Found this graphic on Reddit. Interesting trend amongst the best teams in Europe around each time and I forgot how much of a power house Inter used to be, broke the world record for Ronaldo and Vieri.

Also interesting to see our rise in the charts after Fergie retired.

*Edit: This is NET spend apparently.

Reality check for people who keeps saying we used to outspend everyone. Liverpool spent more than ManUtd when SAF was still managing ManUtd.

Wow, some were expected but the fact that we spent significantly less than everyone else until recent years is somewhat surprising. And City is just a Usain Bolt of spending: gave everyone a 20 years head start then blow them out of the water

Class of 92 might have had a great impact on that one.

Found this one, 2002 to summer last year 2018. Plus, it also include clubs that earned the most.

Portuguese clubs earned the most money.
While surprise surprise United is the second highest transfer money spender.

Only posted this because I found it interesting and as this thread had already been opened its a good way to look at the last 30 years and more or less you find the correlation between the periods where the top leagues were. Very evident Serie A was the dominant one in the 90's, only challenged by Barcelona and later Real Madrid.

@Rifer I don't know if it was the clubs (portuguese) or a certain agent, but lets keep it like that.

chart changes largely based on TV deals. You can see Barca/Madrid increase all spending massively after 99 when they signed independent TV deals. Then our spending the last few years. Madrid have lowered spending because thy crushed the market pre inflation with guys like Modric/Kroos/Ronaldo/Bale all going for fees that look like bargains. They'll go mad in the next few years trying to replace them all.

    Very interesting.

The problem with our spending was it was.during periods where we saw extreme inflation in fees.

Adjusted for inflation, I'd say Real would win this hands down.

    This.

Due to our heavy debt burden, we massively under invested from 2009-2013 which in hindsight was a peach of a period for getting top players for reasonable fees.

We have been playing catch up ever since.

The most hilarious thing about that is the appearance and disappearance of Leeds.

No inflation. So it's distorted no matter what you think of City.

Not particularily surprising considering you guys had a strong spine of players from your own academy throughout all of his years.

Was freaking out for a minute around 2016 there, didn't think we were gonna catch Real Madrid but then we went full Usain Bolt. Another title for us.

No surprise really cept Everton being on there a couple of times.

Alex Ferguson did absolutely amazing but him aside, those at the top were usually those who spent the most.

Massimo Moratti and Silvio Berlusconi were the true sugar daddies and real fans throwing lots of money for their teams (even though with different results, due mostly to the dark powers of cheat of Juventus of that time), it's incredible the gap between the first (Inter's Moratti) and the seconds during '97 and 2005.... unfortunately the Inter & Milan owners at that time didn't have the foresight of the english managers of investing on infrastructures, merchandising, etc. we would have a way different scenario today

Liverpool back then were like how we are now. A scatter gun approach of spending loads of money on mostly shite players.

The thing that creeps me out about that graph is our huge waste of money post-Fergie. We have been atrocious in the transfer market.

Definitely adds weight to the arguments for a DoF and not signing older big budget players.

Cool graphic too. Few surprises in there. I imagine in a year or two Real and Barca will be above us again soon and PSG will make an appearance.

I bet most of Chelsea's spending went to the jungle song's copyright owner.

Also, City can feck off. It's basically Chelsea 2.0.

Liverpool really have amazingly few trophies in that period considering their placement on that chart. Obviously our trophies and results since Fergie retiring have been abysmal as well considering the amount of Money we've wasted. Scary really, we've spent an absolute fortune, yet our squad is worse than the one Fergie left.

See what happened to Cragnotti (former Lazio owner before Lotito) and then you will understand it, same goes with Tanzi (Parma) or Cecchi Gori (Fiorentina)….
