Does Napoli's attacking system have a release clause?

Not a Mourinho type of player, would be a great player for City or Liverpool.

He'll be 31 next season. May as well stay in the league he's comfortable in.

The fact that Mertens has become such a great goalscorer for Napoli says more about Maurizio Sarri than it does about Mertens himself.

Wait isn't that article almost a month old? Either way, I think if he wanted to move he'd have done it last summer before he signed a new contract. I also think Napoli's attack is incredible and that has allowed Mertens to really shine as a striker. He'd still be a solid buy at £25m and would arguably be an upgrade on Miki playing behind Lukaku (a position he plays for Belgium).

If we are going to sign a 30 year old, he better offer something special that our current players lack. As long as we haven't used Zlatan and Martial/Rashford aren't playing regularly - it's stupid to sign Mertens

Aren't we buying Griezmann soon ? Would seem a bit excessive to get yet another attacker.

But yeah....€28m seems very reasonable for someone with his scoring record.

He’s excellent. But he’s playing as a false 9. Wouldn’t really fit the system or the style of football we play. Wouldn’t even be playing in his best position.

I'd rather we have a look at Insigne. Have been a fan of his game for the last 3 seasons now.

The story is 4 weeks old and it's based on an interview with former Napoli chief.

Why? Dude is excellent defensively yet can operate in any role in the front 4. He four example would solve our width issues overnight

    Not re
Not really. We need to add at least two works class players to our forward line.

He's too old. We can't be signing 30-year-old players. If we need a winger how about Leon Bailey or if we need a number 10 then how about Fekir?

In the current market you would expect to pay £100m for this lad if he was 26. That fee is fine on the basis of getting two seasons out of him, or even just the one season.

Napoli's system suits him, I would worry that he could struggle in a different one.

As long as a player is not a cf or a center midfielder Mourinho will use him if he has skill and grit. Remember Hazard who was his main man was 5 ft 8

He is clas as a striker but there's no point signing him to play wide so I'd avoid.

Only problem I would have against this signing is that he's found the best form of his career playing as a CF, throwing him out wide would just be counter-productive. Unless we change our system to that 3-4-1-2 long-term I see no reason for this to happen and let's say we do that, it would mean benching both of Martial/Rashford.

He'd be a very good signing for most teams but we aren't the right fit for him IMO.

But, it's the former Napoli director so the link isn't exactly reliable.

That is the thing, he is a CF. If you play him out wide now he isnt half as good as he currently is.

But he was a Mourinho player - and a pretty effective one at that.

Okay, he isnt a Mourinho type of player because he is a forward and incredibly short, Mourinho has always had tall strikers/centre forwards with large aerial presence.

No not too long. I think I was just trying to play down this transfer link.:wenger:

Former Napoli sports chief Marino said United are "following Mertens very closely", which means we are monitoring the player, nothing else. Marino also said "he (Mertens) is kept under the eye of big clubs". He was linked with Arsenal, Liverpool and Chelsea in the summer.
What's more, Napoli have a real shot to win the Scudetto this year. So I don't think he'll leave in January.

Because Rooney is a striker who had it all, had the aerial presence and is not a midget at all. Aerial presence, strong enough with good hold up play at the time. You surely dont want to compare Rooney to Mertens in terms of physique. Mertens is a very skinny and agile false 9, a type of centre forward Mourinho has never played with. And never will.

What if it just is quite stereotyping? It is clear that Mourinho has certain preferences and theres nothing wrong with that.
