Juventus line up surprise move for Gary Cahill

Juventus are monitoring Gary Cahill as a possible long-term replacement for Fabio Cannavaro after getting a glowing reference from Fabio Capello.

And Milan are also tracking the performances of the Bolton centre-back.

The former U21 international, now 23, was called up to the full England squad for the World Cup qualifier against Kazakhstan in June after the withdrawal of Rio Ferdinand.

Bolton slapped a £20m price tag on Cahill earlier this year after interest from Arsenal. He moved to the Reebok Stadium from Aston Villa in January 2008 for £5m.

Julio cesar would be a perfect replacement for VDS obviously, but it won't happen. We might as well go for Cech.

If you're implying that it's Mourinho that makes Cesar good, then that certainly doesn't mean he won't be good if he moves to United...

I've seen Patricio in youth tournaments and in european matches for Sporting, and he's average. Julio Cesar on the other hand would be my first choice if we were to sign a new keeper. But I'd say its very unlikely we'll sign him. When was the last time Ferguson paid what he'd need to, to get Julio Cesar, on a keeper?

Never. More's the pity.

I've always thought no matter how much a manager spends to sign a world class keeper it's going to be money well spent.

Already very good and he's got bags of potential. He's always looked decent on the tele but i've been to around 6 Bolton games in the last 12 months and his intelligence and positioning is very impressive.

Man City to pounce for Liverpool's Benayoun

11.10.09 | tribalfootball.com
READ MORE NEWS ON: Chelsea, Liverpool, Manchester City, Mark Hughes, Rafa Benitez
Liverpool midfielder Yossi Benayoun is in the sights of Manchester City boss Mark Hughes.

The News of the World says Benayoun has hopped on to City's radar after the midfielder was named on the bench for last Sunday's title-jolting 2-0 defeat by Chelsea at Stamford Bridge.

Hughes has been given the green light to spend heavily again in January as he chases a Champions League place for next season and Benayoun is suddenly in his sights.

The Israeli midfielder was made a scapegoat by Liverpool manager Rafa Benitez for the earlier 2-0 defeat against Fiorentina in the Champions League.

Barcelona plot raid for Fabregas, Mascherano, Vidic and Robinho
From The Times

Barcelona have made clear their intention to accelerate the drain of talent from the Barclays Premier League to Spain by declaring their interest in signing Robinho, the Manchester City forward, in January and their confidence in luring Cesc Fàbregas, the Arsenal captain, back to Catalonia in the summer.

Having seen Real Madrid, their great rivals, sign Cristiano Ronaldo from Manchester United and Álvaro Arbeloa and Xabi Alonso from Liverpool during the summer, Barcelona are eager to exploit the economic climate that has made La Liga more attractive to English-based players.

With high earners paying 50 per cent tax in Britain and the pound having weakened against the euro, Arsène Wenger, the Arsenal manager, has warned that the Premier League’s supremacy is under threat.

Txiki Begiristain, the Barcelona sporting director, confirmed yesterday that the club are interested in signing Robinho during the January transfer window and that he is “sure” Fàbregas will return one day to the club where he spent his formative years. Barcelona are also interested in Nemanja Vidic, the United defender, and Javier Mascherano, the Liverpool midfield player, both of whom would consider moving to Spain.

Mascherano could even come into Barcelona’s plans in January. “There are options for us to strengthen, yes,” Begiristain said. “We could look to buy a forward. He [Robinho] is a very interesting player and would be eligible to play in the Champions League.”

City are under no financial pressure to sell Robinho, but Mark Hughes, the manager, has concerns about the player’s ability to adapt to the physical demands of English football and to integrate into the squad. Hughes would sell Robinho if it enabled him to bid for a player such as Franck Ribéry, the Bayern Munich winger, who does not want a new deal with the German club. Barcelona and Real are also interested in Ribéry.

Fàbregas is a certain target for Barcelona in the summer. “He is a player who fits the Barça profile,” Begiristain said. “One day he will end up at the Nou Camp.”

Ronaldo, meanwhile, will miss Real’s two Champions League matches with AC Milan and Portugal’s final World Cup qualifier against Malta on Wednesday after being ruled out for four weeks with an ankle sprain. The winger limped out of his country’s 3-0 victory over Hungary on Saturday night.

Manchester United prepare January move for Philipp Lahm

15/11/2009

Manchester United are preparing a 15 million pound bid for Bayern Munich full back Phillip Lahm, according to a report in the Sunday Mirror this morning.

Anthony Clavane writes: "Manchester United are set to launch a £15million bid for Bayern Munich star Philipp Lahm this January. Sir Alex Ferguson is concerned at his ageing Manchester United defence, with Gary Neville in the twilight of his career and doubts over Rio Ferdinand’s long-term future."

Clavane adds: "Rafael is seen as Neville’s successor, but Ferguson sees 26-year-old Lahm as a potential mentor to the young Brazilian. Lahm is seriously considering his Bayern future after he was fined for publicly questioning Louis van Gaal’s role as manager."

Lahm, who can play as both a right back of left back, is contracted to the Bavarian giants until the end of the 2011/2012 season. The German international (54 caps/2 goals) is recognised as one of the finest defenders in world football.

During the opening months of 2009/2010, Lahm has played 16 matches for Bayern, providing one assist and picking up one yellow card as the Bundesliga side have struggled both domestically and in the Champions League.
