This is pretty mindblowing. If you recall, Newcastle had 2 games in hand before the last day of the season, and had they won they'd have been level on points with us. So in the event of possible points and Goal difference being equal, the FA booked in a Wembley final between the pair. Here's a ticket for the proposed play off.

I remember rumours of this, but had no idea this was actually going to happn. We'd have flattened them I reckon. Their defense was shocking by that point.

Never heard about this, but a play-off to decide a championship would be a great end to the season. I wonder if they had any contingencies in place in 2012.

We would have had one in 2012 if only we had lost 1-2 instead of 1-6 vs City.

£15......prices haven't gone up much then have they

Seen this a few times, it pops up every now and then. I remember the hype at the time for this as if it was actually going to happen. Which it wasn't :)

Wow, unreal. I remember them from that season as this all-conquering attacking force and us as a dour side who ground out results, yet we hit near 90 goals and they barely outscored us.

Considering we should have only lost that game 3-1 at most probably best not to think about it either.

What makes it worse is at 3-1 down with ten men we were absolutely idiotic and poured forward leaving huge gaps

So in an effort to banish those vile memories and get the thread back on track lets all reminisce about Van Persies last minute winner at the Ethiad the following season and Cantonas volley at St James Park in the 95/96 season :)

Forgot Andrew scored with his first touch. Do remember Pally getting a cheer off the Boro fans when he lifted the trophy. Thanks for posting.

I've always hated Riverside, but that was a nice easy stroll in the park to win the league.

I remember the run in as being us winning every game 1-0 with Cantona scoring.
The peak of which being Newcastle absolutely storming us, and us winning at their place. I was so young then, I had to check teletext the next morning for the score!

As a child I remember trying to replicate Cantonas volley for months afterwards. I couldn't.

Remember a Boro fan that day with his face painted black and white with a sad smile and tear drops with Keegan on his forehead. Their fans took great pleasure in watching Newcastle fall apart.

Feck it, another couple of great victories during the run-in that great season with Cantona, Keane, and the CO92 in full flight:

[Edit]: shite video for the 5-0 against Forest only showing the opening mins, this'll have to do:

Great to beat Forest like that after they'd beaten us at OT the previous season with a Collymore wonder-strike.

Interesting. I wonder if it would have been a cagey affair, as even in defeat Newcastle would have known they'd qualified for the champions league no matter what, whereas in a cup final there's really no guarantee she reward for being runner up.

I remember this being talked about, but I'm amazed tickets were even being produced.

What a cracking game that would have been. I reckon we'd have Pallister or Keane keeping Shearer in chains. I'm not sure we'd have flattened them though, didn't they beat us 5-0 that season?

Also, £15 for a ticket to Wembley for a game bigger than any cup final :D

That was the following season with the Philip Albert chip, followed closely by the 6-3 Southampton debacle.

Ah right you are. Grim times indeed, especially seeing Arsenal starting to come good around that time.

Well, at that time only the league champions qualified for the UCL. Newcastle ended up in the Uefa Cup.

Only the champions got Champions League football in 96. It would have been a fight for everything.

No, that was the season after. And Alan Shearer was still at Blackburn during the period of the proposed play-off. I think we'd have certainly smashed them. They were out on their feet by the end of that season. Where as we seemed like we could have played about 20 games. Cantona, the Nevilles, Becks, Scholes, Giggs had all hit form and Schmeichel was possibility at his career best.

Of all the games I've been to, this is the only one during which I ever managed to see myself on telly.

This is awesome! I've never seen this before, thanks for sharing! It'll definitely happen one day, maybe not in our lifetimes.
