Still they deserve nomination for having such a great year. Coutinho's nomination is a joke though.

Its happened twice in just the last 10 years and you reckon given centuries we cannot see it again? Besides we don't necessarily need 10 years. All it will take is to get one exceptional player. Of course they are rare but they come up from time to time. We are always quick to jump on the fact that records can never be broken because they look impressive. They usually are at some point.

I think he will struggle to get into top 5, although he deserves it.

Neymar and someone from Juventus (Buffon/Dybala) will be ahead of him certainly imo, probably even Hazard. Also, the votes for other Real players will split between him, Ramos, Marcelo, and Kroos which is often the case when you have such a great team.

Coutinho, Oblak, Mertens and Dzeko have no business being next or near such a list. Dybala is a huge talent but I don't think he's done enough yet either.

Ronaldo. Comfortably deserves it again this year.

Its an accomplishment getting nominated too you know. Its not just win it or nothing for everyone. Just like some teams feel proud for finishing in the top half of the league. Not everyone is there to win everything.

If Madrid 3-peat the CL that's that, a CL 3-peat is the bigger story even if Messi wins the world cup.

I'm kind of hoping Jose stops the 3-peat, as unlikely as that maybe.

Those 2 have taken the game to a completely different level. Most player who score 40 goals a season used to be considered one of the best in the world or having the season of their life. With them scoring 40+ is considered "garbage" for most of the year.

France Football made the alternative voting for the earlier years that included non-Europeans, Pele ended up with 7 Ballon D'Ors. So no. Also, Di Stefano is still ahead of both in terms of CLs, and is, probably, the best club footballer ever (sadly his international career wasn't that good).

This 'scheduling 6 different times during a day on which 5 of the 30 candidates nominated for Ballon D'Or will be revealed via social media' thing is the most stupid fecking thing I've ever seen. I mean who gives a feck. Tell us the names and be done with it.

To give a better perspective, it happened only twice in the history of Ballon D'or though.

Griezmann, Kroos, Buffon, Mané and Falcao are the next five.

    10 left.

I think once they both decline and retire it’ll return to how it was pre-2008 where the winner changes most years. The gap between the best and the rest wont be so vast so I’d be surprised if one or two players dominate it for the next decade.

These are two players that are in amongst the greatest ever. As good as Neymar, Mbappe etc are it’s very unlikely they will be compared to Messi and Ronaldo once all their careers are over.

From the names called so far, 8 weren't nominated for FIFA's award. 10 names left to go.

Having 2 players from a team that finished 4th is laughable. DDG doesn't deserve to be on there this year, he's still unquestionably one of the best keepers in the world but he had barely anything to do. Nice to see Kane get some recognition although he won't win it.

Top 3 I think will be; Ronaldo, Messi and Neymar.

Hopefully yes, some form of "normality" needs to go back in football. Players won't be judged by ridiculous number of goals anymore etc etc.

You might want to take a look at one Muller, Gerd. Or Pelé. Or Eusebio

Fun fact: Gerd Muller was never, at any point in his career, considered the best player in the world. Neither was Eusebio. Pelé is one of the reasons for that. Cruyff is the other

It's a decent movie. Will Ferrell is great. Absolutely shit conclusion to take from the movie though.

Eusébio was definitely considered the best in the World multiple times in his career. 1965 and 1966 for sure. I'd love to see how Eusébio and Pelé would be remembered if they had switched clubs and national teams.

Pele pretty much dominates it since 1958 to 1964 (apart from 1962 - the winner is, obviously, Garrincha) + 1970. I'm on the phone now, but I think even on Ballon d'Or's wiki page there is a section dedicated to it.

A World Cup is won every 4 years, a CL repeat had never been done until this year, a CL 3-peat is much much bigger than a WC.

Even if you include the EC old format, when was the last time it was done? the 70s?
