Real Salt Lake, also known as RSL, is an American professional football franchise based in the Salt Lake City suburb of Sandy, Utah, that plays in the MLS as a member of the Western Conference of the league. The club was founded on July 14, 2004 as the twelfth MLS franchise when Major League Soccer awarded an expansion franchise, and started playing in 2005 as an expansion team of the league under head coach John Ellinger.

In domestic football, Real Salt Lake won the 2009 MLS Cup and were runners-up in the 2013 MLS Cup, the Supporters Shield in 2010, and the 2013 edition of the U.S. Open Cup. The franchise's regional success to date was in the 2010/11 CONCACAF Champions League, where RSL finished runners-up in the tournament becoming the first American club, since the CONCACAF Champions League format was introduced in 2008, to advance to the final stage of the tournament.

The main rival of Real Salt Lake is the Colorado Rapids, with the two teams being the closest to each other geographically, and also competing for the annual Rocky Mountain Cup. The team also maintains smaller, fan-driven rivalries with both the Los Angeles Galaxy, as well as Sporting Kansas City. RSL plays its home games at Rio Tinto Stadium.

I hope Mitchell gets some time. Pretty disappointing to see us play Lingard then Darmian on the left in the first game.

10 PM EST. A little too late for me, but I guess I'll take it.

Happy that the next game is so soon.

Fecking 3am in UK..... I'd happily take 10pm.

The sooner America changes their time to sync with Uk purely so we can watch United pre-season friendlies at a decent time, the better

José confirmed in his post match interview that we are going to play with four defenders in both halfs against Salt Lake. The interesting part will be if he continue with Eric Bailly and Viggo Lindelöf playing together and if Lukaku will have a new partner this time. Rashford looked good but so did Martial.

Wonder what system it'll be then. 4-3-3, 4-2-3-1, and 4-4-2 are all possibilities.

Hope it's 4-4-2, which is the closest to the last one.

Good. Enough of this 3-5-2 nonsense.

The 3-5-2 looked fine, it can be an effective system when used correctly, Juventus used it the season they got to the CL final with Barca. We're going to be a counter attacking team, it's a good system for that.

Have you seen the game? Our movement was very nice to watch. If you want to go back to being a boring team, then yes, you're right.

I did see the game against LA G but I'm not going to take much from the performance against such rubbish opposition. I just don't like the idea of lining up with five defenders. LVG's 3-5-2 looked good in pre-season too.

Are we? Going to be a counter attacking team? Even in half the games at OT where the opponent just want to get a draw?

5 defenders? Second half, maybe, and even then we played A.Pereira as #6, hardly a defensive option too. But Lingard's a defender now?

Yeah, because you have to play 3-5-2 to be an entertaining team...

I'm with @whatwha on this one.

There are always times when the opponents leave some space behind if we press effectively in their half and once the ball is won, move it around fast enough. This is what we used to do in SAF's times but haven't done effectively since. We have become quite good at pressing but replacing Ibra with Lukaku should also help with our transitions.

We don't have to (theoretically), but we were indeed (for most of last season games).

Ridiculous name for a team. Even when factoring in US standards.

Seeing some of the line up predictions reaffirms my belief that we have failed to strengthen sufficiently this summer..

Jones, Smalling, Fellaini, Darmian, Lingard in particular just arent good enough to be starters in a team challenging for the PL.

Even though we were good at counters under SAF, we were not primarily 'a counter attacking team'. Nor will we primarily set out to be one under Jose. Something's wrong if we're not dominating midfield and possession against lesser clubs, especially at home.

To be honest, I don't expect anyone of them to be in the first XI next season. As backups they are fine I guess. But we are still taking a massive gamble in relying on our existing set for providing more goals as that was the challenge.

They shouldn't be starters but they almost inevitably will be by default due to our lack of signing better alternatives and the inevitability of getting injuries along the way.

That was my first thought to. Thankfully there is time for us to get more quality in, but I think expectations of winning the league are exaggerated.

Agreed, but the case being made here is we cannot go for wholesale squad revamps in any case; we are not as bad as AC Milan these days for crying out loud. Always moving four players on after bringing in solid first team players is the way that even Ferguson did it, mind you.

Agreed - but they do act as solid squad members. Fellaini, as you and I both agree, has his limits; but when used right, he can be quite menacing. Darmian and Lingard are utility players who can expected to do a job when you entrust them with, not to forget they can fill multiple positions.

As for Smalling and Jones, it is really hard to envisage both of them staying beyond this summer; though I heard Jose mentioning that our prospective club captains' list (when Carrick is not playing) has, albeit surprisingly, Smalling's name on it.

    Jones for the cull, then.

So no goal from Lukaku? I am actually more interested how he does against City, Real and Barca. He feeds on minnows. It's against challengers for the Top 4 that I want to see him scoring.

The Real Madrid game in the Super Cup is going to be a big indicator as to where we are IMO. It will tell us alot about certain players in our starting 11 and squad.

Absolutely. It'd be ok if they were just used very sparingly as subs, but many of those players play regularly, which is why we're a team trying to break into the top 4, rather than contenders.

This is the type of game Lukaku has to score in or we will have problems, especially at that price.
