Plymouth snap up Cathcart

Plymouth have signed Manchester United youngster Craig Cathcart on a six-month loan deal.

The towering central defender, 19, has gone straight into boss Paul Sturrock's squad to face Wolves on Saturday after agreeing terms at Home Park.

"Craig is a big centre-half that we have been watching from afar," said Sturrock.

"He is a good centre-half with good qualities and you don't play for Manchester United if you're not of a very decent standard.

"I'm very happy to bring the boy on board and it is up to him to get himself in the team."

Should be good for the lad to get a bit of experience see if he can build on his pre-season promise.

Let's hope he's a first-team regular then... Good luck to the lad.

Good for him. I hope he does well. We have too many central defenders here right now. But all the departures do worry me.

I don't think both he and Evans can have a future with us. Looks promising though.

Its the right time for him to get playing at a higher level in the first team. Should be a good move.

It shouldn't really affect a centre back that much surely?

Why not? He seems like a ball playing centre back, I just hope he isn't stifled by some wannabe Wimbledon team.

But I see your point to some extent, Plymouth's playing style would be more interesting if he was a midfielder.

They signed him the day before the match, he most likely hadn't even had a single training session with the team. I believe a bit of patience would be called for here.

He looked very good in the pre season friendlies. From reports that I have read he is doing ok but not setting the world alight at the same time. I still have high hopes for him. He definately looked better in the friendlies than the level he is playing at.

PM'd to me by a newbie:

Cathcart started an early Carling cup game against Luton and was poor and looked pretty weak in the process, I think Sturrock wanted him to work on his strength a little. This lead to him not starting the first few games, probably a good thing as Argyle were truly shit, after 5 games they had picked up two points, were rooted to the bottom of the table and looked certain relegation favourites, they looked like the championship version of Spurs, shocking.

This lead Sturrock to make seven changes, including Cathcart getting his chance in the centre of defence playing along side Seip, they have gone on to form a great partnership at the back. The last seven games since sturrock made the changes and brought Cathcart in Argyle have won 5, drawn 1 with the only blemish being the unlucky away loss to Derby.

Overall Cathcart has been excellent and seems to have the right attitude, when he wasn't in the team he didn't throw a strop, he worked hard and earned his place back in the team, he hasn't put a foot wrong since, I believe he was awarded man of the match lastnight against Preston

I have high hopes for this lad, a lot of the same qualities as Jonny Evans. He's a big strong lad, but he's good on the ball, with great composure. Just needs more experience the way Jonny had.

Sounds like he is doing well at the moment. Good news. I think both he and Evans can make it into the first team but from what little I've seen the latter seems the more classier player.

Cathcart looked as good as Evans whenever I've seen him play. He is a different player, so lets hope both of them can make it.

Yep, Evans is a ball playing defender like Rio while Cathcart is a no-nonsense player like Vidic. He is better than Evans in the air.
