Podolski, shwienstiger and klose all seem to have better technique then I imagined and they are all very, very fast. Three very good player who I think a lot of teams in the premeier league should be looking at.

Anyway I thought lahm did pretty well last night even defensivly excpet for 1 mistake. Motson just kept putting him down, I think a few people have latched onto that. But he's very good and all the games I have watched of him, he's been consistently good attacking wise and defensivly.

his technique has always been underrated. he can play it on the floor and picks the simple pass to keep moving and gets into space. sure he isn't in the top echelon of strikers, but he's more than just a header merchant.

Didn't have it in the first leg either. Rooney was playing on the opposite flank.

Oh was he rightback no 2 and Park was leftback no 2? I thought it was the other way round.

I think you're missing the main point (as usual) which was that Evra didn't handle Messi on his own since you double teamed your fullbacks.

Peterestorey has a point, UNited had two full backs on each side against Barca. Lahm was exposed by Podolskis lack of defending where as when Evra was up against Messi he had Rooney and Park so it was almost always 2 or 3.

But I was talking about the match at Old Trafford where Evra didn't have much help from Ronaldo who rarely tracks back.

In the Nou Camp yes, but not at Old Trafford. Evra generally plays behind Ronaldo for half a season and without the aid of a Flamini/Mascherano type defensive midfielder except when Hargreaves is playing in the middle. If Evra wasn't that good at defending we would get ripped apart down the left consistently.

It's a relative criticism of Evra (which applies equally to Clichy in my book). They're not as bad as Alves or Ramos, whose defensive qualities are lost on me, but they aren't defenders first which is how I like my fullbacks. I also think their attacking contribution, while eyecatching, isn't that effective in real terms. Wes Brown did very well for you last season, despite not being most people's idea of a fullback, because he delivered on his defensive duties and, even if not the most fluent going forward, still made space and got in a few crosses. Sagna, of course, is the ideal modern fullback - superb defender both individually and as part of the unit and no mug going forward.

Up until last season I would have agreed with that statement. Now I think the description on Sagna applies to Evra who's shown to be brilliant in defence an attack minded set up as well offering support sufficiently.

Yeah, it was pretty difficult to fault him last season so you might argue he's fixed that aspect of his game.

Given that Barcelona are going to pay €30m -ish for Alves, I have to admit Wenger pulled another cracker out of the bag in getting Sagna for £6m, when he is IMHO, much the better player(as a proper full back, rather than a wing back of sorts).

What is going on here, no backhanded comment, no hint of irony... you are losing your touch peterstorey

Evra is twice as good a defender as Clichy.

There's a reason I didnt list Sagna as well as Clichy and Eboue. Its because he can defend to some degree, like Evra.

He's a bit on the small side which seems un-normal for a German.

I wouldn't say Lahm is brilliant at defending, like he is going forward, but I do think he is solid enough when it comes to defending.

Sagna's a very good defender - much better than Evra in terms of positioning and tackling.

I had been thinking hard to remember a team which played our way and had two attacking fullbacks in their side. Unfortunately I cant remember of any club doing so. Mind Lahm is a great player and deserves loads of respect. There again if we did sign him up, then we would add extra stress on our central backs who would have to cover the inches of pitch left by Lahm and Evra whenever they move forward.

Arsenal use their full backs better than any other team in Europe, and Italy have fullbacks who go up and down the touchline a lot. Do Milan not?

In Italy teams use wingbacks instead of wingers.

If Ajax in 95 could survive with De Boer and Reitzieger as fullbacks. Conquering Europe in the process. Milan had Maldini and Tasotti. even we had Neville and Irwin in 99. What matter is how good your covering midfielders are. To help allow the fullbacks time to get back into position.

Besides, when Neville was fit we still had the best defence in the league. Despite having 2 extra wingers for fullbacks.

Tassotti and Neville where not attacking minded as Lahm and Evra + we are living in 2008 and not 1995

Thats not true at all. A Neville for example may not have Evra's flair. But he is just as attack minded

We won the league the season before last with one of the most attack minded fullback parings in Europe and had the best defense in the league. that year. FYI the year wasn't 1995.

Gary Neville is not the attacking minded type of fullback. Mind he had become more effective in moving forward but his major strengths are in the defensive part of his game.

There again you'll learn that you simply cannot argue with someone who has unlimited endurance in keeping coming back again and again, saying the same things.
