Anyone that evades tax is a cnut in my opinion. Especially when you're making as much as elite footballers do.

Happens a lot in Spain. Is it that common in England as well?
What is it about Spain and not paying taxes?

A lot of the time, the players have no idea they're avoiding tax. They all have accountants I'm sure, who probably look to cut corners at every opportunity.

We pay him £1 million per week, so he can pay that back easily.

And then they get caught and their careers are over. Way to shift the blame.

Erm, not sure this is what the Caf meant when it said we must sign the next Messi.

It's not good but I'm afraid we've reached the point where it's not particularly bad either. It just exists as a case of affairs.

Seems to be some scheme used by all the footballers which got busted by the tax authorities these days.. I think they are just going through the list of each player on the squads and fining them..

Politicians, governments, bankers, businesses and entrepreneurs try evading them all the time. I don’t get why it’s such a big deal when athletes or everyday regular folk try doing the same by finding their own loopholes tbh.

I work in tax and while all these sportsman evading tax is an issue and the relevant penalities should be imposed (I dont know why it's always a prison sentence), it's debatable how involved these players really are in their tax return filing. We asisst a lot 9f big wigs with their own tax compliances and return filing and to a large extent they expect the 'experts' to take of everything with their role often being of holding a discussion or two, and give a go ahead/sign off. The bigger the pocket the less they are to sit and get down into the exact tax working and the components thereof.

Of course it depends from case and the lengths to which the tax payer appears have gone (creating shell companies etc)

I understand that this is happening to him and a lot other players because Spain Treasure Office made a reinterpretation of an article of the Tax law. At least that is what I read in Spanish newspapers during the Messi case.

He earns that much every minute here at United anyway, he can pay it back.

Tax workings are complicated things though. Did Sanchez sit and draft his own working? I doubt that. Did he properly review it? I don't know. If he did then he's an idiot but there's no way to tell.

There is surely something going on at Madrid and Barca. How many players are investigated and charged, and for all the players it's for the years they played in Madrid and Barcelona.

Good he's admitted it and will pay it. It's disgraceful how these elite sportsmen hoard wealth beyond what they shouldn't even have.

Ignorance is no excuse in law, however just like with every other athlete tax case I don't think he is morally guilty and it doesnt make him a bad person when his accountant cut some corners.

Not defending tax evasion (especially when you earn this amount) but is there something very wrong with the Spanish tax system or at least people's understanding of it? Ronaldo, Messi, Sanchez, Neymar - all have been in trouble + let's be honest none of them are handling their own paperwork, they're getting awful advice.

A family friend of mine lives and works in the US. He’s double majored in accounting and business management and finally works full time after having served 5 years in the marines. Anyways, he started up his own side business on top of being a players agent/representative in multiple different sports. Long story short, he made ~$275K this past year working as an agent and something like $15K in his side business. On his papers, he made it show he only made the latter and evaded what would be something like 40% or so on the 275.

Not saying it’s right or wrong but especially in the US where the top 1% wealthiest/businesses and government/politicians shaft the rest of the country by pulling this off often, I can see the viewpoint when others find and exploit these loopholes themselves. As for the athletes, I remember him saying a good chunk of them evade as well.

Maybe not evasion but I'd be surprised if they aren't all doing some sort of tax avoidance, and by they I mean their accountants/agents/manager on their behalf.

End of the day they sign the tax return and that’s a legal obligation to show that everything is correct. If their too lazy or too rich to bother looking at what’s been done in their name or even find it odd how so much tax has been saved then more fool them.
