He's a playmaker/winger... don't think we need him tbh, I thought Arsenal would've gone for him to replace Hleb or strengthen their squad. Great signing for Spurs, I guess he can play on the left and drift inside.

Saw an interview several months ago with his Croatia teammate Dario Srna, who was convinced that Modric would be joining Chelsea. Can't trust anyone these days.

Wasn't Newcastle saying he was going there? I thought they reported that Dinamo Zagreb vice-president Zdravko Mamic met Newcastle representatives this week for talks over Mordic.

To be honest I thought he was too good for Newcastle, the Spurs move makes better sense.

At least he will be playing for one of our feeder clubs if he is a hit in PL.

If his performance at Wembley is anything to go by, he will be a sensation.
Modern football really lacks playmakers from the middle of the field so it will be interesting to see how he gets on at Spurs.

Modric signs for Spurs
Midfielder agrees terms for Premiership move
26th April 2008

Tottenham have signed the highly-rated Croatia midfielder Luka Modric for a fee believed to be in excess of £15m. The 22-year-old has agreed personal terms at White Hart Lane and will leave Dinamo Zagreb for London this summer subject to him passing a medical.

Modric, who has already been capped more than 20 times by his country, was reported to have been courted by many of Europe's top clubs including Chelsea, Arsenal and, most recently, Newcastle. He must now obtain a work permit but that will be a formality given his status as one of the continent's most coveted talents.

Spurs have fended off keen interest from Newcastle to sign Modric, with Magpies boss Kevin Keegan admitting he is a fan of the schemer earlier this week. "If you had a list of the midfield players around Europe who Newcastle could possibly attract, Luka Modric would be one of them," said Keegan. "I think he would be pretty much on everyone else's list as well because he is a fantastic prospect.

"If you look at the midfield players who have a fantastic future, he would be one of them. But every other club in the league, from Arsenal and Manchester United, would like Modric."

Fantastic little player. As someone said in the other thread the player in the world that reminds most of Scholes.

He will be a hit in Premier League.

Indeed, excellent business. Modric is a class act, Ramos is really building a side that will challenge for a Champions League spot. Bale is coming back from injury, they'll probably keep Berbatov and Keane, Modric is arriving and there might be a few other top class players heading towards WHL. I'd love to see Spurs taking fourth spot from Liverpool next year... oh, no wait. Next year...

If they could stabilize their back-line, they could do even better than a fourth place.

Bale and Hutton have potential to be as good as any pair of fullbacks in the league. Modric, Lennon, Keane and Berbatov are almost as good as it gets in the midfield and the attack.

They already are a joy to watch, could be even better next year.

If Spurs keep buying like that this summer then they could make a realistic challenge for the top 4, but we've heard that the last 2 years i 'spose.

Wow! Great signing ... has taken me and most other Spurs fans by surprise - the club kept their cards very close to their chest on this one.

Good business also to tie up this deal early, well before other clubs have really gotten their transfer dealings into gear .. and before Euro 2008 has a chance to push up prices.

Great signing..definitely adds a new dimension to their midfield, from what I've seen of Modric, I really think he'll be a huge success.

This might be a silly question but how can they sign someone outside the transfer window?

i beleive you can agree sales/contracts anytime BUT you can only get a hold of the player's registration and the player can only move during the windows.

They are gonna lose Berbatov which will hurt them badly, Defoe was miles better than Bent and they let him go, so all of a sudden they might be a little short up front with just Keane as their only top level striker

Fat chance, he would also have to give a Berbatov a top 4 type new contract, and well in the end Berbatov would still probably leave

I'm assuming that Modric will play in LM (not LW) for us - although he can play anywhere across the midfield. So if we can sign a quality DM this summer - someone like Veloso - then this looks to me to be a very strong outfield team:

Hutton - Woodgate - King - Bale
------------ Veloso --------
Lennon ----- Jenas ----- Modric
------ Berbatov - Keane

We'd have a very fluid attacking midfield, with several players having the capacity to move about freely, swapping sides, playing more centrally or playing 'in the hole' behind the strikers.

Some may say that Veloso (or a player of his ilk/quality) is not a realistic target for us, but I reckon the signing of Modric proves otherwise.

Of course Berbatov may well leave this summer, but if so I'd be quite relaxed about Bent taking his starting place - especially with 30m+ Berbs cash to spend and a strong attacking midfield behind our strikers to create chances and open up the play.

My optimism for next season has now risen a notch or two.

Mordric would be playing in the center in place of Jenas who would be warming the bench.

I think you might be surprised on this one. I'd expect to see either Modric in LM, or (if we don't sign a new DM) Jenas taking the DM role with Modric in attacking CM.

Jenas has played DM before and done well. But either way I'd bet he'll be in our starting XI next season.

Last think you need is Jenas in DM role given your defensive woes.

Modric's arrival will probably be funded by Berbatovs departure.

Add on another 20m to Modric's fee and you may be right.

Why? hes not English

If you have $0 you cant buy someone for $15 Million. If you sell Berbatov for your claimed 35 million then you can afford someone for 15 million... do you get it?

Who else in your team is worth 15 million or above?
