Balotelli has a very bookable face.
What did he expect? For the ref to go and have a word with the fans. He was literally wasting time.

I suppose there's couple of ways to look at this.

There's not much the referee can do about the racist chants but it's perfectly understandable why a player would get really angry with those chant. Some common sense could have been used to deal with Balotelli. On the other hand, if Balotelli was abusive and aggressive towards the he probably felt he had to book him.

Either ways, the villains are the fans who were were racist.

Despicable racist chants, understandable reactions and unjustified-unnecessary booking.

Don't know what he really said to the referee but if he was booked for complaining about racist fans that's ridiculous.

It’s the French league. He’s lucky the ref didn’t wheel kick him in the face.

According to L'Equipe, the ref booked him because he thought Balotelli was the one provoking the fans.
Then the speaker of the stadium asked the fans to dtop singing whatever they were singing, allegedly racists chants.

It is actually very sad that we still live in a world where scenes like this happen (and in France nonetheless). Don't understand the benefits or the reasoning of these chants by fans. Their club will certainly have to pay a fine and hopefully they're wise enough to ban those supporters. Did his other teammates hear it as well? Strange that he was booked as the referee should understand the gravity of the situation.

Balotelli has a history of provoking opposition fans. Some retaliate with racist chants as they know it will hurt him and get him out of his game.

Yeah, probably a case of me typing before reading the whole story.
I meant his face is well known to the refs. Inciting the fans etc.
It was obviously a mistake from the ref too but they do that pretty much every game.

You would hope that countries in which audible chanting from sections of supporters (I've never been to a game in France) would have systems in place to check this sort of thing during the game. It's quite sad that the defence of the referee involves reasoning that there was nothing he could do at the time. That isn't necessarily his fault, but still unacceptable in 2018.

Not sure what you mean but what I'm saying is refs make a mistake every game.
This is probably just that. A mistake to book him. The ref probably genuinely believed it was balotelli's fault.

I wish there was some real concerted action against these racists in football. I'd like to see both teams leave the pitch together if a sizable section of the fans chant racist stuff... come back when they stop, and quit for good if they keep going.

Saying "Kick it out" just isn't good enough anymore, let's do something!?

Fair enough, it came across as a kind of “he should be used to it” line.

What about some common sense? Ref tells Ballotelli he's heard it and will put in his report (so hopefully those fan's club gets fined) and goes to touchline and has a word with police?

Instead of booking a player who's upset by apparent racist chants and punishing the player for being (understandably) upset?

On the face of it, an absolute scandal for any player to get booked for this. In saying that, I can't see any reason that a ref could possibly book someone for this, especially not when currently you have campaigns to promote respect and stamp out racism in football.
Surely the yellow card will be rescinded and the ref disciplined, should be made to apologise to Balotelli also.

You guys complain about the referees in the PL and the ones in the Ligue 1 are far worse.
Next to no french ref takes part of big competitions like WC, European Cup and latter stage of the CL. It's because they're shit.

Nice only mentioned "racist insults" in their live tweeting. No follow up from Balotelli, Nice or his teammates after the game to know exactly what happened.

I tried to look it up and supporters in the Dijon stands didn't hear those insults and neither did the referees or any media, it's probably just isolated acts from a couple cnuts in the stands. Dijon is a familial club where racist chants wouldn't be tolerated. Audio recordings should be analyzed to clear things up and hopefully punish those responsible if the racist insults can be proven.

Incredible. Getting racially abused? Just take it on the chin and don't say anything. Minutes on the clock is more important apparently.

Honestly. Even if Joey fecking Barton was getting racially abused somewhere I'd fully support him taking issue with it and complaining to the referee. It has absolutely no place in football, it doesn't matter how much of an arse the player is no one deserves it.

It gets better. It was just a mistake and the racial abuse was Balotelli's fault. Mate you're digging a hole just stop.

There's a post in this thread that doesn't even deserve a reply so I won't.

What I will say is, Balotelli did the right thing. Unfortunately, not much seems to get done, hence why it's still going on in 2018.

If true, that's shameful and sad. The ref should be red carded for that.

Seems to be a lot of racist incidents in French football of late, I thought they were quite a tolerant country with having such a large contingent of Africans there. The Le Pen supporters must be more vocal now they know there's a quite a lot of them.

Could just be cos' they know Balotelli is a very emotion driven player and it's an easy way to wind the lad up, some players would use it as an incentive to play better and shut them up the best - by beating their team, but he's the type it'll affect negatively.

Still saddening we're into 2018 and this kinda thing is still prevalent. Especially as French football would have nothing on the international stage without nationalised immigrants being part of their teams that won honours.

There are many racists who don't even vote for LePen tbh .There are many who don't assume publicly their xenophobia

I'd like to be charitable to the ref and say it's a misunderstanding or that he felt he had to go by the book (aggressive player mouthing off and not calming down when being told to do so = booking) but surely the context of racist chanting has to be taken into account?

The football authorities need to give their refs more leeway to exercise contextual judgement in these kinds of scenarios, quite apart from needing to come down hard on the filth doing the chanting.

Need to be tough on this. Racist chants by a significant portion of the crowd and the referee should finish the game there. Team that fans support gets punished with defeat, let them sort it out amongst themselves then.
