The mixed state of our back four has really cost us this season. One area where I really felt we were strong has conspired to haunt us.

Firmly believe you don't win anything without a settled centre half pairing and to be honest we've been pretty unlucky in that area. Rojo coming back from a major injury has been forced straight back in due to the circumstances and Jones and Smalling still continue to struggle to consistently keep fit. What's cost us the most though is Bailly injury and Lindleof not settling quickly.

Well yes. We need to sell some of them and have 3 CBs constantly playing and playing on a good level to form a proper base with De Gea and a new fullback

Lindelof has been decent though and has looked to have been settling in. He should have played today.

Jones and Rojo are just two headless chickens. The first goal could have been avoided if both didn’t come rushing out.

Bailly is a big miss. But it is worrying how we starting to concede so many sloppy goals. We awful defending crosses if Smalling or Fellaini aren’t there.

So who goes and who do you build the team around?

I don't know if you have watched Man Utd's matches but Lindelöf is an obvious starter. He has been the best centre back in most matches he's played this season. Rojo have been the worst centre back and clearly shouldn't have started today.

I said he made a slow start, not that he's shit. His slow start cost us some big points.

We've been defensively awful since Rojo returned and have conceded several goals since (not all necessarily his fault) but it's worrying. 2 against Watford, 1 against Arsenal, 1 against City, 2 against Bristol, and 2 more today - all conceded with him on the pitch. We've been leaky since he returned, that's for sure. I think it points to lack of consistency in our pairings. We started with Jones and Bailly, then Smalling and Bailly, Smalling and Jones, Smalling and Lindelof, and then Smalling and Rojo.

Herrera and Rojo's drop in form this season has been a concern.

To me it's fairly simple. Bailly is easily our best defender. Big miss.

We've had injury issues for years. Most teams not being Chelsea face these issues. It's part of the game.

Chelsea now have a better defensive record than us. We have gone from having the best defence in the league to the third best. Our league position will follow a similar path if we're not careful.

Bailly and Jones should be the first choice pairing once Eric's fit.

I think this centre back pair issue is the root of our problems.

Rojo shouldn’t even be playing. He needs to go back to the reserves and when he’s actually consistent then put him in the first team. Not sure why we needed to rush him.

I rather start Blind as centre back.

We've spent a fair amount on defence but don't look like having a leader there still. Bailly and Lindelof look like they will complement each other very well if they both reach their potential. Trouble is, neither looks a natural leader/organiser.

now we see the defence quaking in their boots any time a cross comes in from a set-piece. we lack a leader in there as well. and we must have the tallest team, yet we are getting bullied at defending crosses.

He cost three points in his debut against Huddersfield, that's all. He didn't even start that match. The loss against Man City and draw against Leicester was hardly his fault, quite the contrary he was good in those matches.

Said it when rojo returned he is a liability who needs to be replaced by better player. Lindelof needs to get a sustained run in the team at least until Bailly returns he hasn't been great but you clearly see potential there and with a bit of confidence he will come good.

Bailly’s injury did us in. He’s the most aggressive and the defender with the most composure in our defence.

I think we first need to decide on a formation. This constant switching between 4 at the back to 5 is not helping anyone. Just pick a formation and stick with it whether home or away. At least everyone gets accustomed to each other - the defenders with the keeper and vice versa.

I am in for getting more quality defenders, but can't see us selling. As history speak, even our so called healthy CB purchase ended up being injury prone.

Can't keep saying it's bad luck. We go through this every season with Jones and Smalling.

Even before that, Rio, Vidic, Brown, Rafael, Neville, Heinze... something is very wrong when it comes to our defenders considering these injuries. Never feel like we have enough cover when it comes to defense despite number says other wise.

Rojo, Jones and Smalling aren't good enough. Bailly is first choice when fit and it's too early to judge Lindelof. He needs to have a run of games now. I'm sick and tired of Smalling and Jones now. You need continuity at the back and any team who wants to win the league must have a clear first choice defensive line up. Those two have been here for about 6 to 7 years now and we are still waiting for them to become clear first choices. What's the point? Time to get rid and buy a proper leader at the back.

Ey??? How does the slight issue with our centre backs explain the complete lack of creativeness, desire, confidence and the ability to consistently stick the fecking ball in the net in the final third?

The problem comes from all positions admittedly, but it’s so clear that our biggest problem is we lack quality in the final third, especially on the wings with out crosses, nice passes and finishing. Having a proper winger or someone like De Bruyne or Eriksen would do wonders for us.

Not really a surprise, he's garbage, he's poor positionally and ends up giving his defensive partner too much work to do. He's rash in challenges, gives away free kicks in dangerous areas on a regular basis and is terrible on one v ones. That 6 game spell he had last season was probably the worse thing that could have happened because it bought Mourinho's trust and brought him another year at United. But its simple really, if players like Marcos Rojo continue to play for Man United, Man United wont be successful.

Rojo had a very good run of form before his injury but it should be remembered that he should've been sent off twice during that. He's still very unconvincing.

Some will have you believe it's not a position of concern.
