Now this may be a a bit pre mature to say this but something doesn't look right between Woodward and Jose. It won't be wrong to say our transfer window up till now has been bad. And with Jose coming out yesterday and suggesting that he may not get the deals that he wants makes me feel Woody and co. may not be fully backing jose. Now I understand managers dont get everything they ask for but this seems like Conte/Chelsea board situation from last year. It's also strange for the first time Woodward has not said anything about the upcoming season, surely something doesnt look right with him and Jose.

I seriously hope this doesn't have a bad ending and turn out to be Chelsea 15-16 season for us. Like is said this could be a pre mature reaction and we may end up signing some top players but so far it looks like Board has just given up on Jose.

He's always throwing shade at Woodward, this is nothing new.

To me, it seems that Jose is asking for an absolute fortune to be able to bridge the gap between ourselves and City.

Maybe the board believe that Jose's targets are grossly overpriced, or that they are actually unattainable and Jose is finding it hard to believe.

Either way, it doesn't bode well for us as I reckon we need to bring in another 2 excellent players.

    Disagree.

The reports of us unwilling to pay 50m for Sandro so switching to Maguire instead proved it's not that we're not willing spend, because Maguire will end up costing even 50m or more and he's not as shiny name as Sandro.

Something is wrong with the transfer policy of the club but I don't think it's warm between both.

If Ed isn't believing in Mourinho ways he would have sacked him already.

Or Jose knows through his own channels that they're attainable and Woodward is lying to Jose and saying that they're not and doesn't know that Jose knows that Woodward knows.

I haven’t seen the interview you’re speaking of but and I’m by no means the first person to defend Jose, I think he could be doing what he so often does with things like this and just leaves them open to interpretation as both a way of getting his point across to the board but leaving himself enough room to be protected.

Like he could easily turn this into the players I want are Neymar, Bale,Mbappe,Messi so on but I can’t get them if you know what I mean and no one would really hold that list against Woody as an issue as most people are sensible enough to know those are big names that would take a lot of negotiating.

Pretty much every summer he strops about saying he has no idea about transfers and that you'll have to ask "Mr. Woodward". He's basically saying he's given his targets to him but lays the blame on them not coming on Woodward, and he does it in an incredibly negative way considering they're supposed to be working together.

Board to dominate play, but Jose to come out on top.

    I predict 1-2

Seems a bit of an invented story, may want to actually wait until the window closes.

If Sanchez had been signed this summer and beaten City to both he and Fred i think this place would be a lot more optimistic.

Daniel Harris is suggesting on Twitter that the Glazers are happy with the squad as is knowing it's good enough for top four so they're unwilling to splash the cash needed to take us up another level.

    Seems believable enough honestly.

Don't think there is any issue, just that we are finding it hard to conclude the deals

It's classic Jose to have a dig at whoever for the benefit of himself. He did this last season as well. But I disagree about "the board has given up on Jose" bit. Woodward probably knows this is what He has to deal with if Jose is the manager and the lack of transfer movements could easily be linked to World Cup and targets not being available or hard to get. The fact that it's getting harder to get players the closer it is to a new season only makes things worse. We're fecked the moment the World Cup started.

Targets like Sandro didn't participate in World Cup. It looks like the only player who played in WC and we want him is Maguire.

Fair point. That's why I said this could be a pre mature reaction. However, let us not forget this is the same board who spend foolishly in van gaal era and even during Jose's first season. Don't blame the board for not fully trusting Jose but then what's the point of keeping him

We have been spending nearly 150m each summer since LVG came. They only thing changed is the amount of players these 150m are spent on.

There has been no apparent bust-up reported.

Things were always going to take time after the World Cup.

Whether that means we get more in or not I don't know either but it doesn't mean they aren't working together.

We don't know what goes on behind closed doors, but I'm also sensing a little frustration from Mourinho.
    • He seems a moodier than before in press conferences.
    • Have Woodward and Glazer refused him the signings he wants?
    • Are they dissatisfied with his current signings?
    • Are they waiting for him to have a meltdown?
    • His contract was only renewed till 2020, does that mean that they don't see him as a long-term option and are looking beyond?
    How will this infold?

He is not exactly going to say "yep were getting all my targets and the negotiations are going great". Plenty of times he deflects the question because he does not want to give too much away depending on the situation. There is no point picking on the comments that can be portrayed as negative. What about his other comments about EW, "It's not easy he's working very hard to get what we want" etc etc. He also recently said "I don't deal with negotiations or agents at all its Mr Woodwards department". Using the words "Mr. Woodward" is a mark of respect with a little humour as it's his boss after all. Other managers do the same or they say "The chairman". No point trying to make something of nothing.

I am sure their relationship is fine or he would not have been kept here nor would he have been given an extension just recently to take his time here up to 6 years.

I don't understand why people have a problem with what we have done in the window so far. Bought Fred and Dalot, plus the mighty Lee Grant, and sold Blind and Johnstone for decent fees. What is wrong with that? I am not seeing a lot of options for improving our team beyond that and the window isn't over yet.

The recent comments are more likely reflective of the difficulty getting the players he wants than anything to do with the budget.

The issue is that we are finding it hard to conclude deals because we aren't paying up. Just like Perisic last summer. It all comes back to the Glazers, they have almost convinced some that we can't afford some of these players. It's a big joke, United are taking in more money than any other team. The club have been milked by them for years. If United were run right we would be buying a huge player every year. I'm talking Mbappe, the best around.

However, we did not care about the money part. Now the board has been a bit cautious in just blindly trusting the manager. Sandro deal not happening is one instance and then last season perisic. I still dont understand why the board is unwilling to pay for sandro when every dog in the town knows we need a LB.

I see nothing wrong with the club not wanting to give Jose all of his desires. They have to think of the long-term aspects of the club, and a bunch of expensive 29 year old players with 2-3 years of use is not that. We really can't match City every summer, so why bother wasting the effort. If Jose is such a good manager, he should be able to get by with smart signings, and by smart, I don't mean hand me downs obviously. We've made good signings to this point and he's even got Sanchez. I don't mind a senior CB, but not another short-term attacker. That being said I have no problems getting rid of Martial as he just doesn't seem to have the mindset to be at United, and there's talent out there to replace him.

The Martial stuff will be interesting if reports are true. Board want to keep a talented 22 year old, Jose wants to sell and get a 29 year old.

We need a LB, at least one CB and a RW. We have added a CM and a young RB. So far our transfer window has been underwhelming. There's no two reasons to think otherwise.

How do you know if we did care or not if it's the same money spent every season, the 150m ? That looks like it's our fixed budget every season and we are disturbuting them on different numbers of players.

As I said previously, switching from Sandro to Maguire doesn't make any sense money wise since Maguire will end up costing more. Something is wrong there, but I don't think it's the money, either way we wouldn't have signed anyone of both.

I am not underwhelmed by it personally. I also can't get excited about most of the options available. Many of the players being discussed would barely even improve us.

We have significantly strengthened our attack (Sanchez) and our midfield (Fred) recently. I think we are looking for a left back but seeing few options available. A centre back would be easier but we surely should sell first and that won't be easy, and the options we have are pretty good. Some fans just want transfers for their own sake.

We buy a huge player every year. You think it's sustainable to spend 150m every summer on one player?

We have spent fortunes since SAF left, too much of it has been wasted though. The issue is Mourinho wants 28-29 year old players for large fees and large wages and I don’t think any club is going to want to splash out repeatedly on those kind of players.

The board and Mourinho are both at fault and are not on the same page. Worryingly that is unlikely to change.

Jose has had plenty of money to spend, and will again this summer, the fact this still leaves gaping holes reflects badly on Jose now.

I think at this point into his time here 2-3 signings should be a we need, and that's what we'll do.

To some extent you could understand it. They've spent bucket loads post-Ferguson and you can't honestly claim Mourinho is currently getting the most out of what he has. Sure the squad needs improvements but the quality of football isn't good enough when you see the players we have already.

My view also. I'd rather give Shaw one final chance and buy Tierney next year after he's more ready. I'd be fine with Maguire but depends on which CBs we let go and the price.

Mourinho watched his team draw 0-0 with San Jose Earthquakes in Santa Clara on Sunday and afterwards appeared downbeat about his prospects of welcoming more new players before the deadline on August 9.

United have signed Fred, Diogo Dalot and Lee Grant this summer but there is a nervousness among fans that it will not be enough to overhaul City, who won the Premier League title by 19 points last season.

Asked directly at Levi's Stadium whether there will be more signings, Mourinho told a news conference: "One thing is what I want and another thing is what is going to happen."

Anthony Martial's future is also up in the air after his agent, Philippe Lamboley, said in June the Frenchman wants to leave.

Mourinho, however, suggested it would not be the 22-year-old's decision.

"I would like to be in Los Angeles now and I am in San Jose, you cannot do whatever you want in life," said the Portuguese coach.

"I would love to arrive in L.A., to train in L.A. and play all my five matches in L.A., and then don't travel, don't change hotel and then go back to Manchester.

"I would like to play against Leicester [on the opening weekend of the Premier League season] on Sunday but I have to play on Friday, so you don't get always in life what you want."

If there is a disagreement I think it boils down to Jose being upset the board is not paying huge fees necessary to sign players with no resale value.
Imo, that falls down on the board again. Why hire that kind of coach in the first place?

The quality of a window is not defined by how much business you do. A few years back when we signed Schneiderlin, Schweiny etc many Utd fans were declaring it the best window ever. Turns out it was really quite shit.

Sometimes, selling can be more important than buying. I would like to see the likes of Darmian gone. Loans are needed too...

The last training session before the San Jose game, Woodward was at training and Jose walked over to him, chatted a little and then Jose went back to training. Whereas Ed had a beaming smile and was talking to McKenna and Carrick. So I don't think their relationship is too bad. It's never going to be a Fergie/Gill relationship, however, it doesn't seem too bad.

Of course Jose's frustrated, we all are. Suppose the sounds coming out from Jose is also a message to the fans. Because we keep banging on about getting players and I'm sure Jose does too.
