Linked with him today by SSN(Don't make the SkyBet joke, they sold SkyBet this year).

Seems to have a release clause of 20m euros.

he's one of the world's best defenders and would be a steal at that price for 2-3 years, but I can't see it happening. Never know, though.

Would be the dream but can't see any chance of it actually happening this late.

As I said in the tweets thread:

If [the release clause is] true, I can only imagine we aren’t the first club to put feelers out to him and be rebuffed. A release clause being triggered is worthless without the player wanting the move.

See Suarez and Arsenal (although the legalities of that release clause was different to those in Spain).

Just seen that, don’t know what to think at this stage.

Is it all pressure on Spurs? They do seem to want to sell Alderweireld.

Yes but he'd actually be the best CB signing of all those we've been linked with

    Not happening though

    It's just paper talk.

If it's not, I think he'd be a great signing for a couple of seasons. World class CB and a great role model for Bailly and lindelof.

I imagine some work experience kid is sitting in the studio just plucking names out of a hat and feeding it to the professional actors on stage.

Take one name...take one club.....tweet it out.....TA DA!!! Welcome to Sky Sports.

Suarez and Arsenal were a different case, Liverpool questioned the validity of the clause, Suarez wanted to move to Arsenal.

Also I doubt any club would be stupid to trigger his clause without getting his consent to sign.

Would be supremely foolish to trigger his supposed release clause and then for him to turn around and say he didn't want to come.

He'd actually be my first choice out of all the cbs we've been linked with. Proper defender and leader.

    Not happening.

An absolute no brainer if releas cause is true, a real warrior. I believe he and griezmman have a good relationship and feel like atletico players are loyal to Simeone so don’t see it happening. But if it’s true and he’s interested I can’t believe it wasn’t done already

20m for Godin is much better deal than 60m for Maguire or Alderweireld.

Look, I'm not saying this is a complete lie but if this were true we'd have done the deal ages ago. We just have to pay his release. There's no chase. Either Godin wants to leave or he doesn't. And I'm sure he doesn't. Nothing to this at all.

If you're talking proper, old school defnders who just love defending then there is none better - he's the best in the world at that.

Godin now and Alderweireld in January/Summer? That would do nicely.

I can’t imagine what Sky Sports, a company related to Sky Bet, would have to gain from such a story.

Why wait until this late I don't understand? He's the best defender in the world but I doubt he has any interest in moving at this stage of the window. We're getting desperate...

He's probably the best center back in the world and one of the best leaders. Atletico won't sell him at any price. If we were interested we should have made him priority #1 and negotiated from day 1. Sky is probably bullshitting.

I was always under the impression that Suarez wasn't that arsed that Liverpool rebuffed Arsenal, at least not enough to pursue legal action, and was happy with an improved contract and the agreement to be allowed to be sold to one of the Spanish giants in the near future.

Triggering a release clause only has any value if the player wants to move and a compromise cannot be reached, so the club either sells him or faces legal action.

Edit: I know in Spain buy out clauses are a little different where the sum is paid to the league for the player to release himself from the contract, so the player is in a much stronger position to force through a move quickly.

New contract for Godin, almost certainly.
