This is going to be so exciting as we never know who is going to win it until the very end...

I mean every year the 3rd place winner will be totally different from the year before

Wish we'd have bought Harry Kane a year or so ago when we were linked with him. He could definitely be a contender in the next few years if he keeps this sort of scoring going.

What is the point of revealing them separately? Cringe

No way that Ronaldo doesn't win.

Deserved? Well let's say he actually played really good in the KO stages this time... wasn't too thrilled in '16.

I have to admit, I did think after his first season he may have been but certainly don't think that's the case anymore.

Also agree with revealing them separately. Pathetic.

Be funny if Ronaldo ends up with more of these than Messi.

Messi should get this. It should be how good they played not what they won. Messi has been insanely good this season. August to October should be factored in to this award. Messi has been on a completely different level to anyone. 14 goals and 2 assists in 11 games. 2 hatricks already.

Good shout to that. But on the other hand Messi and his Barca/Argentina side had a disappointing CL run, loss the league and on verge of going out of the WC in qualifiers. Other than those important/crucial matches, he has been brilliant all year though.

10 goals from the CL 1/4 finals onwards against teams like Bayern Munich, Atletico Madrid and Juventus is why Ronaldo is winning it ahead of Messi.

Fair enough, in my opinion. It's those kinds of games that separate the best from the rest.

Barca have practically been a one-man team so far this year, but smashing up Eibar and Espanyol isn't going to outweigh what Ronny did when it mattered last season.

Would be the biggest joke in football history.......

Ronaldo was garbage last year, APART FROM the red hot form when it mattered most. That said does 2 months of great form make you the bpitw? no, imo.

Insane that Coutinho has been nominated. Eriksen has been better and I doubt he'll be nominated. Not bothering mentioning De Bruyne as he'll obviously be in the 30.

"Garbage" was a strong word, but to your question - last year form (2016) has nothing to do with Ballon D'or in 2017.

Do you truly believe they base it on calendar year rather than seasons? They even have the voting well before the year ends, for starters.

People are often so smart about this being given for a calendar year because it's in the name of the award. It's just simplification, what it really is is a award based largely on 2016-17 season but not called "Ballon d'Or 2016-17" for obvious reasons.

CR7 to win it again for sure, as he won the double in 2017.

Is it so? I remembered Ronaldo nailed it once in the past mainly because of his heroic performance and hattrick in crucial WC qualifier playoff match against Sweden near end of year, and before that match it was pretty even between him and Messi, no?

Anyway, performances on 2nd half of the season (period when it matter most) always have bigger impact on people mind when voting in these awards.

I think there are one off cases like the one above where someone does something amazing just before the voting takes place which skews it but other than that it's almost always based on the season that ends in May plus major international competition if that's in the year.

Firstly, Ronaldo was far from "garbage" most of the year, he was still basically better than everyone in the world except one.

Also, these are ALWAYS decided on the highlight of the year, the World Cup, the CL latter stages, etc. Did Cannavaro or Kaka do very well the whole year when they won it?

Coutinho is a joke nomination, surely? He's an excellent player but he didn't have a great last year.

It is daft when Isco and Eriksen have done better and there's a chance Isco will be nominated but unlikely Eriksen will be.

Nominees list should be shortened to 5, there's no point having the likes of Coutinho and Dzeko on the list.

Please. This is an individual price and yet it's result is almost 100% based on the success of his entire club or nationality team.

They should give it an entire Club if the trophy's matter so much. Why should 1 player be awarded for the records/success that his Club had.

    so broken - so negligible

I mean, that’s the overarching problem isn’t it — as much as individuals can dictate a game, football is a team sport.
