Middlesbrough Football Club nicknamed MFC, Smoggies, and The Boro, are a professional football club based in Middlesbrough, Teesside, England; and were founded as an amateur team in 1876 by members of the Middlesbrough Amateur Cricket Club wishing to stay fit during the winter. The club retained its amateur status until 1889 when several members of Middlesbrough FC split to form Middlesbrough Ironoplis over a dispute; and became a fully professional football club in 1899. They were one of the founding members of the Premier League in 1992, and enjoyed one of its most successful periods following the appointment of former Manchester United legend Bryan Robson in 1994, when they gained promotion to the Premier League; followed by former former Manchester United assistant manager, Steve McClaren in 2001, under whom Middlesbrough reached the UEFA Cup Final in 2006; and won the League Cup in 2004. Despite their relatively lower profile, Middlesbrough have hosted some of the more famous names in football since the 1990s, including the likes of Robson, Juninho, Gascoigne, Mendieta, Ravanelli, and Hasselbaink. Middlesbrough play their homes games at the Riverside Stadium, and share a historic rivalry with Newcastle United and Sunderland.

Hopefully we can "rest" Rooney and stop this ridiculous 10 v 11 experiment every game.

Can we just not play Rooney for this? Please?

    ------------------ De Gea
    Darmian - Smalling - Jones - Rojo
    ------- Schneiderlin - Carrick
    Lingard -------- Pereira --- Memphis
    ----------------- Martial

Maybe go for something like this. I want us to take this competition a little more seriously as it's a decent chance at silverware, but Lingard and Pereira deserve minutes.

    Darmian
    Jones
    Blind
    Marcos Rojo

    Carrick
    Schneiderlin

    Lingard
    Fellaini
    Memphis

    Martial

SUBS: Romero, Smalling, Schweinsteiger, Ander Herrera, Mata, Young, Rooney.

Bring in Blind, Carrick, Lingard, Fellaini and Memphis from the start to keep some freshness. Could see Pereira involved too I guess.

I care very little for COC..

I'd rather see the youngsters like Pierera, Lingard, Wilson get some game time. Hopefully see Memphis get a game and remind LVG what he can do.

Plenty of tickets available for this game. Should be a good one to watch, Boro ain't a bad team and should be close for promotion at the end of the season. Can see us putting a few past them and putting on a good show.

I'd like to see us go for this trophy, we might have a good chance.

Does anyone know the TV coverage for this game? It was chaos on the game thread when we played Ipswich because no one knew where they could find the broadcast.

I'd rest Schneiderlin for this one he is becoming our most important outfield player so this is one of the few games we can afford to rest him.

Agree mostly. But I think we may play McNair (if he's not injured or something) somewhere along the back.

I really think Pereira and Lingard should both start. Maybe we'll play Depay as striker and Pereira on the left. But no idea what LvG will pull out of his hat. Maybe Rooney will start in this too.

Feck, going to miss this game because I have 2 exams back to back, during this time
Van Gaal usually doesn't like rotating too much but he should for this as we've had 3 really tough games over the past week and a lot of travelling, and go away to Crystal Palace next weekend. My guess is:

    Romero/De Gea
    Darmian Jones Rojo Blind
    Carrick Fellaini
    Lingard Pereira Memphis
    Rooney

Hopefully a comfortable win, and hopefully Memphis finds some form again for a confidence boost.

    Please, just don't play Rooney.

Boro are doing quite well this season. Completely forgot Downing joined them in the summer - bit of a weird move, seeing as he had a decent season at West Ham. I know it's his boyhood club but...yeah. Strange.

Ah, ok. I didn't know he was injured. Jones and Blind then. Do we have anyone else we could play or sub on at left back ? I'd hate to see Rojo get injured, with Shaw out long term...and seeing as LvG apparently considers him first choice LB now. and I guess Blackett is on loan.

Rest as many players as possible. Please LVG!

    De Gea
    Darmian-Smalling-Blind-Young
    Carrick-Fellaini
    Lingard-Pereira-Memphis
    Wilson

subs: Romero, Jones, Rojo; Herrera, Goss; Mata, Rooney

Or maybe Jones starting and Smalling on the bench. Jones is more prone to an injury though.
If Wilson is not well then start Rooney. We need to give Martial a rest whenever we can.

Cameron Borthwick-Jackson is the only natural left back from the U21s (but I think he also had been out for a short while,it's quite hard to keep updated about the injury situation when there's only 1 fecking game this month).Varela also can play left back but I'm unconvincing about him there at U21s level let alone first team.James Weir is very versatile and can do a job at left back, would be equivalent of playing Young at left back at first team level.

So in a nutshell, I think LVG would just put a senior player there.Probably Darmian.

Memphis and Lingard have to start. I'd rest Martial, way too important for this game. Same defense with Darmian starting on the right. Fellaini to start as well as Carrick if fit. Wilson to start up front.

I wouldn't drop Rooney for this game, we are playing a team at his current level and he might shave a couple more off that record.

Memphis, Perreira, Lingard and martial to start this imo. Wilson as a sub in the second half. Martial as no.9.

Carrick to get a game too

How is Middlesbrough's form lately in championship? They stunned City last season in FA cup and had given a tough fight to Liverpool in League cup earlier.
