United after USA youngster

from the People

http://www.people.co.uk/sport/footba...name_page.html

Quote:
Fergie glowing for ready Brek
By Alan Nixon

Alex Ferguson is chasing big Brek Shea - the new rising star of United States football.

Manchester United's top scout Jim Lawlor is preparing to fly to the States to watch the giant 18 year old, who is skipper of his country's youth team, on the orders of Old Traf ford boss Ferguson.

The 6ft 3in Shea, who plays for FC Dallas in the MLS, caught United's eye at last month's Toulon tournament in France, where he stood out despite being years younger than most in the under-23 category.

The powerful Shea, whose family is of Norwegian stock, can play at centrehalf or in midfield and has been outstanding in his first season as a professional in America.

Shea is a colourful character who used to have a Samuraistyle haircut until he was told to get it trimmed by a national youth team coach.

He now sports a more conservative look that would meet the approval of strict disciplinarian Sir Alex Ferguson. The billionaire Glazer family, who own United, would love an all-American boy to sign because the potential spin-offs would be huge.

However, that is not the main reason Fergie's spies are on his trail.

Shea is rated highly by many clubs and is also a target for Bolton Wanderers.

The youngster came over for a trial at the Reebok last season and they are hoping he returns.

However, a United move - backed by a concrete offer to the MLS - could see Shea head for Old Trafford. United chiefs will make a decision once all of the scouting reports are in.

Fergie is still looking for new blood at youth level where Unitedwere disappointing last season. There have also been discussions about the lack of height among United's homegrown stars.

Brek Shea? Is he John O'Shea's long lost brother or something. Let's steer clear of him, I don't like the idea of another Shea in our team.

Saw him play in the Toulon Tournament (I think that was the name...) thought he was dreadful as a striker. Couldn't bring down the ball, didn't make a single pass (no kidding) against Ivory Coast, looked way out of depth.

He was also played on the wing where he did better, has some speed on him nothing of note. Didn't do anything to be honest that warranted any notice except he had some mullet/ mohawk that he had bleached.

If he has any talent it's very very raw and I'd be verrrrry surprised if United were actually interested in him. I'm not a scout but I tend to be able to see at least some talent, didn't see anything there.. Then again he is only 17..

Also he's done nothing for his MLS team, not sure where all the praise is coming from in terms of his first season. He also was captain at Toulon so he must be captain of u-17 or u-20.

I call BS.

Watched a match of the Toulon tournament, i think USA vs Chile (who were fantastic btw). He came on as a sub and did pretty well, commanding in the air and goes forward alot. Still very young and raw though.

The only true "Americans" are the 100% native Americans of tribal descent. Everyone else has heritage to Europe, Africa, and elsewhere. I have Irish, Scottish, German and Cherokee Indian heritage. We're all mutts over here, well most of us are.

So this Brek kid... was he born in Norway or is one/both of his parents of Norwegian birth?

To be difficult the Native Americans are not ORIGINALLY from the US, they came over some thousands of years ago...

Africans are the only TRUE people from their "home," that is until we find an older skeleton in China *gasp*

Just a bump to keep this kid's name fresh in everyone's mind. Not suggesting he's ready for United now, but he has been one of the best players in MLS (I'd say top 2-3) after initially starting the season at centreback in a failed experiment and I expect someone in Europe will move for him sooner rather than later.

He was elected to the MLS All-Star team and probably would have started against United but his club were in Central America somewhere for a CONCACAF Champions League qualifier.

Here's a video his club put together, although it's only goals:

The one at 1:21 is reminiscent of a certain Mr. Giggs.

He used to look exactly like him, they move similar and have similar builds and Shea got the exact haircut Torres had at the time.

Saw his last game. He's improved but he's far too lazy for my liking. Quite like Altidore, and Berbatov two years ago. Rumors have floated around for ages that he'll make the jump.

I have watched him 4-5 times this year and he has improved a lot from a few years ago. That being said I do not see him playing for United any time soon but he could definitely play in England. I believe he just signed a new contract as well so MLS I am sure will only accept a nice offer for him
