Lots of Chilean fans observing the 20th anniversary of one of the most beautiful assists and goals in the history of our football. Probably the sexiest goal ever scored at Wembley by a National Team.

Oh boy, how great he was.

It's a shame Salas never really did it at club level. We were linked with him as was just about everybody after this game and then the '98 World Cup.

Remember watching that game as a kid. All the fuss made over it being Michael Owen's debut and a striker facing the other end provided all the headlines. Think with the team England had at the time there was massive overconfidence and barely anyone had heard of the Chilean players and they ran rings around us all night.

Remind me what happened with his failed transfer to us? We were heavily in for him if I recall but he went to Lazio instead?

That first goal is absolutely sensational, saw it live on TV but had forgotten how incredible the technique was. To control like that and volley it in one movement was something else

I remember dreaming about Matador Salas becoming a Red Devil a few nights after that game. Too bad it never happened :(

    Sweet goal.

They need to bring back those 'rail cams'(?) like the one behind the goal for the first goal.

Yes, absolutely sensational. That assist, though.

I won 2 quid of a mate at school that day. He was bigging up how Michael Owen was going to come on and murder the Chile defenders, and I basically said Salas would recreate the Ned Beatty scene from Deliverance would our two centre halfs.

I do recall he give me the money in 4 50 pences which I wasnt to thrilled with.

Hmm.... if that goal was scored by Jamie Varsy next week from a Mahrez-pass, nobody would even bring it up. Good goal, far from being amazing - poor defenders. Am I watching the wrong video?

If Vardy chested down a ball and quickly smashed a volley in, I'll show my arse in Argos window.

Someone proud to wear their countries shirt. Amazing to think in the modern game, I know.
