You gots to add Persona 4 dude! Masterpiece.

Also Chrono Trigger was a SNES game, Chrono Cross was a PS1 game.

Cool list though, I definitely haven't played as many JRPG's as you but I think I've played most of the 'big ones' at one point or another.

I'd say anyone starting off who has a PS4 needs to play Persona 5. Not only is it wildly accessible to modern players, it actually might, just might, be the best JRPG ever. What I mean by is that it's just so absurdly polished and nails about every facet of what a JRPG is that if someone doesn't like it, they probably won't like the older, less accessible JRPG's on the list. It's not my favourite, it's too recent in my memory to say that and I want to play it again at some point, but it's definitely like.. JRPG perfection.

Favourite JRPG's ever, I would go, in no order

    Chrono Trigger
    Persona 4 Golden
    Final Fantasy VI
    Final Fantasy VII
    Final Fantasy IX
    Grandia 2

No Ys games? I just started 8 on PS4 (it released originally on the Vita). Cool so far, definitely on the AJRPG side of things.

I'm afraid persona 4 is one of the games I've barely touched despite it being louded as a masterpiece. I'd rather leave that and most of the tales of, xenogears etc to others who are more experienced with them overall. I'll play Persona 4 gold someday for sure, but I can't say that day will come in time for making a proper review of it. :p

I haven't played any YS games, although I'm going to purchase the last Ys game once it comes out for the switch (want to have a fair amount of rpg/jrpg on the go on my switch).

I also don't have a Microsoft console, so Lost Odyssey which is said to be a absolutely fantastic (although a bit slow) rpg won't fit in on me doing the reviewing.

that's a shame, personally I thought it was worth purchasing my Vita just for it. You might find it difficult to play now seeing as you've played P5 which does polish a lot of the mechanics up but it's still amazing. Better story and characters, too. Definitely try find a way to play it if you can.

Considering the shear amount and depth, you are missing a hell of a lot of snes games there.

Yes, but I haven't filled out the list. Just started to feel tired so posted that as a place to begin. Still the overreaching idea is to have multiple people contribute to the thread and I'll edit the OP to link to the individual reviews, that way we can add as we please the games we have experience with. :)

Excellent thread and will follow it. Kind of a shame that Final Fantasy thread died when KingEric7 went full alien and I couldn't keep it alive in my own. Hoping that this becomes as big as that.

How does stuff like Mass Effect and Kotor compare (not in terms of quality but gameplay style)?

I've never really played any of the games listed other than about 30 minutes on a PS1 Final Fantasy game that didn't really grab my attention.

I feel uncertain about those. I haven't played the Mass Effect games, but Kotor I feel is very much old-school dungeons & dragons set in the star wars universe. So I'd probably put it more on a list containing Dragon Age, TW3, Icewind dale & the likes (if that makes sense?). Wouldn't mind if others wanted to put it on here however as it still falls within the RPG genre, I'll focus primarily on jrpg and rpgs with stuff that gives you a similar feeling to jrpgs, but anything that is within the RPG genre goes. I'll update the thread title to reflect that.

Very different combat and mechanics, but the same idea of levelling up, talking to loads of characters, travelling from place to place, save the world etc.

But yeah, combat wise, totally different.

Also generally less.. weird? Cause they're not Japanese games.

Isn't the combat pretty similar? Turn based moves with various levelled up skills and weapons having an impact?

I always thought the difference was just the overall tone and setting if the games. Plus the enormous hair and giant swords.

Well Mass Effect is a shooter and Kotor isn't turn based. But the level up and weapon thing is similar yep.

Kotor was definitely turn based, wasn't It? I remember queuing up my attacks for sure.

General rule of thumb for jrpg is that it is story-driven, you play a pre-determined character, while a western-rpg is more into letting you decide your story.

Two examples would be Final Fantasy 7. You follow in the footsteps of Sephiroth/Shinra as Cloud & his party, your path is more or less set and the story is written and just waiting to be told.

Skyrim on the other hand "drops" you into a world where you make your own decisions about who you want to stick with and what kind of person your character will be.

Naturally you'll have rpg's coming out of japan that are more tuned towards western audience, like the Dark Souls series or Dragons Dogma and vice versa for some other series.
In truth, people who talk about jrpg's mostly talk about a story-driven rpg (or in some cases turn-based combat mechanics and traditional leveling systems) and wrpg's as more free games with less focus on story but more about the character and freedom of choice. In such a way, using the terms jrpg / wrpg are wrong, but it's the wording that has been used now for quite some time about the two sub-genres, so it's confusing for outsiders.

Cheers. Even with the Bethesda games, despite the illusion of being able to "make your own way", you always end up at the same places fighting the same baddies, just wearing a slightly different set of armour flinging a fireball instead of swinging a sword!

I do prefer the open feel of Morrowind as opposed to kotor personally.

Nah. You could still do everything in real time if you wanted to. you didn't have to wait for one character to finish their turn before the next one could or anything.

CRPG's are closer to JRPG's in that aspect. The brilliant Divinity Original Sin 2 for example is completely turn based.

Wouldn't call the Souls games RPGs. Compared to something like Baldur's Gate, Planescape: Torment, Fallout or KotOR (it feels really odd that none of these are on the list, though as PC is entirely omitted I perhaps shouldn't be surprised), it'd be pretty odd to suggest those are RPGs. Action-adventure games with RPG elements.

How about the SaGa series? I only played the originals:

    GB
Makai Toushi SaGa (The Final Fantasy Legend)
SaGa 2 Hihō Densetsu: Goddess of Destiny (Final Fantasy Legend 2)
SaGa 3 Jikū no Hasha: Shadow or Light (Final Fantasy Legend 3)

but there are also the Romancing and Frontier games in the series too.

Yea, fair enough, wasn't sure about the criteria to be honest. Still, I think the Souls games, and the pc rpgs you lister for that matter, are excellent and should be played by anyone reading this ;)

feckin loved Baldurs Gate and Icewind Dale series. Brilliant games. Baldurs Gate 2 is probably my top rated game. I still play it now and it's like what? 20 years old?

Paths of Exile is a game i've heard good things about, never played it myself. Pillars of Eternity was a bit disappointing but in the same vein of Baldurs Gate series.

Path of Exile is very similar to Diablo. I just started playing Diablo 3 again with a few friends. Great time to play with 4 people on the same TV with a few beers :)

Anyone here play Vagrant Story for the PS1? Thought it was an excellent RPG from Square, at a time when they were churning out quality titles for fun.

Simple case of one-man updating army that has a weird sleeping pattern.
PC is up, I've also changed this around from JRPG specific to be open up to all types of RPG's, as long as the reviews help people understand what kind of games they get into, and it's a RPG, it'll be allowed.
