Senna rated at £25m
Daily Star - 'Wenger's £25m Senna blow
Arsenal have been warned off transfer target Marcos Senna and told he will cost them at least £25m. The Villarreal star was a huge hit for Spain at Euro 2008. He was linked with a move to the Emirates when Juventus decided to end their interest and go for Liverpool’s Xabi Alonso. But although Arsene Wenger is a huge admirer of the holding midfielder – describing him as the most consistent performer at the European Championships – Villarreal do not want to sell. President Fernando Roig said: “We are not frightened of the interest from some of the biggest clubs in the world since we have tied our captain to a €36m cancellation clause. “That’s the figure a club would have to pay if they want his services. For me, he was the most complete player of the whole tournament Villarreal President Fernando Roig “But the best thing is if he doesn’t go. He is very happy at Villarreal and we are very happy with him.” Senna, who was born in Brazil, was named in the Euro 2008 team of the tournament after helping Spain beat Germany in the final and was only just pipped by fellow midfielder Xavi for the player of the finals award. “For me, he was the most complete player of the whole tournament,” insisted Roig. Meanwhile, Barcelona will make one final attempt to sign Gunners striker Emmanuel Adebayor. The Spanish giants have already had a £24m bid turned down for the Togo hitman. They are refusing to match Wenger’s £35.8m valuation but are ready to test the Gunners’ resolve one last time. What a difference a tournament makes. Two years ago we were close to signing him for under £10m, now he's 2 years older and is apparently valued at £25m. When we were close to signing him a few years ago I was very happy with the price that was being quoted and knew he could have done the job, but I thought he would only have been an average signing compared to Hargreaves. Now I think he could do a great job for most teams in Europe who need a defensive midfielder. Would be a great signing for Arsenal but there are two things wrong with it; He's in his thirty's and it would be a fairly high transfer fee. He had a very good season for Villareal but without the Euro's he wouldn't have been linked with anyone at all. So will he get a move to a bigger club? |

Well he obviously won't go for that much, but his price will definitely have risen dramatically recently. He'll cost over £10m I would think.
And yeah he's 31, 29 when we were considering him. He can quite definitely play on until he's 35 though, one of those players who just gets better with age seeing as his vision, passing and positioning are all relative to experience rather than age. |

Well that's what the papers were saying but I doubt it, he was definitely worth more than £5m back then. They relied more on Riquelme back then though, now they rely on Senna to control matches. That's the main difference, plus he has become a better player imo.

He would have been a ridiculous bargain at the £6 million or so we nearly signed him for. Would be nice to see him get a move to a big club, but most of the top clubs seem fairly well stocked for central midfielders.

Inter and Juve could do with one, Arsenal are in need of one, Liverpool could get him instead of Barry if they were priced out but I doubt it. Van Bommel's getting on a bit too and is visibly on the decline imo so he could play for them possibly. |

He met with his club president on Tuesday to extend his contract by another 2 years.
Looked a good player in the Euros, but at 31 maybe a little to late in his career to be adapting to the Prem - not happening. |

Surely its a bollocks story. Wenger says something about Senna playing well at the Euros and suddenly they're interested in buying. I don't think so, especially not for that price.
Its not Wenger's style to sign players in their 30s. He's probably only offer him a 1 year contract, drop him for the second half of the season and then let him go for on a free transfer. |

Well Arsenal have consistently made it at least to the Champions League group stages over the past 10 years or so, this will only be Villareal's second time in the Champions league group stages. So not exactly the same, no. |

Inter has a few classy Defensive midfielders such as Esteban Cambiasso & Pele (supposed next centre mid wunderkid) Juventus also have plenty in that position such as Vieira & Momo Sissoko. Senna seems tailor-made for a club like Atletico Madrid who have the $ to splurge on talents thta big clubs have washed their hands off for whaetever reasons (like overpriced or too old) |

By the way, with regards to the discussion to the price & age, I think its is not too astronomical for a player of Senna's quality. He is 30 but players in his position such as Makelele, Roy Keane, Lotthar Matthaeus, Didier Deschamps all played top class football well into their mid 30s and for some like Matthaus until they were 37-38. Hence, if Sennna can keep playing top class football in centre midfield till he is 35, the transfer fee would be justified
