Wondering if this would be better in the other part of the football forum though. To get non Man Utd teams.

    Since the 96/97 season:

Schmeichel, van der Sar, De Gea

    G. Neville, Rio, Vidic, Stam, Irwin, Evra, Brown, Rafael

Beckham, Giggs, Scholes, Keane, Ronaldo, Nani, Fletcher, Carrick

    Ruud, Rooney, van Persie, Cantona

I think that's the team. Park would have been useful, but there are enough runners in that team already. A lot of great attacking talent not getting in.

Born in 92, first football memories from 97.

Goalkeepers - Schmeichel, VDS, De Gea

Defenders - G. Neville, Brown, Irwin, Evra, Stam, Ferdinand, Vidic, Smalling

Midfielders - Beckham, Ronaldo, Giggs, Park, Keane (c), Scholes, Carrick, Pogba

Forwards - Cole, Solskjaer, van Nistelrooy, Rooney

Strikers were tough, loved RVP & Yorke but felt the 4 did more for us overall. Don't remember Eric sadly. Smalling edges it over Johnsen & Pogba over Fletch as he's a far superior player, even if he's not done as much for us as Fletcher yet.

It was hard leaving off one of RVP, Yorke or Cole but I always liked Berbatov. I also had to get O'Shea in there somewhere because every good team needs a utility player.

Three elite keepers expecting to play. Rookie mistake.

Van der Gouw would definitely be in mine.

    90 (although more realistically 95)

GK: De Gay, Schmikes, Van Der Sar

Def: Rio, Vidic, Pallister, GNevs, Evra, Irwin, O'Shea, Brown

Mid: Keano, Scholes, Veron, Beckham, Giggs, Carrick

Att: Ruud, Rooney, Cantona, Ronaldo, Solskjaer, Saha

    I'd play a 433 formation.

    Stam, Ferdinand, Vidic, Smalling

    Keane, Scholes, Pogba, Matic

    Ronaldo, Giggs, Kanchelskis, Nani

Really tried to squeeze Becks in there, 98/99 Becks was phenomenal but that’s my squad based on my own viewing.

If I had to pick an XI:

    ——————The Gay————
    —Neville—-Stam—-Ferdinand—-Evra-
    ———-Keane—Matic—-Scholes———
    —Kanchelskis —-Persie——Ronaldo—

    Alisson, Reina, Dudek

Carragher, Hyypia, Agger, VVD, Riise, Finnan, TAA, Robertson

Gerrard, Alonso, Mascherano, Hamann, Coutinho, Salah, Luis Garcia, Murphy

    Fowler, Owen, Torres, Suarez

Slim pickings in the GK and fullback areas, even Reina had a lot of mistakes in him. I'd like to say Klopp as manager but he can be a bit too kamikaze, so I'll go with Benitez for better balance. Starting XI assuming they are all at their highest Liverpool level:

Reina (tempted to say Alisson but still early days)
    TAA Carragher VVD Riise
    Mascherano Alonso
    Gerrard
    Salah Suarez Coutinho

Much harder than I thought. Really thin in the goalkeeper department and full backs but the forward players would outscore any team anyway.

    Alvaro Arbeloa
    Jamie Carragher

If I went from birth it'd be from 92/93, but I attended my first game in 97/98 so I'll go from then (which unfortunately means no Cantona):

Goalkeepers: Peter Schmeichel, David De Gea, Edwin van der Sar
Defenders: Gary Neville, Antonio Valencia, Patrice Evra, Dennis Irwin, Nemanja Vidic, Jaap Stam, Rio Ferdinand, Ronny Johnsen
Midfielders: Cristiano Ronaldo, David Beckham, Ryan Giggs, Roy Keane, Paul Scholes, Michael Carrick, Owen Hargreaves, Park Ji Sung
Forwards: Ruud van Nistelrooy, Wayne Rooney, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, Robin van Persie

Standby: Tim Howard, Rafael Da Silva, Wes Brown, Eric Bailly, Gabriel Heinze, Darren Fletcher, Paul Pogba, Nemanja Matic, Luis Nani, Carlos Tevez, Dimitar Berbatov, Dwight Yorke, Andy Cole

    --------------------Schmeichel
    Neville----Ferdinand--------Vidic-----Evra

I mean, thats basically just you're typical build-a-squad right?

A more interesting one (IMO) would be a World Cup squad of players that have actually been in a World Cup squad, and they would be as good as the year they played there... so you couldn't have Giggs at all, and you'd have to have 2006 Ronnie for example. (so you'd actually probably have 2002 Beckham starting ahead of him)

I remember seeing one of these once where you were limited by only one of each squad number, so you could have Beckham and Ronaldo, but you'd have to take pre-no. 7 Beckham, for example. Was a bit more interesting than "these are our best players".

    Manchester United 2008-Present

    Keepers: De Gea, Romero, Kuszczak
Defenders: Rafael, Neville, Ferdinand, Vidic, Smalling, Evans, Evra, Young
Midfielders: Scholes, Carrick, Pogba, Fletcher, Ronaldo, Valencia, Giggs, Nani
Forwards: Van Persie, Rooney, Lukaku, Chicharito

    4-4-2

    De Gea
    Rafael Ferdinand Vidic Evra
    Ronaldo Scholes Pogba/Carrick Giggs
    Rooney Van Persie

I picked this team based on a number of factors such as their performances for United, what they did or have done for the club and their talent to play in multiple positions.

With the keepers, I decided on a top starting keeper in De Gea and two reliable 2nd choice keepers in Romero and Kuszczak. The reason for the omission of Van Der Sar is because such an ambitious man would never accept a spot on the bench so close to retirement, nor does he deserve one.

Moving on to the defenders, I went for two attacking starting fullbacks in Evra and Rafael, with the back-ups to be Young and Neville. Sticking to the United way, seeing that I’m the “manager” of this team, Evra and Rafael’s jobs will be to overlap and get crosses in. As for the centre backs, Rio’s job will be to play as a ball-playing defender and Vida’s job will be to be the solid, hard best defender in the world, which he was at his peak which was around this time. Backups will be two solid, reliable title-winning centre backs in Evans and Smalling.

Going to the midfielders, the starting wingers will be two direct, pacey (Giggs less so as the years wore on, still had lots of quality though) wingers who could cross very well in Giggs and Ronaldo, with Ronaldo constantly cutting in and getting into the box to score. Backup wingers will be Nani and Valencia, also two direct speedy wingers who just misses out on the starting 11 based on the fact that they had less work rate than Giggs in Nani’s case and less talent than Ronaldo in Valencia’s case. The starting midfielders will be Scholes and Pogba or Carrick, depending on opposition and tactical needs. Fletcher will be on the bench as that energetic Ramsey-but-better midfielder who never moans and just gets on with the job.

As for the strikers, I’m going with one pacey-at-his-best creative yet fairly goalscoring striker in Rooney and one extremely talented pure lethal goalscoring genius in Van Persie who could also go wide to create space and whip crosses in, something I’m pleased that Lukaku is doing now. As they showed in Sir Alex’s last season, they are able to link up fantastically with them getting 43 goals combined in all competitions and assisting each other very frequently, as Rooney did for Van Persie in that Goal of The Season in 2012-13. Also, Lukaku on the bench will be the ambitious striker who can learn from his more experienced compatriots upfront and take over once Rooney loses form, as he used to do almost every season no matter how good he was. Then, it’s a shootout for the spot alongside Van Persie between two top strikers. As for Chicharito, he’s the reliable backup poacher who you can always rely on to get you a goal, spawny or not when you’re in a tight spot.

Lastly, I would say that this team would win the league in every season since 2008, which is from when this team is picked with the exception of last season as I don’t feel that its a 100 point team. Despite that though, I do also feel like this team would have won at least two more Champions Leagues (since 2008 of course), perhaps in the Chelsea 2012 and Barca 2009 seasons, as I still feel that the Chelsea win was a total fluke and in 2009, our actual team also made the final along with the reason that the Barca team had not reached their actual peak as the undisputed best team in the world yet.

Honestly, if I had to give this team a rating, it would be a 9.5/10 as while its not perfect (no team is), it’s still a team which covers all angles from starting and substitute goalkeepers to strikers.

MF: Scholes, Keane, Giggs, Beckham, Hargreaves, Park, Carrick, Fletcher
FW: Ronaldo, Rooney, van Nistelrooy, Cantona, van Persie

Hard to leave out Cole, Yorke, Solskjaer, and arguably Tevez or Lukaku, but I don't think the side needs another forward. Maybe if you class Ronaldo as more midfield back then, you could drop in one of those over say, Fletcher.

Back five would be any GK with Nev, Rio, Vida, Evra. Stam is the back-up CB of choice with Brown fourth choice, but he's in mainly as second choice RB as I think during the 2007-2009 or so era he was our best RB we've had other than Nev. Irwin can fill in at either fullback role and Hargreaves is another option at RB from the midfield selection.

The selection of midfield players is enough, with Scholes & Keane +1 being the likely choice all the time. The +1 either being another CM or adding Rooney/Cantona as a no.10 depending on formation. Ruud would lead the line with RvP as back-up. Flanked by mostly Ronaldo and Giggs.

    Reyna - Durrant
De Boer - Albertz - Cooper

Laudrup would play in a roaming role. Kuznetsov got injured early on but came at the peak of his powers and looked top class. Reyna/Durrant could be rotated for the likes of McCall, Ferguson, Tugay, Davis, Mendes. Klos as 23rd man.

    A never-nude? I thought he just liked cut-offs.
Starting from 1988 I'd have thought John Barnes would have been a certainty for you lot, with the likes of Beardsley, Grobbelaar and the older version of Rush probably featuring too. McManaman is another surprising omission.

    Utd from 1990 onwards:

    Schmeichel
    Irwin Rio Vidic Evra
    Beckham Keane Scholes Ronaldo
    Cantona RVN

    GK: Schmeichel, DDG, VDS
DEFENCE: Irwin, G. Neville, Evra, Rio, Vidic, Stam, Pallister
MIDFIELD: Beckham, Ronaldo, Giggs, Keane, Scholes, Robson, Carrick, Kanchelskis
ATTACK: Cantona, RVN, Rooney, RVP, Cole

Giggs would probably be in my starting XI most days. Not including one of our renowned super-subs in Ole or Chicharito is probably a mistake. We're ridiculously spoilt for choice up front with Ibra, Yorke, Sheringham, Saha and Huges not getting selected either, and there's great alternatives in midfield too with the likes of Pogba, Ince, Fletcher and Park not making the cut. Full back is the only area we're even slightly light on options.
