Just seen on SSN that Nolberto Solano is out for the season for League One Hartlepool. Surprised me the other week when I heard El Hadj Diouf is at Doncaster.

If you were a former decent level prem player would you keep plying your trade in the lower echelons or would you be a Michael Owen etc...I'm not sliding down the divisions? Any more examples (eg Davids brief stint at Palace)?

I guess money plays a big part

James Beattie has played most of his football in lower leagues in the last 5 years, but he was nearly the Premier League top goal scorer two years before.

Doncaster doesn't really count though, they're doing that weird 'shop window' thing

Solano was a model professional type, top 8 club player- dunno how old he is now, but his stock has certainly sunk.

I guess we have seen several United youth players slide down the divisions over the years. Mark Robins for the older Caftards' memories...

There was strong support for him to go to the World Cup in 2006 from what I recall.

Yeah I seem to remember that, 2006 or 2004 or both.

Unlike Adam Johnson who was nearly top scorer a few years later, most of Beaties goals didn't come from penalties in my recollection. And Adam Johnson has survived in the Premier League for the most part.

To be fair, Beatie was getting on a bit when he left Southampton.

    One of your old boys...

Remember Danny Cadamarteri- apparently he is at Huddersfield. He was England's future at one point...

Indeed he was, Dubes was great. He had a massive injury from what I recall in the late nineties that prevented him from greatness - there was a strong belief at Chelsea that he would go on to play for England on top of Ferguson enquiring about him a couple of times.

I remember Cadamarteri being an Everton player though I can never remember much about Everton players specifically now I think about it.

The ultimate example I can think of was going to a local non-league match around 2000 where the captain on the day for the mighty Worksop Town was Chris Waddle, we bumped into him before the game and at the time I barely knew who he was but I asked my Dad when he was still in earshot 'was he the one who missed the penalty against Germany?'

Apparently Duberry won the league cup, cup winner's cup and the super cup, so not too shoddy.
Just seem to remember Cadamarteri being hyped up beyond belief after a couple of decent sub apps or a goal or two. Kenny would have probably forked out £25m.
Ouch Waddle:lol:My memories of him are as a decent flair player who perhaps was never as good at international level as club a la Barnes. May be harsh, I was young-ish.

On the subject of Everton players, you could also say average-decent players who went to huge clubs, like Gravesen to Madrid. (Weirdest transfer ever)

Can't think for the life of me of players that used to be with us in the lower leagues in England though. Tomasz Radzinski who was at us and Fulham went to Greece and is now in the Belgian second division at the age of 38, so he's in it for the football.

Could you say players that went to MLS are decent and are in a lower league too? You have the obvious choices like Keane and Henry who could still do a job over here.

I am reminded of Sam Dalla Bona if you recall him from around 1999-2002, he played the best part of 100 games for us and looked a decent player and then he left for AC Milan not to be heard of or seen again, despite the fact he has been on a merry-go-round tour of Serie B on loan the last five years he has played about as many games.

Don't remember him- must have been Vialli era was it?

Didn't Zola drop a league to go back to Sardinia (admittedly out of loyalty and the love?)

He's terrible now though, although obviously age plays a big part in it. He's slow, clumbersome and just generally a bit shit. He's still an absolute tank though, no-one gets through him. He was one of Oxford's worst players when they played at Barnet earlier this season.

Yeah Gravesen's star soared and burnt out- where did he go after Real? The likes of MLS, Qatar or China are very different to a year in Scunthorpe. Different level of dropping down a tier now I guess with the cash involved.

He would have been in the early Ranieri era before he became half decent.

Zola was at Cagliari for two years due to them getting promoted after the first, that deal went through within days of Abramovich buying Chelsea, he actually tried to buy Cagliari to get him back.

Celtic then back to us for a year on loan before hanging up his boots.

Aye i agree but there is also a big difference between the quality of the 'richer leagues' compared to the PL.

Aha, another former Chelsea legend, Frank 'the plank' Sinclair is playing for Colwyn Bay in the Conference North after 400 games for Chelsea and Leicester.

Feck my memory is bad. He was under Capello at Real then went to Celtic apparently....

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gravesen

Check it out, his agent was a certain John Sivebaek- just about remember him from the 80s in the Olsen, Robson, Davenport etc...years..

Not really related to England, but Rivaldo is currently playing in Angola of all places...such is his stubborn reluctance to retire.

Still remember him at Euro 2004 for Spain. He was immense in that tournament, a wicked left peg.

It's more related to England than you might think, Charlton turned him down before he went to Angola, where for whatever reason he isn't popular, and is expected to retire at the end of the year.

I liked that Everton side of Unsworth, Weir, Radzinski etc., Good side, notoriously shit to break down..

Jon Stead formerly of Blackburn and Huddersfield, playing for Bristol City now. Thought he had something about him in his Blackburn days..target man with a good touch. Had the attributes to have been capped for England if things went a little differently.

He was about 30 when they signed him though.

EDIT: fecking hell he still isn't 30 officially! Must be a case of the Kanu's.

Didn't Paul Merson drop down a league, went to Portsmouth and they got promoted. But he didn't want to follow them up thinking he was too old.

Always thought Darren Huckerby had it in him to be a lot better than he was, but his loyalty to Norwich cost him a chance at making England's left wing competitive. As the story goes we got stuck with Gerrard and Cole. Huckerby had a massive year with City, scoring loads then he stuck with them during their drop and became a big fish in a small pond.

David Trezeguet is playing in Argentina, though I suppose that may be because he has family there?
