Do you know if the journos would have voted for Neuer in 2014 if it weren't for the merger? I only know the overall results, and Ronaldo won by quite a large margin.

Because it was the FIFA award, which is politics and popularity as much as anything else. Had the BoD remained independent of FIFA in those years, both Messi and Cristiano would have 1 BoD less each. Ribery would have won in 2013, while i don't remember who it was in 2010(sneijder, xavi or iniesta)

IIRC no, they went Cristiano. They went Ribery in 2013

I'm not sure how things would have gone but I know it would have been a lot closer for sure had it been the journalists' vote. Cristiano isn't at his 2014 level anymore so his performances week in week out won't make up for the lack of great team results. He can't be brilliant every week anymore so he'd have to decide the big games in the Champions League and World Cup to have a chance along with his team progressing to the final/semis in both tournaments. Then he'd have to hope Messi or Neymar wouldn't be able to do even better. It's possible but it's pretty unlikely he'll win another Ballon D'Or imo.

It's not due to politics or popularity imo. The journalists just take trophies won more into consideration

Its unlikely he will win it again, but then I have been hearing many people saying he's already done 2 years ago too.

It's really both. It's also a disconnect in the meaning of the award. If you're voting for the best player in the world, Messi should have won the last 10 straight. If you're voting for the best in terms of who played the best over the course of the year/season, then of course trophies should count for a lot. Being great in a great team that won stuff is much bigger than being great on a team that won nothing

We can agree on this instantly, that's the reason I started my reply with 'many ifs involved'. The reason I think it's possible at all is that his current role is practically taylor-made for him to decide big games.
While in many ways this is true, I am actually more convinced of the current version of Ronaldo (see above), as strange as it may sound. To me, the end of last season was the greatest thing he has ever done, and that's just a few months away by now. Likewise, his 2016 tournament was very good individually. I don't think both happening just recently is a coincidence. So if Real wins the third CL in a row, Portugal has a surprise WC performance, and he continues his CL & NT form in crunch time, there may be a chance for him. Again: that's a lot of ifs, I know. But in my opinion he can do it.

How was his 2016 tournament good individually? He had one great game, one game where he played rather badly but came up with a huge goal, one game where he lasted 10 minutes, and 4 others where he stunk up the place. Seriously for all of his heroics against hungary, the only reason portugal where in that situation in the first place was because of how dire he'd been in the first two games. If he has two average games, he scores 5 goals between iceland and austria, and a couple more against poland. The sheer number of gilded chances he missed in that tournament was crazy

Hazard has done nothing this year yet. Matic should be there before Kante.

It isn't really idiotic to think that Lionel Messi has been the best footballer player in the world for the past 10 years.

In fact, it's idiotic to call it idiotic.

The Women's nominee's outside of Martens are a joke. One of the players isn't even a professional.

These things are always cringe worthy. Talking about sexism, they have that girl to act like some whore on the street, pretty embarassing stuff.

Unfortunately my friend, Ronaldo does exist and he has been better in some of those seasons/years.
In fact, the current Ballon Dor isn't even Messi.
I realise that there are some fanboys (I'm sure some would say Martial is the true best player in the World), but in the real World, Ronaldo and Messi are both "up there". I would say that Ronaldo is the better player, simply because he has won a big trophy with Portugal. He has won the CL heaps of times. He has performed to a high level in England. Basically, wherever you put Ronaldo, whichever team you put him in, he performs. Messi on the other hand has only ever done well in Spain, in a team which some said was the best ever.

In summary, if I had to choose a "best player in the last 10 years", it would be Ronaldo...not Messi.

Feel bad for Deyna, she's absolutely class and will 100% be one of the best women to play the game ever but she shouldn't be nominated. It isn't her fault though. All the US pros claiming they have never heard of her are speaking absolute nonsense though, shes the best prospect in the game by a country mile, be amazed if any of them haven't seen her play. She's got the best strike I've ever seen of any Womens footballer.

With regards to her being professional, she could play in Europe professionally if she wanted to but not US until she finishes college. Martins will win the award easily anyway so doesn't really matter who was shortlisted, same as Ronaldo.

Seriously how did Iniesta get in the team of the year? He probably had the worst season of his career last season?

    Stupid awards and pointless
