Is Shaw coming back into the fold mean we will not go for a LB this summer or are we just shopping Shaw by playing him now?

What’s wrong with having two left backs?

Just because Shaw is back in the team doesn’t mean we shouldn’t sign another fullback. Blind and Darmian aren’t great there. Young isn’t a long term solution.

Still seems weird paying north of 50 million for a LB but that's the unfortunate state of the market.

Perhaps Woodward is interested in bringing two Algerian to United for a commercial market in Algeria and sell their shirts

Didn't he get injured badly earlier in the season?

Nothing but 2 LB's with a history of long-term ACL injuries? That doesn't sound so reassuring, rather we buy a young prospect like Ryan Sessegnon to compete than add to a potentially already injury-prone backline.

I was more answering that question rather than if we should sign Ghoulam. I would prefer Sandro. But we need a left back.

Yep, yep, my bad. Tremendous player, as fast as Bale and as tricky as Nani, would be a real hit.

Why did he do this?! To whack the fee up for his next club?

Either that or just for security, who knows how he's going to turn out after an injury like that. Not the worst decision in the world to make sure he's got a future sorted with a 4-year contract whilst rehabilitating from an ACL injury.

There's no chance we are splashing out 50mil on someone who had an operation on his ACL on November.

Surely we would be better off going for Grimaldo?

    My thoughts exactly
Seems the papers are putting 2+2 together and getting 5
It could just be Napoli buying a new LB because theirs is fecked

Would be laughable if we do make the transfer after Mourinho called out Pep for spending striker money on Fullbacks. Particularly if we break the transfer record on a back that tore his ACL two months ago.

53 million is a bit steep for him, IMO.

I'm highly doubtful Ghlouam signed a contract with a €60m release clause, especially given that he ran down his contract to the last 8 months. It was even reported in the summer that Napoli were willing to put in a €25m release clause, so I'd bet his release clause is closer to €35/€40m.

Shaw has been here for years and he's yet to consolidate his first team place. Its only fair for United to start thinking about a more permanent solution to the problem. Ghoulam is good but he's no Maldini. If Shaw is half as good as people in here hype him up to be then he'll win the lb position place in no time.

In fairness a defender with a torn ACL is not exactly competition

I agree. Hence why I think that the fee (or the transfer rumour as a whole) is bogus. There again we can't keep on waiting for Shaw to prove himself. Sure, we should give him 1-2 more years to prove himself, however, this time round, it would be as a reserve not as a first teamer.

He will probably leave for someone in summer but not us in january anyway.

We seem to be linked with a number of Lazio players so this is perhaps confusion. Savic seems like the most likely one given that we can't get fellaini to sign a contract

Aggressive as well, which I think is important in that system. Sarri plays quite similar though, so makes sense how he'd fit there.

This has been rumoured for some time but I suspect Pep wants taller fullbacks in the Premiership and Grimaldo is a generous 1.71m. Still, I am happy if he ends up at Napoli under Sarri

Comparing Ghoulam and Alex Sandro since we were linked to both this year.

I tried to use Squawka but I cant see all the stats unless I scroll down so I can't just screen capture and put on here since it will be missing some areas of comparison on the image.

Excellent player. Very attractive option for prem club as he's on a comparatively low wage for his ability.

I'd imagine it would be for the summer. He's back in full training and Napoli will be looking for him to get back into the first 11 and help in the quest for the title.

More likely so De Laurentis can sell him for more £££.
