Pep will need another £50m defender in January or he will throw his toys out of the pram.

If he's available in January at around £52m, we should be all over it. He's arguably superior to Rose in most aspects of his game, is younger and will cost a similar amount according to reports about Rose's potential price.

Conte and Chelsea was heavily linked during the summer. But he’d be a great signing for us in a position we desperately need an upgrade in.

It's really an absolute no brainer to go for Sandro...we could also offer Darmian & Blind as incentive to Juventus.... ;)

Someone posted on another thread, United would never pay £60m for a fullback.
But I'm not sure that would be true, Mourinho is building a team of Marquee signuings, and if you pay £85m for Pogba & £75m for Lukaku, why not pay comparable sum for a marquee defender..?

The sources for this are all really shady ones. Would not trust daily mail or the express or calciomercato.

Even if it isn't true we should be prepered to pay even more than 50m for him. Fullbacks are underrated imo, and I believe Arsenal would've had more success if Wenger didn't overlook those two positions. Look how much better City is this year with a proper goalie and a right back (among other factors). Look at the foreign top sides. They all have good fullbacks.

He is not at his best these days, Asamoah benched him and Marotta said again yesterday that Juve do not force unhappy players to stay. That said, a move in January seems very unlikely to me, with a Scudetto at open play and the possible CL knockout stage after tomorrow

Our lack of proper wingers adds to that need.

That's why Young has shined so much for us.

Yeah, it’s a very important position. Look at what players like Marcelo and Dani Alves add to their sides attack.

Well, kind of. Young has been absolutely brilliant and he deserves credit for that. But obviously we lack good crossers, which is a shame when we have a player like Lukaku in the box. Right now Young is the only player who can consistently deliver good crosses. Martial seems to be improving in that aspect though, he's had some very good crosses this season. Rashford looks to be developing that too. He just needs a little more accuracy, though his technique when hitting the ball is quite brilliant.

Dani Alves was the player that had the most assists to Messi during his time there IIRC. More than Xavi and Iniesta. Marcelo is absolutely vital for Real Madrid. Even Alba for Barca is a very important player, and Guillem Balague suggested a few weeks ago that Alba could be the one adding penetration to the team when Messi was out. It's not a coincidence that all the teams who have been at the highest international level in recent years have had really good full backs.

Yep, add Bayern with Lahm and Alaba to that list as well. Moses and Alonso did really well for Chelsea last season too, iirc.

Still a valid point regardless. Though, the major emphasis was on Sandro being superior to Rose in most attributes, while reportedly costing the same.

Dunno, Alex Sandro is a quality player, obviously. But from United's standpoint, a fee in excess of £50 million doesn't come across as a particularly prudent investment when another top Serie A leftback (who's injured right now) is available in the summer for free. And unless I'm mistaken wrt. Bosman transfer rules, a pre-contract can be signed in the winter window - like Lewandowski in 2014, though Ghoulam's injury might complicate the situation a bit:

We could potentially do two of the three-ish summer signings as early as January, with both Özil and Ghoulam being available for free on pre-contracts.

I don't think English clubs can offer contracts to players based in England until they expire.
Not that it makes much of a difference. If Ozil wants here and we've made contact, it could already be sorted.

But yeah, Ghoulam on a free would be great business

Six months is everything. Six months from August perisic would be 29. That's only 2 times 6 months from being 30. At which point he might as well retire.

They really do grow up so fast these days.

Ghoulam suffered a very bad knee injury, even on a free there'd be no guarantee he'll go back to his level. See Luke Shaw for example, we can't mess around this position for any longer and need a solid no nonsense LB in the summer.

Goretzka and Ozil are also free in the summer and acquiring any of the two would be tremendous business but ask yourself when was the last time United shopped here? We'll most likely spend in excess of 100 million again to fix our problems at fullback/wide areas and ignore the bargains out there.

How incredible would it be to sign Özil, Goretzka, Sandro and Griezmann for around £150m in total. Likelihood is that we'll get none

To be honest, while it's a concern - I don't think Ghoulam's injury justifies an exponentially higher outlay on Sandro. ACL injuries used to be a big, big deal in the past with players taking a dozen months or even a couple of seasons to recover fully, if ever - and that's the one Ghoulam suffered (similar to Rojo):

But if Ghoulam's cartilage hasn't suffered significant damage, the chances for very good recovery with ACL reconstruction with him building around the hamstrings and knee and managing himself over the next 6-8 months are very good - just in time for pre-season as well, so he won't need to over-exert. Shaw has a lot of issues that extend beyond the knee damage. The likes of Totti, Xavi, Shearer, Van Nistelrooy, Del Piero, Pirès made full recoveries from similar injuries. Signing Ghoulam on a pre-contract would be a calculated move - not a pure gamble, and could turn out to be a very astute piece of business considering he's still only 26 and about to enter his prime.

Unless we wins the league sandro if he's indeed on the move will likely to choose chelsea or city.

    I wouldn't hope much.

I'd say we go for goretzka and offer 15-20m to get him in jan, unless goretzka wants to come here and sign a pre contract.

I'm more confident in getting mezut ozil because arsenal are weak with their players

Why are people mentioning City? They just spent over 50 million pounds on a left back this past summer. Granted he is injured but that doesnt mean they sign another 50 million pound replacement.

Chelsea will some how get £60m+ for Luiz off Madrid and spend £50m of that on Sandro.

    having said that though:

    ------------De Gea
    Valencia-Bailey-Jones-Sandro
    ---Pogba---Matic----Goretzka
    --------------Ozil
    -----Lukaku-----Martial

In January  ... 100% might not sign one though.

I'd prefer Ismaily, would be much cheaper and is just as good. Brazil really has a wealth of riches in the left back spot.

Chelsea would definitely be the favourites given they were so heavily linked in the summer. But if we have a chance we should grab it.

Would love it to happen but i think he is chelsea bound. Conte looks to want him desperately and Abrahmovic wants to keep conte so will give him what he wants at any cost. Lots of Left backs will be available next summer.
    Danny rose
    Sandro
Guilherme arana - Think sevillia signed him already, very highly rated in brazil.
    Ghoulam
    Jose Gaya
    Bertrand
    Tierney
    Sessegnon

Think we can have our pick and although rose and sandro are more readymade players, we could go the younger route with Gaya/Tierney.

I'm sceptical this is true, but if it is, £52m for Sandro is a no-brainer for United. A position of need and he's probably the 3rd best in the world.

He'll probably end up at Chelsea mind, if he does leave at all.
