Three errors which has already to goal in the first few months, if that's your definition of doing alright then the standards of GK are going down.

While that is nonsense, Ter Stegen is still better than Neuer and is with De Gea as the best keeper in the world. As for him not starting for Germany, I think you'l find a lot of Germany fans saying he should be the No.1 now.

De Gea and Ter Stegen are a level above the rest, I feel.

It's more like it's been months since he did anything special, so Liverpool fans didn't dump this thread.

He's been doing everything you'd want your keeper to do without drawing headlines.

Yours and KMs mission against him is as silly as the VVD one loads here attempted before it became ridiculous to persist. Without going into discussions of where he stands in rankings its clear to those who actually watch him every week that he's a top keeper.

I'm not as anti-Liverpool as the rest here but I don't see anything special in him. He is good with his feet but we've seen what his overconfidence can do, his shot stopping isn't special as well. Overconfidence doesn't only effect his ball playing but also when he comes out for balls, there was no need to come out against Lacazette and it cost them a win.

Neuer was similar during his Schalke days but he improved his decision making a lot at Bayern; his shot stopping was never in doubt though. Alisson needs to mature a bit if he wants to be considered one of the best. Nowhere near that right now.

OK, maybe I was a bit trigger happy. But I maintain it for KM, who used to be a good egg and is clearly in need of a hobby now. :p

He's made some pretty terrible errors since joining. Although this thread may not have been bumped, he's been discussed elsewhere. I think you should be expecting more from a world record signing than just staying under the radar.

Oblak may be even better than both of them. Certainly in the conversation.

I love how he comes out for balls to be honest. Yeah he got his angles wrong against lacazette, but that is well outweighed by how well he comes out in general and the fact that he's come out to intercept a number of balls he has no right to get to as a keeper already. That doesn't add to to the "tv save" catalogue of keeping excellence though.

He's a good puncher, he stops all the shots you'd want a keeper to stop, quick off his line, outstanding anticipation to snuff out dangers early, assuring presence, commanding stature and excellent on the ball. The only thing I haven't seen from him so far is making the kind of save he doesn't really have a right to save.

I think we have different definitions of terrible errors. The only terrible one he's made was getting needlessly dispossessed and costing a goal.

He's a good keeper, but he is not in the bracket of Ter Stegen, Neuer, Oblak and DDG. He simply makes too many silly mistakes for that, and he needs to prove more over time. When Liverpool fans start saying DDG isn't up there, your credibility of being sane posters just goes out the window. That Alisson doesn't rate DDG up with Ter Stegen and Oblak, when DDG actually made the World XI in 2018 makes absolutely no sense. In 2017 it was Buffon where DDG was mentioned as one of the runners up - no mention of Alisson or even Ter Stegen.

At the beginning of the season, your defense was pretty darn good, and truth be told, Alisson had to do very little shot stopping and wasn't tested much. Lately, your defense hasn't been as good, and when tested he has done some costly mistakes. One thing DDG does not get enough credit for is his consistency. He makes mistakes, but very rarely, and some of those "mistakes" are only shots that he normally would take - not many others. For instance, that long range shot against Red Star, DDG would have saved that 10/10.

I think it was a mistake. Terrible? No. I have a strong back catalogue etched into my mind of what that means from years of Karius and Mignolet.

So that's Arsenal mistake, that mistake against a random PL team whose name I completely forget where just basically passed them the ball and the mistake against RedStar.

I said he's already made three mistakes which has lead to a goal, how the feck am I running a secret group against him?

It is good to have keepers coming out and snuffing danger quickly, but you tread a very fine line when you do that. There are many keepers who try to follow that style of goalkeeping but continue to make mistakes, which prevents them from being one of the best. The reason Neuer is considered one of the greatest in history is because he managed to take a lot of risks and still avoid making errors (along with his fantastic shot stopping ability).

My point is that the peak for these type of keepers is very high and difficult to reach, so if Alisson doesn't reach near that level then it would be very frustrating for Liverpool fans. Errors will continue to come, and his shot stopping is not at the level of the best out there right now, so he needs to improve a lot.

The goal Jesus scored against us in the quarters for example - Karius doesn't get the blame for that one but it's the kind of goal I'd expect Allison to snuff out.

Have you blocked the Arsenal game from your memory?

I think you need to stop using Karius as your measuring stick for a keeper.

No more than using Karius as your measuring stick of what constitutes a good keeper. Have you blocked the Arsenal game from your mind?

Don't think he made a mistake for Lacazette's goal - in hindsight he could've done it better yes, but that's just a very good goal by a very good striker, if he doesn't do that no one would bat an eyelid about coming for the ball in that situation. He was a bit slow to react for Belgrade's second goal but hardly a shocker, and yes the one were he was dispossessed was very poor but it didn't cost us and he seems to have learned from it.

I think he's already a good goalkeeper and has the potential to grow into a great one, one of the best in the league (hardly an accomplishment at the moment though). I think he'll be a bit more settled as the season goes on and in his second season and so on. Let's not forget that DDG didn't look like the best in the world either when he arrived in England, although granted he was 5 years younger than Alisson currently is.

Besides, how much football do some on here even watch? I doubt anyone watches all of United, City, Liverpool, Bayern, Atlético and Barça regularly enough to form an opinion on who is currently the best in the world.

It was a terrible mistake. It lost you the match, 2 points down the drain. If DDG had done something similar, I would be livid. He completely mistimed the situation, and then looked as if he was completely lost as to what to do next - he just froze.

Sure, Mignolet and Karius have done worse, but c'mon, he says he is comparable to the top three goalies in the world, not clowns.

What the actual feck? It was a terrible mistake. He mistimed it. He should never have left the line for that one. You either time it so you win the ball, or you stay put in position to save a shot. It was not a good position for Lacazette to take a shot from anyhow. Terrible goalkeeping. The long range shot was just poor goalkeeping. I would expect any good goalie to save it. His positioning is just wrong as he is too far out from the line with the ball so close to the 18 yard box. That is two positonal mistakes, one bad judgement and also a lazy jump in there.

On the other hand, DDG had done more mistakes in his first season at United. Alisson will most likely improve, no doubt. To classify him above DDG at this point is just ludicrous.

Don’t forget when he came flapping for the Micky header. A better header and that’s a goal. Ref should’ve given it as a pen, too.

IIRC he also made similar mistake like Leno but Arsenal player didn't score. Maybe wrong here but remember Alisson diving to clear cross and it landed near Arsenal player in the box.

Tell Roma fans his shot stopping is average, he consistently bailed them out last season in situations he had no right to. He was outstanding by every metric across Europe. @giorno can probably attest to this.
The difference here at Liverpool is he’s never going to ever have as much to do as he would at Roma so the opportunities to make world class saves are very rare. His ability to sweep and maintain concentration over 90 minutes are what’s going to be challenged here.

Oh yeah, that's right. I forgot about that one!

He's a good goalie, and he's a great upgrade on what they had. The only reason this thread is so active now, however, is that he puts himself in the top three goalies currently, and ahead of DDG, which is complete nonsense.

People argued that Mignolet was the best PL goalie the season before he signed for Liverpool... He's good, but currently, you guys overrate him. He might become one of the best, but many argued the same about Karius who was very promising in the Bundesliga.

I think he's transformed Liverpool. He gives their defence the confidence to play, which allows the midfielders to play further up, which allows the forwards to do what they want.

Sure, if you come running out to intercept long balls etc.. you're going to make more mistakes than if you just stay on your line, but ultimately if playing on the edge leads to more individual mistakes but a better goal difference, then it's beneficial to the team..

I love Dave, but his refusal to come out and stop attacks before they begin can be really iritating. Putting a couple of footballers in front of him might make the world of difference of course..

Karius was highly rated when he went to Liverpool, and many argued he would come good. Liverpool supporters argued that he had done no worse than DDG in his first season. Concerning Mignolet, not only Liverpool supporters gave him plaudits. Erik Thorstvedt, former Tottenham goalie, argued that he was the best in the PL under Southampton - that was in 2013. Making that step up can be a real handful.

That can't be right. He was benched halfway through the season after making a heroic singlehanded effort to derail our title challenge.

Either way, I think there is a difference in scale between the "might come good" discussions of those two and "can he be/is he one of the best in the world" discussions around Alisson.

    Read this article on Karius:

"Comparisons have been drawn with Manchester United's highly-rated Spanish goalkeeper David De Gea, who also struggled to settle in England only to emerge as one of the league's and Europe's best shot-stoppers. Karius is on a similar path to stardom, at his second shot at English football."
    https://www.bundesliga.com/en/news/...bundesliga-with-mainz-klopp-tuchel-506856.jsp

There was some proper hyperbole regarding Karius.

Either way, I think only Liverpool supporters, and Alisson(!), thinks of him as one of the best in the world. The only reason we are having this discussion is that he put himself there, and you guys followed up. He has a long way to go to prove that he is ahead of DDG.
