I reckon Barca can finish 2nd without Messi. So, technically, in my opinion they need none.
The fans should be furious at Messi as well. He's being a greedy cnut.
Bloody hell, he’s going to be able to shop in Waitrose at this rate.
That's not answering the question - to replace him, it would cost more than they are shelling out on him alone.
Do you think that statement is incorrect?
So what happens if Barca can no longer play in La Liga...?
Now you're twisting the narrative to support Messi's greed demands. Well done. Take a bow.
I see what you did there. boom tisch.
But still, to remain as competitive as they are, it would either take a massive outlay on replacing him, or, a payment that keeps the status quo.
The latter makes more sense than turning things upside down.
You didn't even say how or why it is greed. What narrative do you think there is to twist? He is worth a fee well in excess of anyone else. It baffles me that anyone thinks a player should take less than he's actually worth as if to do a club a favour.
They've obviously weighed the numbers up themselves and are willing to pay, which tells its own story because clubs will draw a line if the player is not worth it to them any longer.
I would sell him in 5 sec
Wouldn't it be greed on Barca's part if they don't pay him what his performances were worth for them?
Interesting that many fans side with the billionaire owners (yes, I'm aware that Barca isn't owned by a single person - speaking in general here) over the millionaire players in such cases.
I did state so. Earning 30m per year, the highest in the world (or at some point was), isn't enough so also demand a massive loyalty bonus that is equal to three seasons worth of salaries. Clubs have to cave in to a demand from a player as great as Messi. I'm all for players getting whatever dollar that can, doesn't mean they're not greedy fecks though.
They're paying him 30m per season for his "performances." Loyalty bonus is above and beyond. If agreed in the contract Barca should pay up. That's clearly not my point which is a player being greedy by demanding excess, i.e. "loyalty" bonus.
FFS, Messi is like Jesus or Mohamed to some.
If we'd had to choose between keeping Ronaldo or calling Old Trafford the Aeroflot Arena, I'd like to think we'd have sold him.
How much money is Barca making directly/indirectly due to having Messi? 30 m is nothing compared to that.
I would have the same opinion concerning any other player of that magnitute like Ronaldo, so stop putting up baseless accusations.
Way above both.
So is your issue is that player(s) get a massive final pay day for their [assumed] final contract from a club, or is it just the numbers with Messi that you find contentious?
It's simple relativity - he's the best, so he comes with the highest premium there is.
The numbers are eye-watering until you actually consider how much it would cost them to replace him outright whilst remaining as strong as they are with him at the club.
Given the way the market played out this summer, £80m won't even get you one top-end player and that's before wages are factored in, and to replace Messi, you're going to need two or three of those.
I think Barca will make shit tonnes of money regardless of the player, one of the top clubs in the World.
What if it was SHARP Arena?
No, "Wonderful Gas" is the only one I'd consider.
He's also receiving 5m per year in image rights, so Barca is giving him a generous share.
Speaking of, these image rights is what he got him and his father in legal problems. I believe players in England had similar issues a time ago on the image rights provision to skirt tax laws.
Well, we do know Messi exists, so...
Barca would not finish 2nd without Messi. I'm not even sure they would be top 4.
Players play for Barca because they love the club; not because of the money. Or so it was said.
You can believe that but you cannot pass it as certainty, sorry.
Well I think it is almost certain Atletico would finish ahead of them if they hadn't had Messi, they would have a stronger team in every formation.
fecking 80M for Messi, and we succesfully sent satellite to Mars in 70M.
Such a life.
Wage bill at £430m is absolutely ridiculous considering Messi and Suarez are their only truly top class players now.
No, it really is not.
I would be disgusted with the club if we had to rename Old Trafford to pay someone a bonus.
Messi is clearly bigger than Barcelona if this is the case.
It's the fact that everytime a player is linked, they then say that Messi approves of him. Excuse me who is running this club?
Messi of course.
Didn't Messi text Pep to confirm if he was still the main man once Zlatan joined
600k and an 80m signing bonus? No 30 year old is worth that. I'd sell him. Unfortunately for us he'll end up City and be great for a couple of years.
Just think for that kind of money you could buy Oxlade Chamberlain and Andy Carroll and still have change.
You don't cripple a club to keep one player.
If they had any sense they should have sold him in the summer and looked to build for the future.
If we can survive Munich, I'm pretty sure Barca can get over the loss of one man
Instead, they should flog Suarez.
And then sell him.
Barca gave him a chance, paid his medical bills and he can't stop asking for more and more money. A sad story, IMO.
Ofcourse he is greedy. Just like most others and the clubs themselves. He values himself to demand that and he will get it. Clubs doesn’t budge from their asking price during transfers until they are satisfied. It works both ways.
Sports is not a charity. All this high horsing bullshit from posters here is pathetic.
I'm always curious... how does he think that 80m is going to improve his life?
Separate names with a comma.
