Gunners in shock move to steal United's Silvestre from under the noses of Sunderland By Ian Ladyman Last updated at 10:44 PM on 19th August 2008 Manchester United defender Mikael Silvestre was last night on the verge of an astonishing move to bitter rivals Arsenal. The 31-year-old France international had appeared to be on his way to Manchester City or Sunderland. But Sportsmail can reveal that Arsenal came in with a late offer to tempt Silvestre into one of the summer’s most unexpected transfers. Heading south: Silvestre on his way from Manchester United to Arsenal Sources close to the player revealed last night that the 31-year-old had been won over by Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger, one of his home country’s most revered coaches, and the promise of Champions League football at the Emirates. Arsenal will expect to pay United around £750,000 for a player who moved to Old Trafford from Inter Milan in the 1998-99 season and will offer him £50,000-a-week. What makes the deal so remarkable is that Wenger and his bitter rival, United manager Sir Alex Ferguson, have never before traded players in the 12 years they have been in opposition in the Premier League. The two men have often been in competition for the same player from overseas and have at times coveted members of each other’s squads. Wenger, for example, considered a move for David Beckham when he left United in 2003 and Ferguson always wanted former Gunners captain Patrick Vieira. But no deal between the two men has ever been close to coming off. Silvestre, who has made 361 appearances for United in all competitions, was thought to be holding out for a testimonial next year when he turned down summer approaches from Bordeaux and Paris Saint-Germain in his homeland. It was also thought that his family wanted to remain in the north-west. But it appears the opportunity to join another top English club, especially one with such a strong French influence, proved too hard to resist. Wenger wants to integrate Silvestre into a defensive unit that already contains Frenchmen Gael Clichy and William Gallas. The arrival of Silvestre — if the transfer goes through — would also probably spell the end for Arsenal’s unreliable Switzerland centre back Philippe Senderos link |

I hope you guys don't "bully" me in this thread. I think the way you have treated Glaston has been terrible.
By the way, I just heard some news from an ITK friend of mine, that it's a done deal, and that Silvestre will sign a contract in the region of 45,000 a week tomorrow morning - I'd be surprised if this deal doesn't go through.

Arsenal are taking the Mik
By ANTONY KASTRINAKIS Published: 20 Aug 2008 ARSENE WENGER has hijacked Manchester City’s bid to sign Mikael Silvestre. The Manchester United defender, 31, was undergoing a medical at neighbours City when he got a call telling him Arsenal were interested. Silvestre immediately abandoned the medical and hurtled down the M1 to meet Gunners boss Wenger and discuss terms. An Arsenal insider confirmed: “Arsene has been looking for experienced cover for Gael Clichy and he knows all about Mikael. "Arsene has followed his career with France and at United and the fact he is French is a bonus.” The France left-back, who joined United from Inter for £4m in 1999, made six appearances at United last season and was granted a free transfer this summer. City appeared to have pipped Portsmouth to Silvestre and boss Mark Hughes will be devastated to have missed out. http://www.thesun.co.uk/sol/homepage...cle1580002.ece |

Silvestre set for shock move to Arsenal
Daniel Taylor The Guardian, Wednesday August 20 2008 Mikaël Silvestre, the long-serving Manchester United defender, is on the verge of foregoing a testimonial season at Old Trafford to become the club's first player to be sold to Arsenal for 34 years. Arsène Wenger instigated the move yesterday after learning that the former France international had been holding talks with Manchester City and Sunderland. Silvestre had provisionally agreed a move to City before contacting the club yesterday to apologise and say he could not resist the opportunity to work for Wenger, to live in London and be involved in the Champions League. Paris St Germain had also offered the 31-year-old a contract but Silvestre informed Wenger last night that Arsenal were his first choice and, if everything goes according to plan, the deal will be concluded in time for him to make his debut at Fulham on Saturday. The move is expected to cost Arsenal in the region of £750,000 and will represent one of the biggest transfer shocks of the summer given United's usual reluctance to do business with any of their major rivals and the fact Ferguson has never allowed a player of his to defect to Wenger's side. Brian Kidd was the last United player to go in the same direction, in 1974, and Silvestre would have been entitled to a testimonial had he stayed at Old Trafford one more season. Another surprise for Arsenal's fans is that Wenger does not regard the former Internazionale defender merely as a squad player, or as a back-up for Gaël Clichy at left-back, but as a first-choice centre-half alongside William Gallas, primarily as a replacement for Philippe Senderos. City had been the first club to approach Silvestre and their failure to pull it off represents a major disappointment for Mark Hughes after his difficult start to life as Sven-Goran Eriksson's successor. City's problems were compounded yesterday when it emerged they were the subject of a possible Fifa inquiry into claims that they had failed to pay some of the money they allegedly owe in the £8m signing of the Brazilian international midfielder Elano Blumer from Shakhtar Donetsk. http://www.guardian.co.uk/football/2...nchesterunited 3 different papers with different owners are printing the same thing. Maybe this is Fergie's surprise
