What sort of a question is that to ask?

It wasn't criticism?? A light-hearted quip you say?

“Can you believe that? A female linesman. Women don’t know the offside rule,”

    Right...

As an aside, I really dislike the word "banter" ...

His only wrong is that he said it at work, and therefore his dismissal was fair enough.

But on what he actually said? Please. Look at the general and say we're not all sexist bastards

It was pure cringe. Graeme Souness went further up in my estimation because of the whole debacle (always liked his analysis anyway, but that look).

I'm guessing the interviewer already knew what his answer would be, probably from talking before the interview itself.

I think sky wanted an excuse without a massive pay off and then this fell into their hands, I'd have thought if Neville or Redknapp did the same on Saturday they would get away with it.

There was no way it was just banter. If you listen to the tone when he was speaking to Keys about Sian he was being very sarcastic and dead serious.

So do I. It's overused as an excuse when someone's said something they know they shouldn't have said.

In this case in any way, it wasn't banter, they both meant what they said.

Having said that though, it was all blown out of proportion and an apology would have been enough really. I don't actually think what they said was enough for them to get sacked.

If you like 'banter', you are an idiot – Telegraph Blogs

    That's a fantastic blog!

Banter is not humour; banter is what people have when they lack a sense of humour.

Banter is cruelty unleavened by wit but which is excused because it is a bit like wit, if you look at it from a certain angle.

Banter is what is left when humour has died, and just the rotting, stinking carcass remains, bearing a resemblance to the living being but lacking all that made it good.

    Absolutely 100% spot on!

Reading between the lines, I think Sky Sports wanted them both gone...funny how both incidents that finished Gray were both "off air" recordings, so someone at Sky Sports would have released them to the public domain - and i don't see both being done so by accident. Also, Karen Brady made sure she gave them both barrels when she called up to complain about what they'd said about her.....

    Has anybody missed them ?

They both did sterling service, no doubt about it but I felt Gray was getting a bit stale and their matches needed a new 'expert' face, and Keys had started winding me up , to be honest.

I bet almost everyone on here has said worse things and heard worse things in the work place on a regular basis, I know from working in call centres the kind of shit that gets said when the hold or the mute button has been pressed, I think it was nothing more than a stitch up from sky to get him out of his contract that these videos suddenly started been released over what was nothing incidents really.

Maybe. But it's commonplace. If that's sexist, like I said, color 95% of all guys sexist.

By 'both meant what they said', are you saying that they both truly believe that women don't know the offside rule? I'm sorry but I can't believe two football presenters are completely unaware of the existence of women's football. You're saying they just play by their own rules in their game because of course, women don't understand the offside rule? For me, at worst it's a grossly inappropriate joke.

The thing he said to Charlotte Jackson though, my god what a joke that was. If she'd have smiled after he said that, instantly there's no case, because she took it as what it was. It only becomes an issue when the person it's said to takes offence to it.

Then of course, Richard Keys' 'you smashed it'. Well that was just something else wasn't it. I'm still not 100% sure which was the problem word - 'smashed' or 'it'. 'Smashed' as we all know has become a slang term for 'had sex with' much like 'hit' and 'tapped'. Silly words, yes, but that's what slang is. Then there's 'it'. Naughty Mr Keys referring to women as 'it', because he doesn't see them as human beings, but sex objects. If anything, 'smashed her' sounds worse. Complete nonsense.

As people have said, the worst thing they did was make these jokes in the workplace.

If it had been a black linesman and Andy Grey and Richard Keys had said "How ridiculous, black people don't know the offside rule!" would you still regard it as a 'nothing' incident?

They are entitled to their opinions, obviously someone at Sky wanted rid of them hence the release of the recordings. They got too comfortable in their workplace and over stepped the mark.

So it's fine to be sexist, so long as you're not sexist at work?

OK. Is it also fine to be racist, so long as you're not racist on a train?

And, yes, it is offensive to refer to a person as 'it'. By nature, that's an insult. Unless you'd be perfectly fine with someone calling your sister/mother/daughter 'it'?

The way I've always looked at this is, regardless of whether it's jokes or not or whatever... if, at work, I questioned a collegues ability to do their job correctly because of the fact that they are a woman, and I did it behind their back, and I got caught doing it... I imagine I would probably get fired, or at the very least heavily repromanded.

And that would make me a saaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaad Panda.

There's a difference and I think you're aware of that. Women haven't been suppressed the world over for centuries in the way black people were. Sexism isn't nearly as big a problem as racism.

How many jokes and groups do you see on facebook about women being in the kitchen or making sandwiches? As I've said, it only becomes an issue when the person it's directed at takes offence to it. Fortunately the majority of women are aware that it's no more than a joke, and treat it as such.

Look up the phrase 'Smashed it' on the urban dictionary (hardly the strongest source, admittedly, but it gives our society's definition of it). My brother often refers to me as 'it' and I don't give it a second's thought.

And no, it's not alright to be sexist, but the difference is, you're expected to conduct yourself professionally at work. In the same way you can't go around calling your colleagues pricks in the workplace, regardless of the fact that you're not being serious, and everyone else knows it. When you're at the pub, call them what you want.

My dad worked with a white guy and a pakistani a while ago, and they always called each other the same, offensive nicknames, which I'll leave away from here, and they knew it was a joke, until one day a manager overheard it, and called one of them into the office to give them a formal warning. How can you seriously think how you behave in the workplace is the same as in the 'real world'?
