Inspired by so many liking the Russian one in the match thread. Little bit too imposing for my own taste.

    GSTQ is pretty boring.

My favourite from europe would be the Portugeese one, just ahead of La Marseillaise. Brilliant anthem to listen to and love how the Portugal players belt it out.

Beyond europe I've developed a liking for Argentino Himmo. Uruguay one is little similar as it also starts with a classical introduction but much shorter.

Intro with the piano is pretty cool:

The full version is here as seen with an old crooner signing it during Copa America 2011:

Fifa don't like long versions of anthems (why during last world cup the music stopped and the fans kept on signing) so for Argentina you'll probably just get the classical/disco style introduction and maybe the chorus.

Brazil is a classic IMO. Haven't got a Scooby what they are saying but sounds class.

Imposing or not, it's just the best to me.

And this version is just too sweet.

I'll not put my national anthem, so my favourites in the wc are: 1 - Russia. 2 - France.

In the world, appart from wc, my favourite anthems are:
    1 - Japan
    2 - Russia
    3 - Italy
    4 - Chile
    5 - Mexico

Japan one is so soft and quiet, complete contrast to the in yer face Russian and German ones.

Russian and the Marseillese are hard to top to be honest. It’s a shame the French don’t really sing it at football matches though. Gotta go to the rugby to see them belt it out.
All Latin Americans give it a massive go when they sing their anthems.

Italy's is incredible, the lyrics are "we are ready to die" or some shit, proper patriotic.

Of those at the world cup, I think Russia's is the most stirring. I wish we used Jerusalem as ours.

Land of Hope and Glory would be my choice although pretty difficult to sign when you look at the actual lyrics.

Agreed, Russia’s and Le Marseillaise are the best ones for this WC.

But overall, I still think the South African and Welsh anthems are the best.

Cannot stand the English national anthem and how the English players deem themselves too proud to belt it out. The US anthem has been parodied that many times, it's difficult to take that one seriously.

French national anthem is the best (of the countries there). Italy have a good one too.

England (and N.Ireland) is fecking awful. No wonder the players look flat half the time.

Croat here, but I think it sounds pretty awesome, especially since it is sung by the half of stadium all the time on big occasions.

German if Italy is not around. Classic as a combo too, Schumacher at Ferrari

Don't mind the English one either, although I am put off when the fans start singing it as a chant at random points during the game.

I always wonder about the English/British one.

I've only paid attention to 6 national anthems and ranking them:
    1. Russia
    2. Nigeria
3.Germany...except for the bit of the Deutsche Frauen, a bit archaic
    4. South Africa....in 3 languages
    5. England ....interestingly Her Majesty does not sing the Anthem..
    6. USA....Meh

But I've heard La Marseilles is emotive so off to Youtube.

Most anthems speak of going to war and killing people, so I like Brazil’s who basically talk about trees and birds and stuff. Although the melody starts like its a tom and jerry segment.

Also, Chile, Bolivia all sound the same

Maybe certain parts are deemed too offensive for International tournaments, similar to the German anthem which is a shortened version of the original that was banned in 1945.

England should sing Jerusalem instead of God Save The Queen. I love Jerusalem.

The Barmy Army sing Jerusalem at the start of the day's play in Tests. It's used by the England national rugby team as well.
