Simple concept: Select any league you want and then pick a greatest 'other nation' xi for it.

For example: Dutch in English top division:

    -------------------------Van Nistlerooy
    Overmars------------Bergkamp----------Robben
    ---------------A.Muhren----------Gullit
    Van Bronckhorst----------------------------Reizeger
    --------------------van Dijk----------Stam
    ---------------------------Van der Sar

    Dutch in La Liga

    ------------Cruyff-------Kluivert--------Robben
    ------Seedorf-----------Cocu-------Neeskens
    Van Bronckhorst-----------------------Reizeger
    -----------------F. De Boer------Koeman
    ---------------------------Cillessen

Is there a proper home nation, or Irish, xi possible for any mainland Europen league?

The exercise can be taken to lower flights than the top leagues, too. Brazilian xi for the Championship, as an example.

I'm sure the French will have the best English top division xi by a margin; probably more a question of who can get near them.

Brazilians and Argentines in La Liga and Serie A must surely be the strongest of all. Basically a who's who for almost all positions!

Germans in Serie A. A bit of a stretch with 4-2-2-2 and Brehme on the right, and Lehmann gets in on a technicality with only 5 games for AC Milan. I think that there weren’t any German keepers there aside from him.

Incredibly weird strikerless 4-3-3 of Germans in La Liga. 8 midfielders, 2 defenders (off peak Brehme) and ter Stegen — try to get the ball from them

Yeah. Fullbacks aren’t that great but with this front line it hardly matters.

Briegel in midfield hast to be in it. He was sensational in Verona's title win in 85. Helmut Haller should be in it as well. Reuter at rightback fixes the Brehme problem. Something like the following would be my choice.

    Klinsmann Rummenigge
    Haller
    Matthäus Briegel
    Brehme Schnellinger Sammer Kohler Reuter
    Lehmann
Harsh on Häßler, Möller and a few others like Horst Szymaniak. But that's the best I could come up with so far. Maybe I remember a few more players later.

    Wilson
    Nicol - Buchan - Hansen - Robertson
    Bremner - Souness - Mackay
    James
    Law - Dalglish

Hell of a midfield and attacking spine. Most of the team picks itself, but in terms of the lesser known:
    • Bob Wilson gets in ahead of Jim Leighton based on his long service of over 300 games at Highbury and as a key part of the famous Arsenal double-winning side in 1970/71 when he won the club's player of the year.
    • Stevie Nicol won English PFA Player of the Year from right-back for Liverpool, which may well be unprecedented for a full-back.
    • Could select Billy Liddell to inject some width, he was pretty much the Gareth Bale of his day by all accounts.
Compare that to a post-92 team:

    Gordon
    Hutton - Gough - Hendry - Robertson
    B Ferguson - McCallister - Fletcher
    Gallacher - D Ferguson - Collins

    For the team coming north:

    Woods
    Stevens - Elliott - Butcher - Ball
    Steven - Gascoigne - Roberts - Walters
    Hateley - Sutton

A bit agricultural but enough craft in the midfield.

Yeah, I picked him originally next to Matthäus but shamelessly opted for a bigger name. Your team is more realistic. Haller is a good shout, it's just that I know him mostly from the World Cup. He seems like one of the most successful Germans in Italy — usually they don't stay long.

La Liga is doable but it won't be interesting. Our best football came when players weren't allowed to move abroad (at least in their peak years). There were only a few notable players with good careers in Spain after that — Mostovoi, Karpin, Onopko.

In England it was Kanchelskis, Smertin + the stars of Euro 2008: Arshavin, Pavlychenko, Bilyaletdinov, Zhirkov, neither of whom were really successful. Maybe Arshavin, he was very good in his first seasons, but gave up too early.

Englishmen in Serie A? Italian managers seem to have a boner for English central midfielders.

    Hart
    Elliot - Walker - Cole
    Beckham - Ince - Cowans - Francis
    Platt - Gascoigne
    Greaves

Cheating with Trevor's position somewhat, as well as the duds at the base of the team.

Not a bad team from the Ivory Coast. 6 ft 8 inch Traoré would be their emergency goalkeeper, as they don't have any.

Should probably alter the formation so one of Zaha, Okocha or Mané replaces Babayaro tbh.

I would remove Di Maria, and pick Maradona, Messi and Di Stefano behind the striker: Mario Alberto Kempes.

Heinze was very good at Manchester United but not so good in Spain. Arruabarrena who played at Villarreal is a much better choice.

Other suggestions (which I admittedly saw somewhere else in Internet) are Pochettino for CB, Scaloni for RB, Carlos Roa for GK, and Simeone (instead of Mascherano) as CM.

I opted for Di Maria instead of Kempes because he fitted better in that already unbalanced trio. His late Madrid version especially. Kempes will be running into the same overloaded space. I'm open to fullback suggestions — I've missed Sorin and I'm not really impressed by other options.

I'm not the biggest fan of Simeone, to be honest, I always thought that it was goals that made him a special players and we certainly don't need any more of those with that attacking unit. The additional defensive stability that Mascherano provides is very much welcome — but there is an argument that he mostly played at CB for Barcelona.
