Signing Owen makes perfect sense for Fergie

http://www.mirror.co.uk/sport/column...9520-20415463/

Stan Collymore

12/05/2008

Owen will be in demand!

Congratulations to Manchester United for a richly deserved Premier League title. But everyone knows that manager Sir Alex Ferguson will already be looking to next season.

I said back in January that United, who at the time were struggling to score goals, could have done a lot worse than signing Michael Owen. He is a proven goalscorer and could well have boosted their goal output.

Since then, however, Wayne Rooney, Carlos Tevez and Cristiano Ronaldo have added those goals by the bucket-load.

You could be forgiven for thinking that weekend reports suggesting Fergie wants Owen were a bit of journalistic mischief making, but I'm not so sure.

Fergie always has an eye for the extraordinary signing. He wanted me from Forest, only for Frank Clark to blank his call at the time.

If you give Owen the service he will score. And with great service guaranteed at Old Trafford there's no reason why Owen couldn't get 30 goals next season, making United even more formidable.

To be fair, Stan, you were a far more logical signing than Owen.

Fergie confirmed yesterday on Skysport that there is no truth in the story.

Fergie also said we are not going to sell Veron. He was off a few days later.

We already have two supporting strikers. We need is two main strikers that can lead the line and preferably they need to be tall. Manucho is one of them the other one is yet to be known (Fergie must know).

lost a couple yards which he won't get back. the finishing is still there, but he won't separate from defenses like he used to. he'll rely more and more on his fox in the box instincts.

No - of course he'd deny it. He's under contract at Newcastle and United's season is still going...

You think Collymore is more a United/Ferguson type player than Owen?

Thanks. That's what I thought. If we buy another midget up front he sure as hell has to be fast.

We don't need him...his ego'size may be as big as OT. We need a young potential great striker who'll not sulk when asked to stay on the bench.

We already have an injury prone striker past his best, why would we want another one?
