A proper ball-playing centre-back who looks like he can actually defend.

Credit to him for having the confidence in himself to keep playing his way and overcoming his nightmare start to his career here.

Real happy for him. I do wonder if Mourinho will reward his performances by starting him against Arsenal and/or City? Would be a huge test for him.

Looks honestly dreadful 1 on 1 but Vidic often was too and there are ways to avoid that.

Trust Jose to find the right spot and system for him.

Still yet to see any magic on the ball, looks calm but not really picking brilliant passes or anything... need to watch one of those individual highlight videos, maybe therer is stuff I am missing

Or fans should cut knee jerk reactions and have some patience (myself included when it came to Lindelof).

Decent defender detector works well to this day for Jose.

In particular. I've been happy for him to grow into being our distributor from the back (perhaps in a match where we aren't running round like headless fecking chickens by the end) but it's been worrying seeing his woeful defensive lapses since he's arrived. He looked much better in that respect tonight and his and Young's performances were exceedingly pleasing tonight.

His first half was the best out of any defender for us for a long time, superb. Second half good too, but first was Vidic/Rio like to be honest.

    Victor Vidic!

I don't agree he looks dreadful 1 on 1. He actually looks good, very attentive, looking to block, looking to steal the ball. He has a bit to learn but I think he has a lot of the ingredients to be very good.

He's still making errors, but he's recovering from them much quicker now and rectifying his mistakes without them turning into calamities. Seems like there's a lot of room for growth with him, but things look positive if this is him just finding his feet, so to speak.

I wonder what happens when Jose has his full complement of CB's - he's playing on the right... but that's Bailly's position....

When the pressure was on he never lost his man. Shows good mentality which for me is the most important thing for any elite footballer.

Think long term if we plan on 3 at the back it'd be Bailly - Lindelof - Rojo

When he had the stupid hand ball in the first half I just thought “oh no it’s happening again” - but that was some performance.

Harsh to be in a backline conceding two goals because of a silly challenge by Rojo and shocking tracking from midfielders on the second.

You can’t be starting threads like this. Didn’t you hear, Lindelof is one of the worst defenders to have ever graced the Premier League.

Great to see him finding his feet.

That's actually a really balanced back 3. Add wingbacks to that and there's not much to argue against in it as a system.

Would be quite something if Lindelof went from a joke figure to the lynchpin of a back 3!

Yep. Still not convinced yet but he played very good today. Stones took time at City to get going and maybe Lindelof will too.

He looks much much different from what he looked like at the start of the season. His confidence looks back and he's at every challenge with each forward now.

Glad for him. Hope he keeps up with this.

Great in a back 3 but not sure if he is ready to play in a 2.

    I would play Lindelof-Bailley-Rojo as my CB's.

A bit sad really to have to have posts like this. Fans of a team really need to concentrate on being supporters.

That's important. He dealt with threats with much more authority than he has done for us before. Intercepting a ball into the box in the second half by stepping in front of the attacker at the near post springs to mind as a positional play he just didn't have earlier in his United career. If we'd had October Lindelof we'd have probably lost that game, the difference is as stark as that.

As for going forwards as has been said it's him in the middle of Bailly - Rojo, although I'd hope Jones would have something to say about that once he's fit. Getting to a point where we have four quality options would be great, with Smalling probably the one to move on.

    Quite right,me too !
I remember Pallister signing and looking like Bambi on ice in his first few months but what a player he turned out to be . Really hope this lad makes it he looks very good on the ball and could be ideal partner for the more gung Ho Baily and looks ideal for a back 3 so gives us good options

Always thought he'd need more time but he's impressed. I wasn't sure about him starting in a tough away fixture but he's really delivered the goods.

Him and Bailly in our defence, together with Smalling/Rojo is just epic.

Once again, Mourinho may get a lot of criticism on a lot of issues but he knows his defenders inside out.

Think Jose signed him for a 3 at the back formation. He looks like he could be a really good player.

Ups and downs still to come, of course. And I can guaran-fecking-tee there will be calls for his head the moment he dares have a bad performance again. Still, though, nice to see him show why we signed him. Onwards and upwards from here.

Peter Drury was spot on tonight. Lindelöf played an excellent game as he had very specific duties in a back three. He more or less man marked Richarlison all game. Gave him nothing all night.

Whether he will ever do as well in a back two over time without similar specific duties remains to be seen. But this game will do him a world of good confidence-wise.

    Bailey - Lindelof - r0j0

Lindelof pressed high up and was quick to intercept; he needs to play centrally and do that to support the Midfield when they get over run. He did it tonight against richaralson more than any of the other defenders did. Good day for him.

Growing in confidence and I expect to see him improve further over the next few weeks as there is plenty of game time coming with the winter schedule.

Could not bring myself to write him off without a fair crack even with how poor he looked.
Saw some very good defending again today. Enough to convince me there is a player in there. Hope he can keep this up.

Did the international break help him? Thought he was fantastic against Italy and gained so much confidence from those games and has taken it onwards.

Exactly what I thought and the suspensions of Bailly and Jones for the first 2 CL games screwed that up (meaning we saw different things tried to compensate).
Also think not getting Perisic affected that.

We have seen how effective Young is in that position. Perisic would have been an upgrade. Shame we couldn't get him.
