You really can’t be sure anymore. I‘ll always have fond memories of that PSG fan here who claimed it was unfair to say they don’t have history, it only took them 20ish years after their foundation in 1970 to win a European coup, whereas it took Bayern more than 60! Yeah genius, there weren’t any European cups to compete in until 1955...
Pah. I lost count.
Not bitter, or anything.
So obvious what he meant by that post. .
As a Chelsea fan, I know it's logical to wish for easier opponents but I hope we draw Barca or PSG just for the excitement of watching my club play against the world's best, even if we'll be underdogs. That's what the CL is all about.
Not scared of any team. Our defense gives us a chance.
Sorry if someone has already linked.
This. I would much rather a team that we would have to park the bus against than the other way around
Just conveniently leave out the detail that group winners always play away first which means that in the Ro16 the team playing home in the team 2nd leg is more often than not a tier above the opposing team.
While the winrate favours the away first side in QF games, the winrate for the home first side in SF games (which represent a higher level of play than QF games) exceeds the winrate of the away first side in QF games.
Bayern or Real, please. Might as well have a go at the big boys from the get go. Imagine the confidence running through the squad if we get to the semis, after having beaten some big teams along the way. Confidence plays a massive role in the knock out rounds.
Hopefully Sevilla qualifies as second or Spartak if not Real Madrid and Juventus will be very likely for us. Also hopefully Shaktar end up second after City.
Yesterday can cost Chelsea very much. Over 70% now to get Barcelona or PSG.
The odds for Barca and Chelsea to play is pretty much as high it can be in theory if all 4 english teams win the group and we got 2 spanish team in second place. If Atletico had finished second in another group it could have been even more insane.
Napoli: Reina; Maggio, Albiol, Koulibaly, Hysaj; Allan, Diawara, Hamsik; Callejon, Mertens, Zielinski
Sarri gives Diawara the start over Jorginho, Diawara is a capable player, but you'd think he'd go with his strongest available line-up considering its a must win. Despite the fact that Feyenoord has been terrible in the group, nothing is a guarantee.
One benefit of going out the competition early is we can concentrate on the league
Yeah I wouldn't mind Barca, the build up would be great too with the history we have between us. Messi would either continue his goal drought against us or break it.
Anyone other than Real and we have fair odds of coming out on top over 2 legs.
Have a feeling that it will be Juve.
I'd like Shakhtar. They are a decent sized team who can be beat but won't completely bend over, so will make for some entertaining games.
So Bayern, Juve, Sevilla, Shakhtar, Porto and Madrid are the possibilities
Not the easiest set of games but we should be beating Sevilla, Shakhtar and Porto should we get them.
Sevilla or Porto would be nice though I don't mind any side except for Shakhtar for distance purposes.
Quite tough for us really, wouldn't like to play Juventus or Madrid in the last 16. I think they will be different animals in February. Porto would be the easiest by far
In order of preference:
Porto, Sevilla, Shakhtar Donetsk, Juventus, Bayern Munich, Real Madrid
We're due for a draw with a big team, so I'm guessing Juve or Bayern.
Agree with that.
Any of the first 3 teams = good. Any of the 3 big sides = bad.
Imagine this as the draw: Bayern-Man City, United-Real, Chelsea-Barca, Juventus-Liverpool, Shakhtar-Spurs. It's going to be one of the most exciting draws ever. So many possibilities of tough matchups.
With Mourinho at the helm, I'm fairly confident we can take on all 6 teams.
Hope it is Porto but have a feeling it would be Juventus.
Also, City vs Bayern would be nice
Would love to play Juve. I think the last time we played them was 2003. Good old times.
I felt like that is our year, we have won the champions league that ends in 8/9 year. 1968, 1999, 2008? Also 2009 final. do you think what I'm thinking?
I'd take Juve over Shakhtar myself
So 16 teams with 5 English teams all qualified, of which 4 are qualified 1st? By comparison, in the other major leagues, France has one team qualified 1st, Germany only has one team qualified 2nd (no 1st), Italy has one team qualified 1st and one team qualified 2nd and Spain has one team qualified 1st and 2 teams qualified 2nd...
English teams better win it this time, and I'd hope to see 2 English teams at least in the semi finals to come back on the European scene! And if United is one of them, that would be wonderful .
Chelsea would not beat a healthy Barca over two legs. They didn’t even win heir group and Roma was ahead of them.
Chelsea are too inconsistent and while they have a good attack and defense it’s not enough to really scare other teams. I don’t want them in round of 16, they are tough, but unless they get Beşiktaş or something they are going out next round.
it will be Porto for sure!!!
Not that fussed who we get. Wouldn’t mind playing someone like Madrid actually.
Likewise for United. Would quite fancy playing one of the big boys.
How does the actual process for drawing teams out take place?
Because there needs to be some way to make sure that Chelsea's opponents do not draw other teams first, but then that impacts the other draws.. and once a team is drawn, they cannot be drawn again etc
What about 2004-05 Draws
Man United - AC Milan
Barcelona - Chelsea
Bayern M - Arsenal
Real Madrid - Juventus
Liverpool - Bayern Leverkusen
Porto - Inter
PSV - Monaco
Werder Bremen - Lyon
They were just dream draws ... sad our goal keepers were bang average and cost us both ties.
