This argument is weird. Earlier, it was Ronaldo only performs against the weak teams, so he doesn't deserve to win the award. Now it has turned to the exact opposite "He performs only when it matters". Now how is that a bad thing. He basically won Madrid the CL with his performances in the knockout stage. Ronaldo has started off this year slow with his ban and all. But he has again delivered in the CL against Dortmund. He scored over 40 goals last season despite playing well for "only two months".

I would argue that it's worth more than being incredible when it doesn't really count for anything. You don't win anything until April/May.

Bookmakers pricing in 95% for Ronaldo. Pretty much done.

If anything, Modric should be ranked just after Ronaldo, Messi and Neymar. Absolutely world class.

Imagine playing well for 2 months and having 50 goals.

Would love to see that happen! If Ronaldo wins it this year, they are level on 5 each, right? I can see Ronaldo at the max winning one more Ballon D'or if Madrid win the CL again. Messi is still in it for atleast 2-3 years more. It will be interesting to see how it goes.

I might have a cheeky punt on Neymar; he's the current golden boy of Europe and we all know money talks.

Furthermore it'd be a great marketing coup for PSG, so no doubt Qatar will be doing all it can to (cough) lubricate proceedings.

France Football are only revealing 5 nominees at a time. Milking it for all it's worth.

    Correct :)

I appreciate that nominations for these types of awards carry a certain amount of prestige in of themselves but is there any need for 30 when we know the award is between a handful of candidates at most?

    Whole thing is pointless imo.

It's a team game and always will be.

SPOTY is also pointless these days - jam in whoever suits the agendas at the time and ignore the grass root sports in favour of rubbish like equestrian. I refuse to watch it.

The opinion is irrelevant though. Ronaldo basically fired Real to a league and CL double - of course he's going to be the front runner for the Ballon d'Or.

Just because it's not for you doesn't make it rubbish

Rugby is just a load of posh blokes fighting, isn't it?

The only sport which is fully inclusive at all levels is cricket, everything else is rubbish!

    etc, etc ;)

    Ronaldo's and rightly so.

5 Ballon D'or awards each for him and Messi. Surely that cements the top 2 club players of all time? Can't see it being matched again imo.

    Also Countinho

This will be the last year where Cristiano and Messi are the top 2 and this is most likely the last one for Cristiano. Fully deserves it too.

3rd place is the interesting one. If Croatia miss out on the World Cup I think Neymar will take it, otherwise it will be Modric.

Hopefully the last one for both of them. It would be poetic if they ended up tied 5-5.

I am quite confident it could and will be matched. Records are meant to be broken and the future is so vast. Another 50 years, 100, 200?? They have both dominated for a decade so far but they had each other to contend with being in exactly the same generation otherwise it would have been far more than 5. All it will take is another exceptional talent with no peer for several years which I really don't see why it wont happen at some point in the future.

I think we only need 5 or maybe max 10 nominations. 30 is really unnecessary and kind of pointless.

I wish they have a top 10 list only instead of listing some twenty or thirty players who never have a chance to win. It will make the award more prestigious too.

To maintain such high consistency (top 2 contender in the world) for over 10 years is very very rare in football history. It might happen in future who knows, but I think it will be very rare case.

This might be an unpopular opinion here, but I don't think De Gea has done much to deserve a nomination. He's been good when called upon but hasn't had much to do.

    And lol, Dzeko?

Yeah. That could save Man Utd some money too. IIRC we'll have to pay another €10m for Martial if he's listed for the Ballon d'Or nomination.

Think this will be Ronaldo’s last and its fully deserved, no one has ever performed as well in the CL knockout as he did last season - he was also their top scorer in the league (which they won), scored a hat trick in the CWC final and has been brilliant for Portugal.

I predict Messi will win 6-5 on Ballon Dors, and that will be a fair reflection on their dominance and rivalry over the years.

It is probably because he scored 39 goals last year in all comps for Roma which is pretty impressive for a team like Roma, also broke Tottis record for most goals in one season

So who's going to be better than both Messi & Ronaldo from 2019 onwards?

It's a 30-player shortlist, so there are still 15 names to be revealed. I hope Pogba will be one of them.

Dzeko got 39 goals last season. Pretty deserved. Mertens has also turned into a brilliant striker and has a great scoring record.

Why bother ?? Messi and Ronnie have this in the bag every year since 2008... You could score 100 goals in Seria A and still not win it..
