We may have heard it all before but this time it's for real. . . apparently.

A European League, consisting of 16 teams, intend to breakaway from UEFA/Champions League and possibly even their own national associations to play in a European Super League.

Indeed a letter on intent has been drawn up by such clubs with Bayern Munich apparently leading the way by legally checking how they can leave the Bundesliga and the Champions League

The man at Bayern responsible for this is the head of their legal department, Michael Gerlinger.

Teams, it seems, will be invited to play with Bayern, Real Madrid, FC Barcelona, Manchester United, Chelsea FC, Arsenal FC, Manchester City, Liverpool FC among the clubs mentioned.

All quite interesting especially considering Munich have applied to host the 2020-21 Champions League Final.

I think this is probably an inevitability.

    Thoughts?

Why not I say. As long as it makes more money. Money money money. That's all I care about. Have you seen how much money we make? Imagine more money. Money.

Spurs will still manage to bottle the league probably.

Not sure why the English clubs especially would be interested in this - the PL teams rake in the money each season from revenue and TV.

Not sure what team it was but I remember hearing when Atletico won La Liga that the team who finished 20th that season in England received more money that year.

The league would probably help teams in poorer leagues like Germany, France and Italy where there has been one dominant team for a long time.

Will there be promotion and relegation?

    I doubt there will be.

Why would anyone be opposed to this happening exactly?

Not having a go, genuinely interested.

    I think it’d be quality.

What would be quality about it exactly? I genuinely see no reason to be excited by it. It's a horrid idea, always has been.

Well tell me why you don’t want this to happen then.

A league full of the top clubs. I mean, what more do you want me to say? I like to watch big teams play each other.

Would you rather watch United vs Huddersfield or United vs Barcelona on a regular basis?

The main reasons are the self-appointed "elite" clubs are claiming the top of the sport PERMANENTLY for themselves with the main motive being for more money.

No more Leicester City's in the Champions League.

    Would this inevitably reduce standards?

I'm not against a European League of 16 teams but I'm against what seems to be an invite only tournament...... Feck that.

In the end I'd say an agreement will be reached with UEFA. A 16 team European League will happen in the future . . . with the games at the weekend but with qualification dependent on performance in that team's previous national league. . . the big clubs don't want the latter, of course.

Wouldn't mind it as an alteration to the Champions League format which needs a revamp, but to establish a permanent elite which are to breakaway from their leagues seems a bit shite. The top leagues which these elite clubs will breakaway from will become irrelevant on a global scale.

Do you go to the games? What happens to matchgoing fans? Next step after this is moving all the games to USA etc. It would really anger me and probably make me stop watching football.

At present Bournemouth have a bigger claim to be in that league than Manchester United......Can't you see the problem there?

A league of the "so-called" best teams may not necessarily be the best because others won't be invited. It'd be a league of traditionally big names.

If we ignore how the rest of the football world gets absolutely fecked by it, over saturation is a thing. Not every meal is a dessert.

I do go to games, yes.

Perhaps I have misunderstood exactly what this super league is.

But my first thought was that this wouldn’t mean us leaving the Premier League, even if Bayern want to leave their domestic league. This is more of a mini league which is an alternative to the Champions League, it just another tournament to run alongside it.

I wouldn’t want us to play games in the US. We are talking about a European league here.

English clubs will not go for it imo. They have it too good.
Let the 1 and 2 team leagues worry about this.

I can see argument among the clubs themselves deciding who the top 16 are. . . What would 7 times CL winning Milan think if they're left out (despite being off the radar at the top of European football for years now)?

English league was a 1/2 team league for most of the Fergie years.

Only when the billionaires arrived in England could more compete. . . . although I don't wish to derail the thread.

No, it involves 17 teams leaving their leagues and playing in a season 34 weeks long, with games on Wednesdays and Saturdays.

The US is the inevitable next step after that, as we have seen with the recent attempts from La Liga.

Ok, so if there was some sort of coeffiecnt / form ranking system which enabled clubs to join and get relegated from this European super league, would you be up for that then?

All I’m saying is the prospect of being in a league with the best teams in the world is an exciting prospect, that’s all.

We don’t know the ins and outs of how it will work just yet.

To me the idea isn't exciting. Because those games would lose all meaning seeing them so often. Plus I've no reason to care about us winning a super league, there's no prestige to it at all. It's just a cash grab.

Because the CL needed a revamp amid cries of boredom as Barca v Arsenal and PSG v Chelsea seemed to happen every year.
Could you imagine if it actually did? Say Utd and PSG are head to head for the title, what would the other sides be playing for? The quality could fall off a cliff.
Like us last year after we beat City with second more or less in the bag.

Like I say I'm not opposed to it.

An amended Champions League is the best way to do it.

How about 2 leagues of 8 teams?
    14 matches.
Top 2 of each into a SF
    Then F.

    Is this actually confirmed?

The original tweet and information in the opening post isn’t so definitive on this matter.

I wouldn’t want us to leave the Premier League, but if we could replace the likes of the EFL cup with a European super league then why not?

I'd say we would have accepted a super league invitation back then, but not now.
The foreign investment is kind of setting up a super league in England anyway.

Guessing what they want would be something like that with the remaining teams being from the Milan clubs, Napoli, Monaco, Lyon, Marseille, Sevilla. Might not be that many English clubs either.

    Good point.

Of course people enjoy their Man United v Real Madrid in the CL (or whatever equivalent fixture for your club).

With a European Super League more becomes less. Also massive costs to fans as inevitably away trips would be much more expensive and home tickets would take a huge hike.

Also less bragging . . . People do enjoy away matches at stadiums in their home countries. . . .

It looks like it is very close to happen.

I can understand especially Bayern, PSG and Juve. They are winning the league year for year.
