Come on now GB, we all know Arsenal would bid €90,000,001.
Been recently linked with him.
If Jose is going to persist with a 4231, then a double pivot of Matic/Fabinho would be solid. Would also be Matic's natural successor.
Still find it quite bizarre we didn’t sign him in the summer. He’d bring so much to our midfield.
Why would we play with two DMs?
Metro. Fake news.
If we were to sign him, I’d prefer to use him as a RB.
At least until Matic declines.
Erm because we signed Matic?
And do we not still a midfielder?
They’re not even remotely similar.
The only way he'd make any sense is if he was being brought in to compete with Matic at the base as the them two together would be so negative and I don't think he's fast enough or dynamic enough at RB for what we need.
He’s really not an overly defensive midfielder. Quite obvious a lot of people here don’t watch him play too often.
He’s nothing like Matic.
I've seen him play dozens of times, his passing is average and he's not going to drive the ball forward much, he's a holding CM that protects the back 4.
Matic is not negative by any stretch of imagination. In fact, if anything, it is Jose that's probably asking him to hold back more for defensive stability.
Who is the back up for Matic when he's out for a while?
What would you think of having Fosu-Mensah do that instead?
Right now I think Mctominay seems ahead of the pack.
We have many times this season already. Its by far our strongest formation.
Yeah the problem is that we keep asking Pogba to be one of those DM's
Di Marzio is saying this?
Edit nvm it was a made up Metro story

I actually thought they were, based on the little I've seen of Fabinho. Also a DM with a a good engine/physique, decent passing range, like Matic.
Shows you how little I know.
Mentioning Fabinho to Di Marzio probably gives him cold sweats.
Do you mean Herrera and Matic? As Herrera's more box-to-box.
He’s far more of a destroyer than a holding player and is brilliant at carrying the ball forward - He gets involved with the attack far more than Matic and gets involved all over the pitch.
Matic is closer to a Carrick type where Fabinho would be more similar to Keane stylistically. I’m amazed people think they couldn’t play together, I think they’d compliment each other brilliantly.
Yeah, i think people (myself included) maybe assume Fabinho is too defensive/doesn't offer enough offensively to partner Matic. But based on what you write, it sounds like he'd have little issue contributing offensively.
He;d add a lot of steel and solidity though, no doubt.
We will most probably need 2 midfielders in the summer and I would not mind Fabinho being one of them. He would also be cover for RB.
Consider that in Monaco's brilliant league winning season, Fabinho contributed 12 goals to the cause.
That's a very healthy return from a defensive player.
From what I have seen of him, he looks very classy.
Very good at interceptions, which suggests that his awareness & positioning are spot on.
Very comfortable on the ball and good at retaining possession, and as you say, brilliant at carrying the ball forward.
I really think he would be a perfect fit for us in a midfield three, as he would link up play between defence and attack so well.
Also what I really like about Fabinho is his versatility to play either in a defensive midfield position or being able to spring forward and support the attack.
This would give us so much flexibility during a game.
This is a very underreated point.
Fabinho could either play the CM position connecting Pogba+Matic and/or play the DM role whenever need be if Matic is injured or just needs a bit of a breather considering his age and all.
A player like him would give the best of both worlds offering up the flexibility he does. Really like the idea of getting such a player but the only thing I wonder is if it’s worth it considering that would mean with Fabinho starting there’s no real other starting position to address on the team AKA we don’t use our big money signing since Fabinho would be rather cheap in today’s market. And would José even want a player like that since historically he goes after specialists and players that fit a specific role/position.
9 of those were pens.

journos are a joke
If it's true, would be a good signing.
It seems obvious we need another midfielder and he'd be a great signing, but you almost never hear of deals going through a week after the window has shut. Seems like there's down sides for both clubs and the player, who wants to play at a club for half a season knowing you're about to leave, and what club wants a player thinking that? From our POV we've bought a player which we can't use for months, who could suffer an injury before he even comes and we might even find a better alternative in the mean time.
While I'm sure we'd be interested, this just seems too quick to be done yet.
Aye, 12 goals is immense. And even more so for a "defensive" player. He took penalties though, right?
By negative I just mean they are both sitters, DM's who's main focus is protecting the back 4 and keeping it simple most of the time, it's what they do best, you don't need two of those playing at the same time, neither are going to ease the creative burden on Pogba or help us add some tempo and rhythm to our possession.
Yes. Thanks. So we either trust him to play that role or buy a more experienced DM.
I get your point but it is not strange in modern football to play two DMs. In fact many famous teams have done so with brilliant effect. Busquet has played well with Mascherano. He has also played well with Alonso in the Spanish national team. We have also seen Martinez combine well with Bastian. We have also seen Matic play well with Kante. The examples are many. The key is for the two players to have diverse skill sets and for the opposition to require such a formation. Matic, as a DM, has the capacity to switch from a deep lying playmaker role to a holding midfielder role or a B2B role.
Call it the double pivot or whatever, at times two DMs can give you defensive stability, possession advantage or allow your other midfielder(s) attacking liberty.
I see the sense in considering buying a Fabinho.
Im down with getting him. He'd replace Carrick nicely. Adding to us the option of utilising a double pivot and the option of going out and searching for a controlling 8 to support Pogba
Busquets is a class DLP though and mostly played with offensive CM combo's like Xavi and Iniesta or Rakatic and Iniesta, and Schweini was a world class box to box in that system, Matic and Fabinho are neither, both are good holding players that protect the back 4 well, but neither have the dynamism or creativity to be a box to box, nor do they offer a goal threat, on top of that Pogba is not a #10, the 3rd CM we need is one that can provide a bridge between Matic and Pogba, not 2 DM's to sit square of each other that will see Pogba end up central in what would become a 4-2-3-1.
I could see Fabinho to compete with Matic, but not as a partner, not unless we want to become more negative than we already are in our play style, it would be akin to playing two Mascherano's.
Good argument except that Matic and Fabinho are actually different in many ways even though they occupy the same section of the midfield. Also, the need for tactical flexibility can make it a huge advantage to have both on the pitch at times. We should remember that one of Fabinho's outstanding traits is his turn of pace (and pace). He is also a good passer of the ball and likes to bomb forward. Something he picked up as an adventorous right back. Let's also not forget Matic's evolution as a midfielder. He does not only have the ability to break up play but with a solid partner, he can play a DLP role well.
I think that in certain types of games, a Matic-Fabinho combo can provide solidity, stability and complete attacking freedom for Pogba. A Fabinho can be a substitute for Matic, a partner to him in some games and an option for right back.
Matic can only sr
Matic can only dream of Fabinho's pace and turn of pace. That is perhaps their most significant difference. Matic is also a more versatile DM.
