How many clubs can qualify for it from the PL and where they should finish?

Does Chelsea winning the FA Cup open up a spot for another club? If we win the CL will that spot be taken by the 4th placed team?

    Can someone explain.

The whole thing is a clusterfeck depending on all the different variables in play, but I believe that 5th place in the league is a lock depending on crossover with the cup winners. So, if you win the CL, then yes, 4th and 5th will become EL spots.

5th and 6th are now Europa spots regardless of what happens. 4th becomes one too if Chelsea win the CL.

Two clubs from Premier League and Liverpool will play in the next years EL.mif it stays like this and Chelsea don't win CL, it'll be:

CL: Man City, Man Utd, Arsenal, Spurs.
    EL: Newcastle, Chelsea, Liverpool.

    If Chelsea win CL:

CL: Man City, Man Utd, Arsenal, Chelsea
    EL: Spurs, Newcastle, Liverpool.

What about the fair play league? Which country is getting that this season?

Please Please Please Let Chelsea not win CL.
It's so unfair on 4th placed club.

That's wrong. If Chelsea win CL the 3rd placed team still goes into the group stages, not the play-off round.

Yeah...4 teams go into the group stages. It clarifies that the top 3 remain unaffected, only the 4th placed team.

I assumed it was like you had done (with a knock-on effect all the way to 3rd) until I read those permutations. I think somebody said on here that the Belgian champions will have to qualify rather than go straight in, as the rankings currently stand.

The first London club to win the CL has been pretty much a battle between Arsenal and Chelsea. Imagine the look on most Gooner's faces if they finished 4th and Chelsea win the CL. It would be as painstaking as us losing the league to City on goal difference :(

    I checked Milan in 2007.

They finished fourth in the league, won Champions League and started in September in Group Stage with first and second team in Italy, ony one team (third) had to play qualifications, instead of two, as it used to be then.

So yes, if Chelsea win Champions League, four English teams will start in Group Stage.

It's not the most unfair thing in the world (Chelsea qualifying). Since the European Cup began the European Champions have been allowed to defend their trophy 1 2.

Harsh on whoever finishes 4th of course and a play-off between the two English clubs would obviously be for the best, but what can you do?

If you're not able to finish top four in your league, you shouldn't play in Champions League next season. Winning Champions League shouldn't give you a place in next year's competition if there are (at least) four better teams in your country.

    That's my opinion.

I don't really see a problem with the situation this season. The rules are clear and there for all to see, whoever finishes 4th knows well in advance that they'd lose that spot if Chelsea win the CL unlike last time when Liverpool won it.

But if Chelsea are the best team in European Competition why should someone whose best claim is that they're fourth in their country get in over them?

Everton didn't play in Group Stage not because Liverpool won Champions League, but because they lost 2-4 to Villarreal in third qualifying round.

But if Tottenham are fourth-best team in English League, why should someone whose best claim is that they won European knock-out competition and finished behind them in the same league get in over them?

Are Leicester City better than Manchester United? Are Brighton and Hove Albion better than Manchester City? No, but looking at certain English knock-out competition you could think so.

Aye, it was clear when season started, but it's a bit unfair. That's what I'm saying.

Erm, that "European knock-out competition" is actually the most important competition in club football, and winning it is a much bigger deal than finishing 4th in the league. No one prevented whoever finishes 4th, most likely Spurs, from finishing 3rd which would secure CL regardless.

Exactly, it's fecking 4th, there are three places above where they could've finished and be sure about CL. It's not like they're denying champions the spot.

Who else's opinion would it be? They're European Champions, they deserve the opportunity to defend their title. The rules are clear that if you win the European Cup, you get the opportunity to defend it, that's been the case since the competition began, regardless of League placing.
