United Monitor Pavlyuchenko, Huntelaar - Report

Manchester United are thought to have their eye on Russian ace Roman Pavlyuchenko, as well as the Netherlands' Klaas-Jan Huntelaar...

This is the first instance in which Pavlyuchenko, 26, has been linked with the Red Devils, and according to The Daily Star, the interest comes off the back of an impressive Euro 2008 campaign with Russia, in which he scored three goals and exhibited tremendous movement and energy.

Such a style would be well-suited to United's style of play, but the Russian's occasional waywardness in front of goal is one thing counting against him, while his 6'2 stature would make him an aerial threat in a United side currently somewhat lacking in that department.

Meanwhile Dutch international Klaas-Jan Huntelaar - who has been linked with United before as successor to Ruud van Nistelrooy - has once again emerged as a potential transfer target for the Red Devils after contract negotiations broke down with his club Ajax.

The powerful striker scored one goal in the one appearance he was afforded at Euro 2008 - otherwise left out in favour of van Nistelrooy, by incoming Ajax coach Marco van Basten. Perhaps such an ominous sign has led the 24-year-old, who previously stated van Basten's appointment had inspired him to stay, to change his mind.

Chelsea are also thought to be on the look out for the prolific forward as a replacement for Didier Drogba, should the Cote d'Ivoire international depart Stamford Bridge for Milan this summer after all.

United, meanwhile, are thought to be chasing Dimitar Berbatov as their primary target for a target-man striker, with Pavlyuchenko and Huntelaar possibly serving as slightly cheaper and/or younger alternatives.

I like Pavlyuchenko... But, it would be nice to have a look at Pogrebnyak too...

For what it's worth, Pavlyuchenko doesn't always make Spartak Moscow's first team these days.

Yes i like the look of Pavlyuchenko as well. He will probably be one of our secondary targets though.

Well, they are all guesses.

Pavlyuchenko is nowhere near good enough for us. I hope this is just muppetry.

Horse shit.

Hunting Larss comes from a year or so ago, and they just reran those stories and plugged in a name from a person who did well at the Euros in spite of the fact none of them have ever seen him in his league.

I was getting ready to see Huntelaar in action at Euros, but it wasn't to be; so i wont be prejudging how good he actually is.

Goal seem to just make up their articles. that is a reporter's view of our targets in the hope that if we do sign either of those two he can claim he knew it all along. But really he knows as much about it as any of us.

They are only slightly less bad than tribalfootball. Nearly all of their articles could easily have been written by any Caftard who has been keeping up with the latest events and rumors.

Mostly the rumors.

huntelaar is probably a distant third choice for us if he's even on the radar.

I will be shocked if we are chasing the Hunter. As for the Russian. He is slightly less clinical version of Torres. So I can see why we might look at him.

If all we are after is a slightly experienced back up striker then Pavlyuchenko might not be a bad shout.

Agreed. he'd give us a delightlful different option to Rooney and Tevez. On top of complimenting them.

He is much slower, and doesn't have a particularly good touch. I would have to disagree that he's at all like Torres.

I guess you didn't watch the tournament then? He has a good touch from what I've seen and, although not being as fast as Torres, he's certainly no slouch either.

Also, every time Akinfeev kicked the ball up field, Pavlyuchenko was there to hold it up and it seemed to me that every time he succeeded in either beating his man or laying it off to a team mate. He has impressed me a lot during Euro 2008.

I did, and I think we'll have to agree to disagree on this one. His touch looked far from sure to me, and looking at him I think he'd find the pace of the Premier League tough.

Fair enough. Hope he gets a chance to at least prove himself in the Premier League though.

The big question is: Where is Huntelaar heading to?

Tottenham Hotspur chairman Daniel Levy has had a £10m offer for Russian striker Roman Pavlyuchenko knocked back by Spartak Moscow.
The Daily Mirror claims that Pavyuchenko, and Spurs, were keen - but Spartak were not willing to sell to a club that they didn't consider as a step up for the star who was one of the stars of Euro 2008.

The club's general director Sergei Shavlo declared: " We have had two offers. One is from an English team.

"Since it's not a team playing in the Champions League we are more likely than not to reject their offer."

Meanwhile, Leyton Orient have signed Spurs striker Simon Dawkins, 20, on a six-month loan deal.

This follows the departure of youngster Joe Martin to Blackpool on a two-year-deal

That champions league bit is a bit odd, do they mean from the point of view of the player wanting to play at that level. Or do they believe they could get more money from a club playing in the CL?

I only saw him at the Euro's and before that i'll be honest and say i hadn't really heard too much about him.

As i've said before though 'd be wary of signing a player on the back of a decent performance at the Euro's. Its not always a good way to judge a player.
