Tottenham Hotspur Football Club, commonly referred to simply as Tottenham or Spurs (and nicknamed The Lilywhites), are a professional football club based in Tottenham, London. The Hotspur Football Club was formed in 1882 by a group of school boys, mostly aged 13 to 14, from Tottenham Grammar School and Saint John's Middle Class School who were members of the Hotspur Cricket Club formed two years earlier. Initially, the boys that formed Hotspur Football Club played games between themselves and friendly matches against other local clubs. The team entered their first cup competition in the London Association Cup, and won their first competitive match on 17 October 1885. The club turned professional on 20 December 1895, and in the summer of 1896 they were admitted to the Division One of the Southern League. On 2 March 1898, the club also became a limited company, the Tottenham Hotspur Football and Athletic Company.

Tottenham were the first club in the 20th century to achieve the League and FA Cup Double, winning both competitions in the 1960-61 season. After successfully defending the FA Cup in 1962, in 1963 they became the first British club to win a UEFA club competition – the European Cup Winners' Cup. In 1967, Spurs won the FA Cup for a third time in the 1960s. In the 1970s Tottenham won the League Cup on two occasions and were the inaugural winner of the UEFA Cup in 1972, becoming the first British club to win two different major European trophies. In the 1980s Spurs won several trophies: the FA Cup twice, FA Community Shield and the UEFA Cup in 1984. In the 1990s the club won the FA Cup and the League Cup. When they won the League Cup once more in 2008, it meant that they had won a major trophy in each of the last six decades – an achievement only matched by Manchester United.

Tottenham supporters have rivalries with several clubs, mainly within the London area. The fiercest of these is with north London rivals Arsenal (with matches between them termed the North London derby). They also share notable rivalries with fellow London clubs Chelsea and West Ham United. Tottenham currently play their home games at Wembley Stadium - with White Hart Lane being dismantled to make way for a new stadium as a part of the Northumberland Development Project.

    De Gea

    Valencia Bailly Smalling Young
    Matic
    Herrera Pogba
    Lingard Lukaku Sanchez

Only question mark is over Smalling's partner, I think.

I think the only interest in team selection will be who plays inside left or up front with Lukaku:

    ................ DDG
    Valencia Jones Smalling Young
    ...... Herrera Matic Pogba
    .............. Lingard
    ........ Lukaku Sanchez

I’d have liked to have seen Young play RB tonight, but Valencia’s game is fine away at Spurs.

    I think this.

We really should be exploiting their high line. Rashford would be a good choice.

    Only dead certs to start IMO are;

De Gea, Valencia, Smalling, Young, Matic, Pogba, and Lukaku.

From today's game, I think only Herrera has almost definitely played himself into the starting XI at Wembley (though he was probably 90% sure to start anyway).

Lingard gave the ball away a bit too much against Bournemouth, while Darmian, Jones, and Shaw were all pretty average or poor, IMO. Rashford and Martial did reasonably well bar finishing and finding that last half a yard. The attacking positions (either side of Lukaku) are very much up for grabs, I wouldn't be surprised at any combination (bar the ridiculous Mata + Lingard).

I think Bailly is favourite to partner Smalling, but Lindelof is realistic as well. Jones has played himself out of the side after tonight and Rojo won't be thrown in.

    Game of the season.

    DDG
    Valencia - Smalling - Bailly - Young
    Matic
    Herrera - Pogba
    Lingard - Lukaku - Sanchez
Most important tip for having a chance in this game : Don't fecking concede a goal in 11 seconds ! Start the game on high alert for feck sake !!

    Lads, it’s Spurs.

Just don’t concede in the first 10 seconds this time and let’s smash those limp cocks.

    Hopefully that’s Mourinho’s team talk.

    Team should be:

    DDG
    Bailly Smalling Lindelof
    Lingard Herrera Pogba Shaw
    Rashford Lukaku Martial

Tottenham play a high line so Rashford/Martial are a must. I really believe we can catch Spurs out with this line up. Lingard is nailed on to play. He is the ultimate big game player and Wembley is his 2nd home. He should definitely start. We need width from the wingbacks and then we can isolate Martial and Rashford 1 on 1. They should all play. No chance this will happen but this team is the team with the capability to play the best football we can. I'm fed up of our fullbacks not providing the width we need and stifling our attacking play. Better to not even go with fullbacks.

Don't want Lingard to start. He doesn't do enough on the right wing and is generally ineffective there and easily marked out. Need the pace and individuality and crossing ability of either Rashford or Martial to be the other winger here, since they'll probably control a lot of the game and we'll look to hit on the counter. Lingard is just way too easily shut out in games like this. Not sure on Smalling's CB partner either, could be Jones or Bailly. Never been too convinced with a Smalling - Bailly partnership, though Smalling-Jones had a horror show vs Spurs in January, so who knows. I'd feel oddly confident with Smalling - Jones tbh.
    Hoping for:
    De Gea
    Valencia Smalling Jones Young
    Herrera Matic Pogba
    Rashford Sanchez
    Lukaku

I would be shocked if Sanchez starts on Saturday. Pogba-Sanchez want to occupy the same space on the left. Not sure it works. Sanchez will give the ball away a dozen times.

Martial, Lukaku, Rashford and Lingard would be my front 4 vs Spurs

I was at that game. There was a bloke in front of me strolling in with a big smile on his face .A mate he was with had to nudge him to look at the big screen. His face dropped. It was like his dog just died. Shambles of a game that was. I think we will go with a three man midfield this time.

But we need a better performance from Jones/Smalling if they start.

I really fear for this game. Our defenders our so bad on the ball and Spurs completely exploited this weakness by aggressively pressing our back four high up the pitch and we had no answers.

We tried to go long but Vertonghen has dominated Lukaku in every battle I've seen from them going back to the latter's Everton days.

What I will say is Jose rises to these occassions while Pochettino has often bottled it for lack of a better word.

Tend to agree with this. The ball simply doesn't stick with Sanchez. He loses the ball a lot, which makes it difficult to build attacks. The second goal vs Bournemouth was fantastic. Great, instinctive play I don't think we would see with Sanchez.

I'll be at this game on the weekend. Hoping we can get the win and ruin it for spurs!

    I will go with this:

    De Gea
    Valencia - Smalling - Bailly - Young
    Matic - Herrera - Pogba
    Rashford - Lukaku - Martial

I wont start Lingard cuz he has not been that good in last 3 matches apart from his energy and running, just too many loose touches and mispasses.

Jose would want to include Fellaini there somewhere to play hoof ball though.

    Score prediction: United 0 - 2 Spurs

Spurs went 4-3-1-2 against City. Should we go 3-5-1-1 like City did to match them?

Even if they play 4-2-3-1, Eriksen will be a problem. He overloaded us in the midfield the last time gave us a tough time. Juve brought in Matuidi in their second leg game against Spurs to follow Eriksen around and let Sandro pick up Trippier. Should we consider doing something similar?
