So I've had a bit to drink today and I'm now waiting at a bus stop in Spain with free wi-fi so this might not make any sense.

But does anyone else feel a bit out of it when it comes to United.

Don't get me wrong. I love the club and all it stands for. But the United I have known for so long is gone. Gone are the class of 92. Giggs was the last remaining link to my childhood club. He was quickly disregarded as he probably wouldn't have been successful.

But the way LVG was dismissed after winning a trophy really angers me. One of our own scored a cracking cup final goal to win the FA cup and within 24 hours the manager had gone and we'd brought in another.

Gone are the days we had long standing players who loved United. I'm not even talking about a Giggs or a Scholes but someone like Rafael or Evra. Someone who you can get behind because they "get" us.

Another thing is the youth. I just don't see them progressing under Mourinho. Players like CBJ, TFM and Rashford really excite me and I want them to get a chance but I don't know. The fact Mourinho didn't go and watch the reserves the other day isn't inspiring.

Same with Mourinho. I know it's simplistic but in my head he's not one of "us". I associate him with one of our rivals. He'd have to be here five or so years (unlikely) before he was known more as our manager than Chelsea's. For years (along with others) I've hated him. Seems galling to accept him now.

And our transfer dealings are somewhat out of the norm. Giving a rumoured 20 million to an agent? Being part of a club who gives more money to them than any other club in England? Why. It feels cheap. Paying world record fees is a bit... Crap. If Pogba succeeds, great, he's the world's most expensive player. If he flops then it's even more annoyinng that so much is spent on a waste of space.

Basically I'm worried about our lack of "United." I come on here and see fans slating Lingard and other home grown players. Mourinho one of the biggest enemies of the club in recent years now runs us. We are outspending all of our rivals (which is a bit annoying). The youth is disappearing (only rumours)

Is this the price of modern football? Am I just an idealistic knob?

I'm pretty sure this thread is made every time we sign a new player or spend a lot of money.

It looks like we've become a very fragile bunch since Fergie left.

If you are, then so am I. Agree with the OP entirely.

I grew up loving United because of the romance of British youth products taking on the world, sure we spent money too, but it wasn't the same; we've lamented the likes of City and Chelsea for 'buying' the league with mercenary dream teams, but that's basically what we're resorting to. I'm actually gutted we're signing Pogba, not because I don't want him here but because of the £100m; it just doesn't feel like the United of old at all.

Yes but, only because four the fourth summer in a row I have no idea what the core of the squad will be. During Ferguson's years we had a good idea who the core of the squad and the new signings would fill possible holes. Since Ferguson has left it has felt like a completely different squad every season.

No football=disconnection. When we are at the 85th minute losing to Stoke away with 1:0, ask the same question.

So unlike twigg to take the part of 'holier than thou' United fan.

Here's a tip, get over yourself.

Shit moves on, football changes. Memories will always remain, get on with it.

You'll stop caring once we've won the league. Barca were the team that had Unicef on their shirts and almost all their stars came from their youth. Look at them now. It happens to all teams, it's an inevitability. Let's just enjoy the fact that we can at least take advantage of it and bring in top players

Yes! Exactly. Seems that there is no long term plan. Youth players are discarded, players with big names come in and let us down more than the youth would have! (Falcao and BS)

If we were cruising at the top of the league then you'd stop with these feelings and relate to the old United again. Rashford, Lingard, Fosu, Pogba ;) - these players are our youth players and it's more than the average Premier League squad has.

Yes and No. We were spoilt rotten under Fergie and while the landscape of football changed dramatically, he gave us consistency and a link to how things were.

Those days are gone now and as a club we are learning to adapt to this new landscape and impose ourselves on it once more.

So yes, a lot has changed but that's life and I think we are best embracing it as fans rather than talk whistfully of the good old days. 26 years of that attitude has got Liverpool nowhere. I don't want us to do the same. That's why I'm pro-Woodward. He's a progressive thinker who isn't afraid of speculating to accumulate.

I understand where you're coming from, but I just know that the next time I see Shaw or Valencia sprinting as fast as they can from the back, Herrera sliding accross and jumping right back up from the tackle and into the next one, Rooney sprinting back to his own goal line in the 88th minute when we're 2-0 up already, and us scoring a last minute winner, I'll feel completely and utterly in love again.

That's pretty obvious from the fact that all you have to do with free Spanish bus stop Wifi is post on the Caff.
You know some blokes go out with girls, get jobs etc, just to pass the time when there's no football like.

Bebe was one of the sketchiest transfers in modern times and Ferguson loved nothing more than splashing cash if and when the board would allow him. He'd fecking love Woodward and our current financial position.

You know what you're right, there are still moments you live for. Rooney in the FA cup sprinting back is one. Young at 1-0 up against Stoke clearing off the line is another.

We didn't operate like other clubs because we could rely on a genius like no other to keep us at the top. We no longer have that and I doubt anyone else ever will have the likes of it again. We are having to adapt and it's never going to be an easy process. The old world is gone and we are trying to climb our way to the top of the new one.

Why would you complain about us out spending our rivals when it's money the club has earned? Would you rather see it go to the glazers?

We are more of a circus since fergie left, and the club doesn't have a recognisable DNA now. The real DNA is the fans though, and if the club chooses to ignore us the long term effects in the UK fan base will be tangible, overseas I'm not so sure.

With the amount of shite you've spouted over Mou's appointment and the way you defended LVG I'd say you're pretty disconnected from reality.

SAFs gone and it had been 3yrs. We are just like any other big name club now. People need to get used to this asap for their own good. Claiming to be "better" than other top clubs is just as ridiculous as the "me que end club" blah it Barca peddle.

All this talk of not paying agent fee, not spending big bucks, sticking to youth, sticking with the manager etc etc etc just doesn't cut it in today's times with the absolutely insane amount of money in the game and with the ridiculously competitive nature of the league. Unless you're happy fighting for the CL places every year, you either move with the times or clone Sir Alex. Only 1 of these options is possible unfortunately.

Not at all. I couldn't give a shite about pre-season, and I don't consider myself the kind of fan who has to know absolutely everything that's going on. I think you're more likely to feel the way the OP does if you do either of those two things.

What's with this notion that football clubs must adhere to a specific moral code? It's a load of romanticist bullshit really that just makes fans feel that their club is supposedly superior to others, really if we boil it down there's nothing United are doing now that they haven't done before. And really when it comes down to it all, do fans really care as long as they are entertained by on pitch activities?

You either get with the times or you get left behind. The influx of oligarchs and sheikhs upset the whole balance of the football world and has forced us to act. We still are more real than the other big spenders though, since we actually have to earn the money first, not just suck on sugardaddys titties.

This houlier than thou notion some of our fans have needs to stop. Leave that to the odious and precious "mes que un club" cnuts at Barca.
