The rumours have been flying around since Christmas but seem to be getting more solid.

Guardiola thinks Alves should be sold and the club agrees. Pep's had a few run-ins with him this season: late back from Brazil, too many off-field headlines with his girlfriend, and a row that started with, "Your job is defending," after a mistake.

Pique has also been in the doghouse, but as he's a local lad he's considered salvageable.

Abidal, while not officially retired, is not expected back.

Expect Barca to be shopping for defenders this summer.

Alves is a very good player but that's never prevented Barca from getting rid of players like that

I reckon they'll try for Tiago Silva again or Javi Martinez to bolster at CB.

    Is his job really defending?

Also, what is Guardiola doing still deciding transfers?

Never been a huge fan of Alves, for all the attacking he does his end product is more than often terrible.

David Luiz on the cheap. Martinez and Silva are great shouts though.

He'd be absolutely perfect for them.

Centre-back with great ball playing abilities, AC Milan player who completed the most passes last season... He's tailored for them

Alves is still probably the best rb in the world (if you play with attacking full-backs). I'd love to see him at utd.

Alves was at his best when Messi was playing on the right side of the attacking trio. They had great understanding

It's his job, when his manager says it is :D

This is one of Guardiola's going away presents to Vilanova, who's believed to feel the same.

This year's Valencia to Barcelona move is expected to be Jordi Alba.

Yep. Sid Lowe wrote a piece on this. On form his attacking play adds a lot to Barcelona.

Really? He doesn't score many, though he has scored some critical goals for them, but his assists run at about 20 per year. More than most wingers.

Alves insists on an insane level. Unfair to criticise his attacking output IMO.

If Barcelona get Martinez and Silva, we're in trouble again.

Would be a frightening team on paper, and for quite some time and all.

    67 assists in 4 seasons (15-15-20-17), as a right-back... yeah, terrible.

They'll have to be careful not to remove what little width they've currently got.

And they'll somehow get them both for comparative bargain prices if history is any judge.

Chelsea would seem to need Alves more than City, but as we know there's not necessarily a connection between need and purchases at City. Any PSG links for him?

I never said he has no end product, i said at times it can be terrible. He also does not play as a right back, spends more time in the attacking third than in his own half.

    This is true.

But I think he is brilliant attacking wise.More often terrible or not.

Even a winger who gets as many assists as him would be called the best in the world.

There was a story in the papers that he went bat shit crazy at a few fans asking for Messi's autograph.

Seems a bit strange off the pitch.

He's top of their assists charts every year. He's extremely valuable to them.

    You mean assists yes?

Is he a bit of a cnut though? If he is Fergie wont bother most likely. Besides I think he is set at making an RB out of Raphael and sure isnt Clyne supposed to be coming our way?

He doesn't defend. How can he be the best right back?

    He's the best wing back

    Dani Alves > Clyne.

It all depends on fees an wages if SAF should entertain the idea of signing him. He's a bit of cnut yes but he's not a morale destroying one.

If a guy like that is available you should try and get him. He'd improve every team in the world basically. No more Jones at right back as well. He's at a prime age now.

 He might be better than Clyne but my point is we already have Clyne supposedly and Raphael and Jones and Alves will cost a lot of money so wont happen.

I'm not saying it will. I'm saying if there's an opportunity for it we should grab it. You don't know how much he will cost. If you're getting sold from Barcelona or Real it's usually at a cut down price. We didn't get Sneijder on cheap. Robben and VdV were also available. Zlatan cost less than Suarez when he got sold to Milan. So if there's a nice price in all this we should get him. He'd improve our team, no question about that.

We also need a player that's a bit of a cnut. Opposition fans are hating on our players for little to nothing now. He'll annoy the shit out of people :)

Alves is actually very good defensively, it's just that, you know, he plays for Barcelona, so he doesn't really have to do much of it.

Ballague saying Alves and Villa both on the way out?

Alves is the best of his breed - no other player will be able to dominate the right-flank to the same extent. The alternative could be to deploy a more conventional full-back paired with a traditional winger in the mould of a Robben or Navas, but they'd need to take a man out of the centre.

    Ah yeah this story:

The story's got so many holes in it - three students staying in a £350-a-night hotel; getting chucked out for 'no reason'; selling the story to the Sun; previous form for stealing Schalke kit, etc.
