Marca reported he might face 2 years prison time and 6 years ban from football for the match fixing case.

Not sure what the case is about, Herrera was Zaragoza player and the alleged objective is keep Zaragoza in La Liga.

Maybe it's just Marca hyping it.

It's a difficult one. It is almost certain that the match fixing took place. What's harder to prove is the role of individual Zaragoza players in it. The Judge in the original hearing (which was about establishing the facts of the case and who could be charged with what) came up with an inconclusive report and left the file open but inactive.

La Liga, Deportivo and the prosecution appealed. Their view is that the Levante players and the whole Zaragoza group (players, coaches, admin staff) knew about the fix even if they didn't know the details of the mechanics. That mass prosecution now has the go ahead, the trial is set to start in about 6 months.

Herrera (like several other Zaragoza players) got a payment of 90k in his bank account from the club which he then took out in cash and handed back to the club. It's then thought one of the management arranged for that money to get to the Levante players.

What Herrera did that was different to the other players was he had the cash formally recorded by the bank as him returning a payment from the club that had been made in error. He also took the money to the club offices and got a receipt. The other players handed over the cash in cafes etc.

On the sentencing if he was found guilty. If it was two years, it would be converted to a suspended sentence. The six year football ban is the big thing of course - but the reality is that a lot of the players have now retired (the match was in 2011) and others like Gabi may have done by the time the case is resolved. Herrera may be the only player really affected if he is found guilty.

Thank you for the detailed reply. So if Herrera did return the payment to the club saying he got money by error and got the receipt then he has got a leg to stand surely?

So what's Herrera supposed to have done wrong here? Failed to report to the police?

Be a bit harsh considering those tax cheats Neymar & Messi, who are far worse, got off with a slap on the wrist. Then, Herrara is only small fry compared to them, & probably be made an example of.

Very true but if he did partake in match fixing then he should be punished to the full extent of the rules. Tax is one thing (especially image rights) but match fixing cannot be tolerated.

Is he already serving his sentence? That would explain why he's gone missing throughout this season
