    Interesting.

He won't have to do a great deal of actual defending at Madrid, so this could work.

I've always wondered if he'd make a good DM.

It's okay, we'll buy him back for half of whatever we sell him for. ;)

Then sell him to City. An nifty scheme by the rich clubs! feck FFP.

    No.

They never replaced Pepe. Varane gets injured quite a bit and they need another centre back.

In terms of marketability he's probably only behind Sergio Ramos in CBs and they can use an experienced defender after Pepe's left so it makes sense in those regards.

Makes sense why he was suddenly dropped in the game against us, guess they’ve known about his desire to leave for a while.

It was supposed to be Jesus Vallejo, but he's only 20. Nacho isn't bad, but he is small, so you'd think that they'd look to replace Pepe with someone a bit better in the air and more reliable than Luiz. He'll probably do fine as 3rd or 4th choice CB.

The people thinking he'll play DM are way off though. Casemiro is good and his backup Llorente is very promising. Has everything a DM needs and even a bit more mobility than normal.

He has a beast of a shot and scores some spectacular goals but he is a terrible defender.

Good riddance he will not be a loss to the Premier League.

He was dropped because he was absolutely shit against Roma. In the four games since he's only appeared once - against Qarabag.

It makes sense, DL is experienced and available and Real are light in this position since Pepe left, especially with Varane being injury prone.

Bizarre move. Why'd he even agree to go back to Chelsea from PSG?

    To win a premier league..

People cannot deny he was a key part of that. He’s been shit this season not as bad as Cahill and had a falling out with Conte.

He won't, despite contary belief he's actually awful in that position unless you are playing strictly on the counter.

No he's not. He's phrone to more mistakes than he should be admittedly but he is far from an awful defender. Usually i'd be gutted with this news but with the emergence to the sensational Christensen, Luiz has the choice between being back up or going elsewhere.

No. He was dropped because he rightly called out Conte for his appalling tactics in Rome. He got punished because it was in front of the whole team.

Utter bullshit. He was comfortably the best defender in the title winning Chelsea side last season. Terrible defenders are never key to title winning sides

The back 3 at Chelsea protected him. He'll still do well at Real in most games as they're dominant but he'll be a funny watch in a back 2 vs quality sides.

We should sign him and partner him with Bailly and Rojo. He would be excellent here.

He’s much improved defensively since his PSG days in fairness. Still a fecking lunatic, but Madrid are light at the back. The move makes sense.

No thanks. We’ve already got Rojo who can be a fecking dingbat from time to time. Don’t need another one.

I think the key to Chelsea's title winning side was them outperforming their xG metric significantly. They scored 22 more goals than they were expected to, 7 more than the next highest Spurs. It is no surprise that both those sides are under performing in relative terms this season as consistently being that clinical is impossible.

Madrid does need a good centre back, but Luiz is a bad fit. He's too similar to Ramos: really good going forward, athletic but prone to brain farts and lacking in defensive awareness. As a keeper you really need to be on your toes if you have those 2 in front of you.

Madrid had a very poor preseason. They let Pepe, James and Morata go and failed utterly at replacing them with solid quality players. The likes of Vallejo and Mayoral are not ready for that pressure cooker.

I thought Varane replaces Pepe in the starting XI and they replace Varane on the bench. Surely Luiz going there puts Varane back on the bench?
