    Very strange indeed.

This adds to the need to bring in another midfielder in this transfer window. 2 true central midfielders + Giggs is surely not enough to start the season with.

Very worrying. It's all a bit secretive too, which is even more worrying.

    Terrible news.

As Fletcher will be very important this season.

We surely need a central mid now.Surely.

We'll be fine, it was hardly a crippling blow to us last season, in fact we improved a lot after he did get injured. If Giggs or Carrick get injured then we're in trouble though.

This is terrible news indeed. We really could do with Fletch fit & firing for the start of the season. We have some massive fixtures in the first few weeks, and if this is going to continue troubling him then it's very worrying.

Since he got injured we've beaten Arsenal once and beat Chelsea 3 times. We don't have a difficult away game until mid October, Liverpool away, he should be fine by then, and even if he's not it's hardly the end of the world.

We did really well in those games and were bang on form - especially against Chelsea. We have some big home games early doors and historically are slow starters to the season so ideally would have most of our big performers fit & ready.

If Fletch is out it means the only established midfielders we'll have for the start of the season are Anderson, Carrick and Giggs, and young Cleverley who I like a lot but hadn't played a competitive game for us yet. If they all keep fit and play well then we'll be fine, but if not then we'll be looking at probably playing Jones and Park in there as well. It's hardly panic stations, but it's not ideal.

It is a bit concerning that he still seems to be plagued by this virus - I'd really hoped he was over it and that he was just trying to get back to fitness. If the virus is back (which of course we don't know for sure) who knows how long he'll be out?

But with Gibson possibly gone, and Scholes retired (still very weird uttering that :( ) and Fletch out, we would be down 3 central midfielders. Another injury in that position and we would be struggling if no one is signed.

Fletch is a fantastic player and option to have. A loss indeed.

Fletcher was good in 07/08 and ace in 08/09.

Horrible in 09/10 and 10/11 was a disaster for him.

Yet people expect him to return as good as he was in 08/09.

Not really sure that's going to happen.

Ye that is strange thing that the club have never actually said what the problem is apart from 'a virus'.

If we cant rely on fletch then we need 2 CM's.

If we have another injury in that position we will still have two of Carrick, Giggs and Anderson, Giggs-Anderson would leave us a bit short defensively, but we could stick Jones in there, I believe he played more games in CM than at Centre Back last season for Blackburn, or we could play Park who basically does the same job as Fletcher. It's a loss of depth that we could do without, but it's only a problem if we get further injuries, it's certainly not a terrible loss at this stage.

That is just plugging gaps though. Fair enough if it is for a game or 2, but over a prelonged period of games that is not good at all. I'd expect the usual 4-5-1 if we are light in central mid, Jones swepping then could cover the centre mid partnership. Not ideal, but we would make do.

He was in the PFA Premier League Team of the Year in 09/10. Hardly horrible. Much better than in 07/08 anyway, where he didn't even play that much.

Bale was voted player of the year in 10/11.

Fletcher escaped criticism because Carrick was worse

Maybe my memory isn't as good as I thought he was but the way I remember it Fletcher was great in both 08/09 and 09/10

Fletcher's best season was 09/10 for me, he wasn't 'great' but he certainly wasn't horrible.

I believe 08/09 he was still in his "Almost every game I play against top opposition I'm going to be United's best player" phase, whereas 09/10 he was consistant in all types of matches

it was getting to the point, where he would be one of the first players on the team sheet.

even if he comes back, it will be some months before he is anywhere near his best.

think if we do end up getting Scholes' replacement, we would still need to bring in someone to replace Fletcher....

dont know if Cleverly can be that player...he had an excellent season with Wigan.

08/09 was Fletchers beast mode season. 09/10 he was amazing for the first twonthirds and then fell away towards the end

I get that Bale didn't deserve his POTY....but here you seem to be implying Bale was horrible last year?

So basically for you theres only horrible, great and messi level?

Is my recollection of his form as well. I'd say he had been a decent performer in most of his outings in 06/07 and 07/08 as well with the odd massive performance in a big game like Roma and Arsenal(cup 5t round). He was still a squad player then, mind you.

I'm getting abit concerned with how long this 'virus' is persisting. Fletcher's going to be an important part of the midfield options whomever we may sign.

If this is true, surely we're going to have to pull one of the kids from the reserves, if not buy some cover? 3 midfielders, including slow-start-carrick and injury-prone-ando, is that going to cut it ? :nervous:

So Fletcher was voted in the team of the year because Carrick was playing poorly and made him look good? Strange.
