Matthew Upson
Just a thought but he is a young decent and English defender who wouldnt cost the earth.
Kop in for Upson By PAT SHEEHAN GERARD HOULLIER wants Birmingham’s Matthew Upson to prop up his ageing Anfield defence. The Liverpool boss has had centre-half Upson under almost constant scrutiny as he looks to replace Sami Hyypia and Stephane Henchoz. Swiss defender Henchoz, 29, has struggled to maintain the high standards demanded at Anfield this season while Hyypia, 30, has had his lack of pace exposed several times. Upson, 24, who moved to St Andrew’s from Arsenal, will cost Houllier around £5million. He was surprisingly shipped out of Highbury by boss Arsene Wenger, who now insists he should definitely be part of England’s Euro 2004 squad. Upson is among the fastest defenders in the Premiership and one of Europe’s few naturally left-footed centre-backs. Birmingham have Upson under contract for the next two seasons and manager Steve Bruce will fight hard to keep him. But Bruce, who moved from Norwich to Manchester United during his playing career, knows only too well it is almost impossible for a player to resist the pull of one of the big five clubs. Upson won two championship medals while at Highbury and was the first English player bought by Wenger when he arrived from Luton in 1997 for £2m. He was reluctant to leave the Gunners but found it difficult to hold down a first-team place after suffering knee ligament damage and then a broken leg. But Upson, who has played six times for England, battled back successfully from those injuries and jumped at the chance to play regular football at Blues. Upson earns around £18,000 a week and a move to the Kop would almost certainly double his money. Liverpool forward Vladimir Smicer fears he could miss Euro 2004 after a scan revealed he suffered cartilage damage during Sunday’s 2-0 win against Middlesbrough. The Czech Republic striker has endured an injury-wrecked season and had only just returned from a three-month lay-off with an Achilles problem. Smicer lasted just 45 minutes against Boro. If his injury requires surgery, it will be touch and go whether he will be fit for the European Championships that kick off in Portugal on June 12. |

somebody who will have a huge impact on games.
Other players / fans would admire them greatly What I was trying to say before was we don't need anymore squad players, we bought enough of them already |

When Boring ask you to define a world class player DONT DO IT! Youre declaring war with him by doing so, a war that you will never win as Boring HATES discussion. Leave him in his perfect world and his perfect team made up of 11 Matthew Taylors backed by 11 Quinton Fortunes. Dont mess with his dream or else we can forget of having a good discussion in this CAF for a long long time |

One of the most annoying things:
What about this player.. what about that player... grow the fuck up, watch a player (note: more than 1 match), evaluate him, consider his place in our team, consider our needs.. and about a million other reasons before you throw stupid suggestions up in the air.. "Just a thought but he is a young decent and English defender who wouldnt cost the earth." That qualifies a million people and serves to aggravate the hell out of me. Fuck off. |

If I wanted 11 Quinton Fortunes in the squad, why would I suggest we sell the one Quinton Fortune we already have? You're as clueless as ever. Now, go back to work in that Internet cafe... |

Returning to the subject. I dont think that we need Matthew Upson. He is a very promising defender but what we need is a leader. |

Gaz--Rio--Ayala/Mexes--Micky (I've given up on Samuel...he's going to be with Chelsea most likely) That is a quality back four, rivaling any other. Micky has performed solidly in CD, but I still feel the CD needs a hardman, a leader. If Keane would move to CD, that would solve the need for a adding a defender for one or two seasons and give the back line a true leader. It would also allow Spector to be groomed by Keane, and O'Shea would provide depth at CD and LB, with Brown at CD and RB. Also would have Phil and Fortune as cover when injuries/suspensions occur. |

Also, bringing Queiroz back is a top goal too...or finding a bonafide #2 if he goes elsewhere. I also feel that Keane dropping to CD is a fairytale most likely, but it would extend his career another year and he could still take a match off here and there with Wes and JOS as cover. Also, by not bringing in a new CD that may not adapt quickly, Keane would step right in and marshall the defense and not miss a beat. Then having a Baraja or Alonso in Keane's old spot would make the side much better, IMO. |

Rooney is probably unlikely. I cannot see us buying Torres, unless someone we don't want to sell is sold... Alonso has as good as signed for Real Madrid. Baraja won't be signed. Davids has more or less agreed a deal with Barca. |

Point two: I am considering Upson since watching him playing for Arsenal and his recent performances for Birmingham city. Point three: Uniteds defence has been piss weak at times, Brown doesnt always cut it and anyone rating Brown higher than Upson is blind. Brown has some good games and I like the guy but he lacks consistancy. EG place in team Point four: Rio is suspended and our defence lacks depth which Upson provides. eg Need point five: Upson is fast, solid and fits the United mould and would develop even further at a club like United. Point six: He is English and plays at a high standard EG International, unlike a million other people who you claim are eligible and the fact that I have to point that out clearly indicates you are very slow individual. Basically put, your post is irrevelant bollocks, not unlike yourself really. |

"Just a thought but he is a young decent and English defender who wouldnt cost the earth."
VS 6 somewhat detailed points regarding why Upson would be a good signing. Maybe you should have documented some evalutive reasoning and a sound proposition before --like when you actually made the post. You throw a one-liner up in the air and expect me not to say anything? I like to see real argument. An opinion formulated through methodical and systematic reasoning --a real opinion. You failed to deliver that and that pissed me right off. Your opening post could and should have delivered more than, 'ooh just a quick thought..". Never had a problem with people suggesting transfer, hell why would I? But yeah when they are isolated points which lack directive, then yeah i sart to pout. |

Shanghai Shenhua in talks over Stoke defender Matthew Upson
Apparently the honeymoon between Pulis and Upson is over, i've heard a lot of people are surprised that Upson hasn't left Stoke in January. |

Just unreal how bad advice some players get from their men in charge. I just cannot imagine anything worse than having to play in China - no matter what the money are. I would even start playing with a local pub team rather than sinking to that sort of level.

Personally, if I was a footballer, especially one as average as Upson, I would jump at the opportunity to play and live around the world. |
