Draxler and Gündogan are the only real suprises there really. I'd probably had picked another striker than Cacau.

Suprised they name so many keepers, although I suppose they'll get whittled down when the final squads are announced.

Looking at the squads the best team for each would be in my opinion:

    Germany

    GK - Manuel Neuer

    LB - Badstuber
    CB - Hummels
    CB - Boateng
    RB - Lahm

    CM - Schweinsteiger
    CM - Khedira
    CAM - Ozil
    RAM - Goetze
    LAM - Podolski

    ST - Gomez

    Holland

    GK - Stekelenberg

    LB - Erik Peters
    CB - John Heitinga
    CB - Joris Mathijsen
RB - Gregory Van Der Wiel

    CM - Mark Van Bommel
    CM - Wesley Sneijder
CAM - Rafael Van Der Vaart
    RAM - Arjen Robben
    LAM - Dirk Kuyt

    ST - Robin Van Persie.

Admittedly, I have only seen a couple of games in which van Wolfswinkel has played but based on these games, I am shocked that he has not been put in the squad. He looks like a great striker and thought that he would be a guarantee to go to the Finals.

No idea what the other strikers are like but can't imagine that they have all had as good a season

Bloody hell, it hurts seeing Zieler there when, if we'd kept him and loaned him out, we might have a very promising young keeper who would be considered home grown for the purposes of the PL & CL.

Götze has only had one and a half matches after an injury that has put him out of the circus since December, is 19, has no international experience, does not really link to Özil in the matches they had together.

And for him you want to let out the player, that has done an assist or a goal every 71 minutes since he arrived in the German team 2 years ago (Özil every 103 minutes, Klose or Gomez every 91 minutes, Podolski every 136 minutes) - starting point for this calculation is the match against Argentina in March 2010... - the same player that has done 3 goals and 8 assists in the recent 400 minutes he played for Germany - in the current season...

Sorry, I do not understand that Götze hype - he is a talent - great for his age and with a promising future - but not that outstanding player if you take "normal" professionals right now.

The last two years Germany lived offensively from the link up play that Özil and Müller provide with each other - Löw might do anything but the last he would do is to let Müller on the bench. There has not been anybody better in the national team in the last months, the last year, the last two years than Müller.

And Badstuber is set as defender with Löw - that is what the last year showed. Usually Löw stands behind earned players but with Mertesacker's injury and his last year it probably will be Hummels that gets the other CB-spot. Lahm will switch again to Left back.

Klose is the better choice when Müller and Özil are playing...

    GK - Manuel Neuer

    LB - Lahm
    CB - Hummels
    CB - Badstuber
    RB - Boateng (Höwedes)

    CM - Schweinsteiger
    CM - Khedira (Kroos)

    CAM - Ozil
    RAM - Müller

    LAM - Podolski/Reus

    ST - Klose

    ---------------------------

Germany starts with a regenaration camp in Italy from 11th to 18th in Italy - then they go to France. But the Dortmund players will arrive on 15th, Özil, Khedira and Klose on 16th and the Bayern players on the 25th after the CL final and the match Bayern-Netherlands.

Fabianski? Has he played any football this season?

Edit: Just four appearances, none in the league.

I reckon most on here don't recognize more than five players from that selection - Szczesny and Fabianski obviously, Lewandowski has become well known and Piszczek has been the best full back in Bundesliga for two straight years. Blaszczykowski has been linked with a few English clubs too. The rest are probably unknown.

There are a few good players in there, it's definitely a better squad than in 2008. Defence is a worry but we have a top goalkeeper in Szczęsny which should help us a lot, although last time we had Boruc in top form.

Our offensive force is better than I ever remember - a class forward in Lewandowski (player of the year in Bundesliga), decent playmaker Obraniak, tricky winger Blaszczykowski - it looks really solid on paper.

Yes, our coach despises Boruc who's a far better keeper and said he wouldn't call up Kuszczak because he has only started playing on a regular basis for Watford this year.

Well only 2 changes from your team, I was just guessing.

Thought about putting Muller in but went with the hype of Goetze. How can Gomez not be considered for a starter spot with his recent record?

That's understandable, though from what I hear he played well so even though he has only started playing regularly recently he should have been in consideration rather than a player who used to play regularly a while back and has barely had any game time this season.

Thanks, didn't know that about Boruc. Is there any reason why the coach hates him?

I think they said ours won't be announced until the season is over.

Four players to be axed from that list - a goalkeeper with ter Stegen likely as well as Gündogan, Draxler and one of the Bender twins.

Surprised to see Cacau there although Löw rates him, his season was not as good as Helmes' or Kießling's, who both probably deserved a call-up.

Mertesacker: Also highly rated by Jogi, and no surprise for me that he has been picked. Needs to prove his fitness though.

    First team:

    Neuer
    Lahm - Badstuber - Hummels - Schmelzer
    Schweinsteiger - Khedira
    Müller - Özil - Podolski
    Klose

This is dense. A manager has to put his feelings aside sometimes. Saying that, Boruc's successor has already established himself for Arsenal. Surprised PIG didn't get the nod for the third keeper. He hasn't played a whole lot this season, but he is now and by all accounts has been very successful. It'll hurt him to miss out. He requested a loan purely to get back on the squad.

Podolski has been insane for Germany from the start. Even when his league form was in the gutter, he still popped up for Germany with a goal every other game and loads of assists. He's one of the first names on the list and as this has been his best season pretty much to date for club, he deserves to keep his starting job.

Yes, the Götze hype... He will have a good future but even without the injury he would not have made it into the starting formation. Löw has used him to substitute Özil when he got a rest like e.g. against Turkey or even tried him out together with Özil in the midfield - but you really saw the differences in this matches there are still in his development between him and Müller and Özil in that matches.

Reus has had a great season and is a great player, too. But - he does not have any international experience, until now only thrieved in a special system that was designed to highlighten his strengths as front man for Gladbach and is not used to a three-day-rythm that players like the Munich players go each season.

Reus and Götze and probably Schürrle will play and get some time in the team - I guess Löw will try to give the offensive players especially Özil and Müller who have a high workrate in the matches some rest whenever possible - but they probably will not make it into the starting formation.

The only real surprise in the team two years ago was Müller - but that right offensive midfielder space was free and the others did not match so well in the job subscription like he did then - and he took his chances and delivered. The ones that come now have the problem that the ones that occupy the spots in the team have really proven to be real assets - in the World Cup, in the important matches and the qualification. It has gotten more difficult to get into the team.

Gomez... He is a real great poacher and a great forward - probably world class in what he does. But it is a question of the system. Klose is just taking part more in the team play and is always delivering when he puts this white shirt on whereas Gomez has to be served. Both ways can be as successful and Müller and Özil are certainly capable to do both - Müller does that on weekly basis as Gomez only seems to score whenever Müller is somewhere behind him and he gave him as much assists as Ribery this season. But especially after the match against the Netherlands the answer to the question Gomez or Klose is Klose - even with the Bayern fans...

Maybe that video answers a couple of that questions. Watch especially how Klose, Özil and Müller switch their places - even Khedira and Kroos took over the right side. It just has another quality and is more unpredictable like this.

There is still the question between Khedira and Kroos as Schweinsteiger is one of the unmovables because of his character. Kroos, even if he offers more technically is more offensive than Khedira - so Löw will probably will prefer Khedira to him. The last two years there never was a question as always one of the three was injured or sick.

95 matches - 43 goals and 17 assists, to be precise - an amazing return for a wide player and which also indicates that his performance level increases when he is surrounded by better players - than he was at Köln this season.

I have no doubt that he will do well at Arsenal, mind.

I think Holland will be an outside bet to win it you know. In the world cup their defence was the weak link but Heitinga has been an absolute beast this season.

Poldi will perfectly fit in there. He has german and polish teammates and Arsene Wenger will be the perfect coach for him. And he will take the Arsenal fans by storm as he did at Cologne. No club in the best five leagues in Europe was so dependent on a player as Cologne was - he had an assist or goal in 65 per cents of their goals.

Poldi is the one that brings in the additional goal power as Müller and Özil are more the ones that assist and Klose a forward that is less a poacher but assistant, too.

In the last 2 years since the match against Argentina in March that all of the four - Klose, Özil, Müller, Podolski - play in that formation the performance reads like this:

    Klose: 22 matches, 1362 minutes, 11 goals, 4 assists, a goal/assist every 91 minutes
    Müller: 26 matches, 1863 minutes, 10 goals, 15 assists, a goal/assist every 73 minutes
    Özil: 24 matches, 1937 minutes, 7 goals, 12 assists, a goal/assist every 102 minutes
    Podolski: 28 matches, 1947 minutes, 8 goals, 5 assists, a goal/assist every 149 minutes

Gomez (who shared time with Klose): 20 matches, 1066 minutes, 10 goals, 2 assists, a goal/assist every 91 minutes

Poldi is somehow a victim of the system as they play a lot more with the right side than with the left side today - but that would happen with any other player, too. But he is always a goal threat with his left hammer and that is a very good addition to the other ones.

Hardly outsiders, I'd say they're second or third favourites.
