This report is from an investigation by a Catalan newspaper, L'Ara. I'm struggling to find/think of a big club that's more mismanaged. How could wages spiral out of control like this? This is a player that's turning 31 at the end of this season.

Doesn't it contravene FFP, as wages are meant to comprise no more than 50% of turnover?

Imagine the fun they'll have if his level drops off a cliff anytime soon. Trying to shift him on 500-600k a week, with a 4-5 year contract!

Don't think that's one of the rules.
Barca's wage has been over 50% of t/o for over a decade.

I wonder if it's be better for them in the long term to say "thank you for your great service and good bye".

£80m bonus on top of £600k pw for 4 years. If broken down that's what? £1m pw amortised over 4 years? I mean he's the best player in the world for me, but is it healthy for Barca to be offering that?

80m bonus... ffs. No less greedy than Neymar. Messi's agent is a damn genius sounds like.

Curious what bonuses have players received with United?

The smart time to do that would've been before they lost Neymar because he felt overshadowed and stifled.

So that is why he was not signing? He wants a hefty signing bonus?

This will tell a lot about the type of person Messi is. He could easily renegotiate a deal better for both parties. Doubt it like.

Can never understand why everyone always says players are greedy when they actually hold a club accountable for what they should be paid .. They are scrambling to pay it so obviously he's worth that to them. Why should he accept a penny less.

No, hence them selling naming rights to fund it.

    Greedy?

He's the best player on the planet. He's upheld is end of the bargain, so now they have to give him that 'loyalty' final big paying contract.
If anyone deserves to come with a premium, it's him.

Having said that, he's crippling that club. Makes you wonder who, outside of the doped clubs, could even afford him.

Poor Neymar, my heart bleeds for him. It wasn't the ridiculous money thrown at him by Qatar Saint-Germain that turned his and his dad's head.

Both of these players are obviously hugely motivated by money. They are the best paid in the profession but they still ask for more. Which is no problem with me so long as it's not to the detriment of the club. But I'm starting to suspect that indulging Messi and Neymar (previously) is starting to be to the detriment of Barca as a team.

He's clearly the best player on the planet currently. That's not to say he will be in 2 years time though, which is why this contract is a bit daft on Barca' part.

Yup. If being paid something like 30m per year wasn't enough let's also demand a massive loyalty bonus during the contract.

Greed - a selfish and excessive desire for more of something (such as money) than is needed. Ex: Messi's tax woes

Thing is, that will never happen with Messi. Best player on the planet, he will age well like Ronaldo.

He will never drop off dramatically? Ok, I guess we'll see!
He's been going since about 17, and he isn't super human in physicality like Ronaldo.

Why on earth would he do that?

If he wasn't worth that to them, they'd have him out on his ear in a flash.

Clubs aren't loyal to players who have outlived their usefulness, so why should he make any concessions? He could actually get more out of them by showing how much City or PSG would be willing to drop on him, so he is actually doing them a favour, if anything!

I don’t think it’s as bad as it looks. I believe Barca include amortisation with staff costs so 84% figure is misleading. It’ll probably be around 60-65% so just under UEFA’s recommended limit of 70%.

As has been said many times before on here, Madrid and Barcelona shell out some crazy wages and bonuses to their star star players.

The smart thing for Barca to do would have been to sell Messi to PSG/City instead of selling Neymar. With that money they could have easily bought Mbappe and Dembele. Neymar, Mbappe, Dembele and Suarez would have them set for next decade. Now they are struggling to make ends meet for a single player who is a great player but just not someone they can afford to keep.

    How is it greed?

He's the best player on the planet. He'd also require about three players to come in to do the job that he does alone. That's three transfers plus three sets of exorbitant wages. This is actually the cheaper end of the stick for Barcelona, which surely plays a part in why they're going to pay it.

Feck. I forgot the first rule of Messi fan club - don't criticize Messi!

Best player or not, pure greed at play here by demanding loyalty bonuses. Goes for any player.
