally i would have rated Rodwell much higher than Jones. He seemed to just have much more capacity to his game.

Rodwell has suffered more with injury than Jones, but lookin at how Jones kicked on when he got here, i would be very hopeful of Rodwell doing the same. If he can, he will be an absolute beast of a CM imo, possibly an English Yaya Toure, although maybe not quite as technically gifted.

I hope he steps it up IF he does come to us, havent been impressed in the few occasions that i'v seen him play. versatile player no doubt but i'd rather we signed a specialist at CM. Fucking good at what he does rather than being decently good at multiple roles. That said, at his age, he does have a lot of potential to grow as a player. Injury prone though which is always a concern.

I think he would be perfect for Fergie to mould, dunno why interest has dropped!

20m (plus a player) for Rodwell... seriously? How many holding midfielders does 'Arry need?

Assuming there's any truth in that rumor.

I'll be honest, I don't really get the hype with him. Good player for sure but think he's been overhyped to high heaven.

The fee for Gibson was so low because he had 6 months left on his contract and was available on a free in the summer.

I actually think he's one of those youngsters that attracts so much hype at a young age that when they have the sort of dodgy spell that affects most young players at some point, people gleefully tear into them to an extent where they end up being massively under-rated. Not unlike your own Gareth Bale. The same thing happened to Jonny Evans at United.

I've a sneaking suspicion the same thing is happening with Carroll and Henderson at Liverpool but fuck it, I'm enjoying their hubris while it lasts.

A young player with plenty of potential and good PL experience already and he's versatile so would suit us playing either 4-4-2 or 4-5-1. I've not seen enough of him to comment on whether he'd be a great signing for us and his injury problems may be a bit of a concern but it's the type of player SAF likes to sign.

I don't think there's been much gleeful tearing into Jack Rodwell, not that I've noticed anyway. More a case of forgetting he exists.

If he does fail to live up to his potential as a footballer, he's got a cracking pornstar name. Though making it there will require some of the same qualities of character and fitness...as well as having an enormous penis.

The jury's out at the moment on all these questions

Nah. Carroll is just limited.

I've said before that Henderson could turn out to be a good player in a couple of years time and under good management. Only 20 years old.

Nope. Everytime I see him play, the game seems to bypass him. He doesn't seem to want the ball. As ferge once said about cleverley that he's the typical united type of player who always wants the ball. Rodwell does not do that.

I'll quote what I put in the Gibson thread a while ago:

His game as yet in centre midfield is under developed, his position is still lacking and he doesn't seem to have the game intelligence of someone like a Cleverly, possibly this is due to the fact that up until the age of 15/16 he was almost exclusively used as a central defender, so still has a lot to learn in the position which perhaps aside from goalkeeper is most reliant on experience.

Technically however he is extremely sound, well sound enough as a youngster to stand out at every level he has played for England below the senior set up. He is one of the most naturally ambidextrous footballers I have ever seen, and from the perspective of a centre midfielder this skill coupled with his technique gives him so many more passing options, angles and an ability to time a pass that I have rarely seen from someone so young, when he couples these abilities with better game intelligence I see no reason why he will not be able to dictate the tempo of games in a Carrick like manner at the very highest level.

Rodwell is a player who has been a regular starter in team on the fringes of Champions league qualification in the most difficult position on the pitch since the age of 17, and as things stand is still only 20. If we look at the best centre midfielders of the last generation, very few of them had as much experience at the level Rodwell has had by this age, or in my opinion looked as convincing a talent.

That was weird, I thought it was about Gibson at first and felt like I might be going insane.

26 passes per game, 81% completion in 09/10
25 passes per game, 83% completion in 10/11
27 passes per game, 87% completion in 11/12

Err...I suppose that's gradual progress. Still shockingly few passes per game, it doesn't look good when you're making half as many passes as Fellaini. Worse still is him playing less games in each season.

Have never really seen the fuss with Rodwell, I must admit. Have never seen anything to suggest he'll be top class as a midfielder, and he doesn't look to have anywhere near the level of talent of Smalling or Evans say at centre back either.

We seem to get linked with him for £20m every single transfer window despite this. There's a post up there speculating that he could end up being as good as Carrick; with all due respect to Carrick who I really rate and feel we'd be fucked without, we shouldn't be looking at players at the moment who have the potential to be of his standard - we should be looking at players at least of Carrick's standard with the potential to be better.

Rodwell just doesn't seem to be that player. I can't see him being as good as Carrick either, to be honest.

He needs to find a way to add more goals to his games, especially if he is going to play in midfield continually.

Why exactly? plenty of top midfielders dont score many goals. Hardly an issue given his natural style of play....
