When you have billions for fullbacks and backup fullbacks, why not spend a little more to help them feel better when they read about their team on the internet? Can the press be bought? You be the judge :)

Actual screen grabs from actual "sports news" websites.

"Physical play from lesser opponents" in horrifying attempt to derail the heroic triumph of football geniuses.

And here's what happens when you don't put the same effort into cultivating a specific image with the press: all the negatives brought info focus with talk of age, cost, selfishness and failure.

Team winning the league in 'shock' positive commentary.

Team underperforming after spending hundreds of millions and playing boring football in 'shock' mixed commentary.

    Yep.

Though to an extent it is possible to have the press be more 'sympathetic' to a manager (i.e. don't report as scathingly) if they do what Moyes did and take prominent members of the media out to dinner like he did when he was at United but that is about as far as it goes.

It's definitely bordering on paranoid thinking but you'd be foolish to think it doesn't happen to some extent. There's no law against it as an example. In City's case we're dealing with a soverign state so they would be constantly after positive press.

Obviously they get positive press because they're very good, but there's a good medium article about their PR team which is, by all accounts, excellent.

Certainly they represent everything football fans claim to hate but seem relatively well liked in spite of it.

Indeed. City are used for soft power purposes. I doubt they actually offer them brown envelopes but they treat the press very well so long as they don't ask political questions.

Steady on, no one is being banned for saying untoward United or Jose. Although I do think labelling people as "City Lover" is a tad unsavoury!

Nobody is buying off the press. City play fantastic football, Liverpool the same ( if defensively dodgy), Spurs do as well. Us and Chelsea don't. Of course they want to report on something that looks good. It is human nature.

Honestly I wouldn't entirely put it past a City's PR team to try and get some journos to write positively about them to improve their image. That being said I think a lot of the love fest for City has simply to do with Guardiola and the way his teams are playing. I feel like most of the football journalists out there absolutely love Guardiola, apart from the Bavarian yellow press probably and that's the main reason we see so many over the top positive City articles this season and honestly it's not entirely undeserved even though most people on here don't want to hear that.

Of course you can do it, look at Madrid, although it requires pressures and favors, political and business.
You can also finance an online media to write about journalists who are being critical.
Besides they can promise exclusives or interviews in exchange for some favorable opinion articles.

If only there was an impartial news outlet to report on the dodgy citheh favouring press. What happened to sports witness? Did their wheels fall off or something?

A team that's on a record setting PTS pace and won 5-1 is getting praised by the media?

    Can't believe it.

It can be done in the sense of a sports team owner buying out local media as Kroenke is reported to have done in the US. But City's situation is simply the praise that gets lavished on most (but not all) league leading sides in the country.

City are 16 points clear in February, having absolutely annihilated what is supposed to be the most competitive of Europe's top leagues with attractive, skilful football.

Fairly sure they don't need bribery or a top PR team to get glowing coverage.

This is so true. Referees are all against us, press is against us, pundits are against us and don't forget that despite struggling with football our manager has won the coveted "mind games" award.

Most here don't know how City's PR team works. If a journalist writes a negative story about City they got a call from Man City demanding an explanation. If the explanation is not satisfactory then they are blacklisted from all City related events.

It's quite obvious to see that Man City have a lot of hands in the media pie...it became so when Sanchez went to Utd over City. Man City told members of the press certain things and they went on a smear campaign.

What they are doing is borrowing from Spanish football (the directors are former Barcelona). They are entrenching themselves into the media so they can manipulate the public narrative. Man City want to become a super club; and their unethical finances are a big stumbling block towards this. Media influence is very important in painting a good image of the club.

I imagine the journalist ballsy enough to break the story that a club tried to buy them would become significantly better off in their career. No way it happens.

Whether buying off takes place it's much easier and less obvious than some posters above may think. One option would be to find someone who generally writes favourable articles about your club and give him close access to the club (player interviews etc) and link his work on your Twitter feed. Once this takes place the likelihood of negative articles by such an individual will diminish rapidly and will be relatively better known. On the negative end restrict access from negative journos and possibly ban than from post-match press conferences etc. The latter may be against EPL rules so just invite loads of journos to try and make the room full before they can get in and cite fire regs as to why they can't enter. Obviously only do this to more prominent critics not the small time ones.

A team is dominating the 'most competitive league' in a way that has never been done before playing a style that the media said will never work because the EPl is too tough is being favoured by the media now?

All we need now is a few threads on how “City and the bald twat la” have paid off the FA and the referees to keep us down, combined with some poems/borderline erotica and our transition to RAWK will be complete.

I think it's utterly pathetic that people actually think like this. We're playing shite football and getting away with it right now, City are dominating, deal with it like adults for goodness sake.

Having said that, I found the lack of attention on Pogba and his performance last night on MOTD baffling.. I think they were bought by the club.

People need to stop checking what's cooking in the neighbours pot and start worrying if you added enough salt in your own.

    I'll get my coat...
